Here 15 years later! He’s evolved so much, I just met him today at a jazz festival and he showed us some incredible lessons, and his skills are unmatched!
Although I'm late to the party by a few years and I'm sure some of the commenters have learned their lesson based on Mr. Jones's recent success- I'd like to point out that I'm currently studying with his undergrad teachers. He really is the real deal- and he has been since college. Sean is the perfect combination of being made to play the trumpet and being a workhorse. My trumpet teacher actually told me today that he would make him do crazy the craziest technical studies he could find every week, then tell him to add the most ridiculous phrasing possible, and Sean would have it perfect in the next lesson. Another teacher told me that by his junior year, he was a top call for jazz gigs in both the Cleveland and Pittsburgh scenes. Anybody who has something negative about this man's playing has absolutely nothing to back up their claims. Go listen to Sean Jones live and try not to be moved by him.
I was in high school when Sean was starting at YSU and had the pleasure of seeing him perform with student ensembles. It was a site to behold because the venue was the student center on campus not even the music hall and it was filled to the brim because the community knew what was going on. The guest artist's who the late Tony Leonardi would bring were always in awe of Sean and these were veterans like Kenny Burrell. I got to study from the same professors as Sean at the same time he was there (I was a freshman when he as a senior) and I can attest to the musical feats he would perform.
I’m replying to this comment 7 years later… I’ve had the pleasure of seeing/hearing Sean Jones live a few times over the last 17 years… Everytime all I could do is shake my head in sheer bewilderment at his supreme command of the horn and inexhaustible ideas. In the best possible sense of the word he is a MONSTER.
Sean has one of the most distinct, original voices on his instrument ever! You can tell it's him within the first 2 notes. Nobody has his sound or his soul, NOBODY! Besides, if he's already got younger people trying to sound like him (me for example) he must have a pretty distinct style haha.
Just play like you , people who try to imitate other musicians are not respected by people like me and other real jazz musicians who worked hard to develope our own voice.
I attended a All State trumpet thing with Sean in high school. I sat way on the other side and of course he was on the end in first. His tone at the time was amazing. Technique was flawless.
Sean Jones has so much soul in his playing, and by the way guys don't argue the black or white thing, thats not what jazz is about. I think Sean Jones is one of the best jazz improvisers on the planet, not just on trumpet.
@LadyMiles08 Have you ever seen Sean live or actually played with him? It FEELS good. Sure, it's hard to say that he's completely grown beyond his influences, but that doesn't deny a musician his substance. If anything that's what substance is built upon. Sean understands one of the most important things as a musician: how to treat, build, and respond to a moment. We can expect enormous things from him in the future. He is a rare example of a jazz player who actually ADRESSES his audience.
Yeah really goes for it and plays incredible licks. This guy is the real deal. Outstanding talent and his temperament seems to be let's have fun and see what happens ... more posts of Sean!!!
this guys is really amazing. I just a bought a ticket to go see him this Friday at the small town college South western Oklahoma State ... live music is awesome
It is 2022 just ran across this saw Sean last week at Caton Castle the best ever he is chair of jazz studies at Peabody thanks for coming to Baltimore an assist tithe jazz scene
What you have to realize here is that every comment I posted here doesn't contain one iota of truth Sean Jones is one of the baddest trumpet players alive today
It just so happens that I enjoy this piece very much. An exercise in scales, are you kidding me? I know, everyone has their own opinions, but you can SEE the communication and hear the layering. It surprises me that a 25 year jazz veteran such yourself can ridicule this musical conversation as easily as you did. In case you didn't know this, this is a jazz combo playing a jazz combo piece. There is supposed to be a lot of freedom, and isn't as structured as a big band chart.
Real musicians listen to others and accept their interpretations, not talk about their technique behind their back on youtube comments. Nobody wants to play with people that judge everybody's playing off their own opinions of how it "should be". Those are the guys that sit at home shedding and never get anywhere. Just sayin'.
LadyMiles08 is stuuuuupid. There is no flash--Doc Severenson had flash. And all her wonder-folks, luminaries no doubt, are dead long before the jazz musician could barely survive on tips, which is still the case, by the way. Yes, there are folks around who are approaching luminary status, but they'd better hurry up and do it. I think Sean Jones is remarkable, and he's young and fluent and expressive. When Miles was young, they said he played "mouse trumpet." You forget, Ms Miles.
I know your post is 2 years old but you are dead on here.....Sean has a lot of talent but hasn't come into his own yet as a player...Freddy, Clifford, Lee eyc. those cats had their own voice...I don't hear a "voice" in Seans playing yet just a lot of licks...hopefully he will continue to grow and not get swallowed up in the biz ........
One of the best renditions of one of my favorite jazz classics!

I think Mr.Jones likes Clifford Brown very much.
who is bassist?
WHY, why is that the drummer is always hiding in the back, and always the hardest working person in the band. That drummer is good.
Ahahha, that s true. I was the drummer that night...

To reiterate, that bass player still pisses me off but that sax player is in fact, jive... good sound, bad ideas/concept... or maybe he is drunk

It is 2020 and Sean is the man welcome to Baltimore chair at Peabody see him all the time genius at work
I hear Sonny Stitt in Sean's playing, no disrespect to Sean.
Clifford Brown too
james sullivan That certainly wouldn't be a disrespectful observation, he and Sonny Stitt both sound amazing!

It started off very promising.. then both control and swing sort of got lost in technique and “free styling”.
p.s.
I hate Chris Botti
Man you haven’t seen his heavy shit

I don't know, I prefer Chris Botti
chris botti is worse than kenny g.
