    I was hoping that the amp + speaker IRs would give a decent sound for going direct to an interface or PA, for those times when I might want to skip the amp and go direct. But based on this demo I don't think it will work for me. Has anyone tried this by loading additional IRs into this pedal? Maybe there are IRs out there that will sound better in this application?

    Similar technology has been used in the possible waveform settings and eq's of computer audio cards for years now. No need to manually tweak the eq (though you can), you just pick your sonic environment. (I'm leaving out the quote marks.) Environments such as concert hall, living room, tiled bathroom, outdoors, cave, stadium, etc, etc. The specific settings change depending on the sound card manufacturer and where in the model stack (ie price) the card comes from.

    Thanks for this review! I'm starting to use the tc IR loader to simulate a sound box to make an electric harp sound less dry - so far the results are mixed, but I'm happy to have a pedal that can be fitted with my own IRs. Previously had a Hotone Omni AC, which is nice but does not allow user IRs.

    I use this thing with my POD HD500x. The Pod has speaker emulation, but its very difficult to tweak and make sound good. If i turn the cab sim off, slap a FX send block after the amp block, run the TC Impulse in the loop... not only does it sound amazing, but it's easy to achive good sounds compared to the PODs own cab sims which are difficult.

    Honestly I have loaded the York Audio Marshall IR at 96kH and it performs very well. Few pedals in front and you're set to go. The stock pedal platform IRs are ok but not awesome. Since the pedal can hold IRs up to 96kH 200ms, it stands to reason to load it up with great quality files and get the best out of it.

    Just pointing out the obvious here. Running a "distortion pedal" into the IR box that only models the power amp section and cab sim misses the entire pre-amp section of the amp where most of the tone comes from. Unless you are running a pre-amp modeler like a synergy rack pre. an Iridium-like pre-amp pedal or running a distortion pedal into something like a JHS color box in front of this pedal, you are completely missing how the IR pedal would sound best. Most people using this pedal would run it in the loop of their amp, behind the pre-amp and pedal board effects to DI their guitar out to a PA or into a DAW I/O. Every tone in this video sounded thin and flat to me without that proper pre-amp shaping.

    • @chordsoforion
      @chordsoforion  2 года назад +8

      Exactly. I was running it in the way that TC is marketing it - as a pedal platform. They even show it with a MojoMojo going straight into the Impulse.

    • @nudsh
      @nudsh 2 года назад +2

      @@chordsoforion I saw their video on it and thought the same thing. Running the Mojo direct into the IR box has a boxy and flat sound that is missing the rounded depth of a pre-amp stage. Not saying it isn't a usable tone for someone, just not what I would see as a typical use. Personally, I would run this off of a splitter box on the tail end of my pedal board to pipe out a basic cab signal to FoH or a PA system from my amp rig. You could then bring down the output master and still use the pre on the amp. By the time you run anything into your DAW, there are gobs of better options for pre, post and IR modeling. If you have a Colorbox or similar pre pedal to run that Mojo into, they tone would take on a whole new life. Cheers!!

    • @vibratemutate
      @vibratemutate 2 года назад +1

      i would just slap something with a real tube in it in front like a kingsley maiden/page, crazy circuits space charged or something like that.
      with a tube preamp pedal in front of an ir loader pedal we should get really close to real amp sounds i think.

    • @mickenilsson
      @mickenilsson 2 года назад +7

      Well... An overdrive is basically a preamp. With that said, the best way to use this pedal is to set a clean sound with the eq in it to adjust the tonality just as you dial in a clean Amp used as a "pedal plattform".

    • @nudsh
      @nudsh 2 года назад +1

      @@mickenilsson I would say that there are some distortion pedals that can also emulate the basic shaping of a pre-amp, but most overdrives I've used are just that, a grit circuit to 'heat up' the input signal. That is essentially the function of an overdrive, to overdrive the pre-amp input with some gain and drive. On their own, they generally lack the warmth and depth of what a full pre-amp circuit would provide.
      This morning I tried a little experiment. I have a Keeley Aria Comp/OD pedal that I normally run into a Synergy IICP module on a very clean setting. It sounds amazing, the OD in the pedal is the Red Dirt circuit. This then goes pre-amp out into a Focusrite and into Cubase where I amp/IR through either Helix Native or Two Notes WoS. I then took the Aria straight into my Focusrite, bypassing the Synergy pre and running through the same amp/IR stack. Completely different story, no matter what settings I used on the OD or comp it wasn't even close on tone. I tried the same thing with a Laney Steel Park OD and got the same result. For me, personally, the OD just doesn't have the depth of tone on its own.

    Another thing you can do with IR pedals (well, my GT-1000 does it and some plugins do) is load 'acoustic' IRs that make your electric instrument sound like an acoustic one. This is particularly good for electric violins but also works for guitars. I wonder if the TC will do that? My problem with the GT-1000 is that it always puts it at the end of the FX chain, whereas an acoustic IR would be better at the start of the chain. Just a thought :)

    • @Elephantelopelicanary
      @Elephantelopelicanary 2 года назад +2

      Hi Chrissie. Yep, this works pretty well with Sigma 3 Audio IRs loaded on it. I use it for my double bass, running it in the effects loop of my Fishman preamp. Really helps warm up the tone and get it my piezo pickup sounding far more like a mic, but without the feedback issues. Well, some feedback issues, but it does okay. Guess you know the feeling if you play violin. That being said, I'd have replaced my Fishman preamp with a Tonedexter, if I could have afforded it. It does the same thing, but far better, and tailored to your own instrument.
