    We all won by hearin' this epic cuttin' contest. No fight just time that's right!
    If an eye for an eye makes the world blind, then a solo for a solo makes our ears sublime!

    I've probably watched this a hundred times over the years, still one of the cutting contest ever recorded.

    Sean Jones told someone he plays on a Bach 1/4 Mouthpiece which is huge, and requires great embouchure strength and training compared to what most legit players use. He could play a Pringle can and probably still sound amazing

    It appears Sean won that battle, although I've seen Marcus win those duels as well. The real winner, of course, was the audience.

    My unimportant but valid opinion is that they can go ahead and show off. Trumpeters have played on the tradition of duking it out ever since King Oliver in new Orleans... Plus I can't do that... and it sure looks like fun!

  • @timan06082
    @timan06082 16 лет назад +1

    Actually I know both of them, and the comment wasn't to bad mouth Marcus Printup because he is a fantastic trumpet player. As a musician that plays jazz, sometimes when you get on stage in a situation like this you get "owned" or "destroyed" by your friends that are on stage with you. All it does (at least for me) is motivate me to practice harder so that I can play better. So don't take the comment as a negative to anyone as that's not what it was meant to be.

    That guy is Sean Jones. First trumpet in Wynton Marsalis's big band and professor of jazz studies at Duquesne University. I don't know what you're hearing, but he's playing beautifully.

    if anyone could hit these notes, this wouldnt be so special. it isnt even about how high they are playing, its about the lines. even an octave down, 99 percent of trumpet players couldnt do that shit.

    I agree. I was just telling a buddy of mine while we were watching this clip that it starts out real nice, and jones plays some really great stuff harmonically, and then it progressively turns into a battle to see whose balls are bigger. Def gets old. I do like how jones keeps bring the sould back throughout though, he can really play-they both can, but sean is really killin.

      @timeisnow4116 3 года назад +2

      Clearly your not a jazz player. This is not a battle at all, they are only trading fours, back and forth and having fun. Has nothing to do with showing off, and by the way, they are both highly regarded and famous trumpet players who have more experience under there belt than anyone you’ve probably ever listened to, and are both members of the famous Lincoln Center Jazz orchestra, they are both high note specialists, outstandingly capable lead players, and beyond experts at jazz improvisation, your welcome. Player in the white shirt is Sean Jones, the other is Marcus Printup.

      @@timeisnow4116 Hello 14 years since my comment you are responding to - I was a bit younger then, and I'll give you that :) They are both excellent players and I would not say one is obviously better than the other. I actually was a jazz player and think they are both significantly better than I ever was at soloing. Nonetheless, this is a classic example of starting a solo with the denouement. You have to be Maynard or Arturo to pull that off, and this is a bit of a mess with their unfinished thoughts as the turn comes up more rapidly than they realize. Listen to Basie's "four for basie" on Swing Shift to hear a more thoughtful progression in solo excitement for the listener. It's obvious these two had a blast though!

  • @MFHorn683
    @MFHorn683 18 лет назад

    Not that I disagree with you, because I feel what you're saying. I'm a trumpet player and there is a certain ego that goes along with playing high notes. However, in this instance, they're both doing it because the other player is. They're just trading back and forth at a VERY high energy level. I don't believe they're trying to outdo eachother, I think they're trying to compliment eachother's playing.
