I mean, yea, those small details for the nerds, - but for me, for the most part, to have a figure of original cast, just standing in the shelf, and cut the price in half ( if in some cases even more ) - just takes my money and Iam so happy with it.
Prowl was the first Transformer I ever had. Him and Sideswipe. Got them both for Christmas when I was 6. I'm just now finding out about the Masterpiece series. Now I must have them!
Funny thing is the old 280z car had orange peeling straight off the factory back then, restoration even orange peel the paint on purpose for authenticity
Great comparison. I'm going with the KOs from now on. On my Hasbro Prowl, I had to shave down the rear roof tabs that fit right under the siren. Also, one of the tabs on the siren side of the roof was broken. Luckily it still locks nicely. I paid $70+ and it did not come with the shoulder missiles.
Thank you for this comparison. I bought what I thought was a Takara Prowl only to discover it was in fact a KO. I'm not saying the KOs are bad, just pissed that I paid for the Takara one and got a KO instead.
Very nice, some times you can find a mess up paint job around the window or windshields, I have a K.O. version of Bumblebee and Sunstreaker have a mess up paint job.
Thanks for your review on this! When I missed my shot at getting the US release at 70 bucks, I decided to try a KO and see how it is, have Prowl and Red Alert on order now. Watching your review and many others, the KO figures seem about 95% on-par with the original. Problems and issues vary figure to figure, every toy's gunna be like that. I saw your video on Red Alert, and noticed the KO's red paint on the chest wasn't aligned as nicely as the Takara's. I also saw a picture of an official Takara with the same issue as your KO. I've also seen some KO Prowls that have paint nicer than the one you got, especially on the black striping in alt mode. These really are hit and miss, but overall are hits. For me, a collector on a tight budget who can't afford 70+ dollars on an MP slightly bigger than a deluxe, it's good to have a nicely done alternative that's not expensive. That being said, KOs suck. They take money away from the company, and it's not right. A part of me feels bad for purchasing a KO over an official one, but I myself justify it due to, like I said, being on a budget. Anyways, great video, and thank you for taking the time and money to bring these to us!
Just re-posting this comment here like you suggested : Nice comparison review one again. :) I wanted to point out another paint difference to tell them apart. The Original has the paint of the doors going all the way around the back edge of the door. The KO doesn't wrap around and is only on the front/side panel of the door. Not sure if you want to make an update but that is another sure way to point out the difference of the KO vs Original. Really like seeing your comparison reviews. :)
can anyone advise where to get genuine takara masterpiece? im in the uk, so it appears to only be ebay, but most seem to be ko. dont wanrt to spend 400 quid on something that turns out to be ko.
Just got a KO...I think there’s a fresh batch. Now it says 2313 and the Tomy is clear. Paid USD30. The usual loose joints are there but my original has about the same. Some minor paint defects as well but can be fixed. Only major problem came without one of the heel spurs, but he still can stand and pose. And I’m keeping him in vehicle mode.
Finally managed to score a KO Prowl after all this time (consolation prize for being unable to score the MP18+ Bluestreak). Another joint that's crazy tight is in that panel you have to move forward to get Prowl's head out. I think that this is due to really poor tolerances...seems like the bottom edge of it doesn't have enough space for the pinned joint to move properly. Those shoulder cannons don't seem to tab into anything, so I don't think I'll be using those much. I did have minor paint chipping on the hood straight outta the box, though, but that doesn't bother me. EDIT 2022Mar04: Well, then. My Prowl KO had a crazy fail. The car door that's behind his right arm in robot mode wasn't assembled correctly, and the hinge joint eventually snapped off.

My KO Prowl had the same loose shoulder gun thing on his right side, but the silver on both of the exclusive Rocket Covers was perfect with no flaking or defects at all. I am lucky enough to be able to buy originals. Believe me, I have laid money down in the past for robots, but there is something mysterious and underground about the KO. Great review, this put me on to KO's. Wish I had watched this before I ordered Prowl and Lambor, but they are still cool. Your right on it with the differences, I can spot KOs a mile away!
i feel like sellers should just say KO in the title there's a genuine market for KO transformers people prefer the KO seekers to the official ones personally my KO barricade is amazing only issue is the window frames on his shoulders are a bit lose but like people actively search for KO's sometimes hell KO's are good ways of getting really expensive figures(mp44 and mpm10) at actually good prices that don't make you feel like your getting ripped off
Thank you for the comparisons. It does beg the question, do you really get what you pay for? I mean, should even the masterpiece versions cost as much as they do? And really, why not get a KO if they are still better than mainline toys. For example, the Siege and Earthrise toys are only in online stores so why not just get a KO? I just really want to get a decent Prowl because he was my very first Transformers back in ‘83 or ‘84. I’ve had others loke Armada and Energon but I need to complete the circle. Maybe a KO will fill the gap for now. Decisions, decisions..
I got Prowl today and he is perfect. I was in shock. He is amazing. I bought the three pack from TF Direct. I got MP-17, MP-19, MP-21. MP-19 had perfect paint but two right arms. Mp-21 was really good too. Bumblebee had a little finger print on the hood. Smokescreen was a big let down.
I got mine in the mail today. The biggest problem I noticed is that the shoulder launchers are super loose so that the missile launches rest flat on his shoulders instead of pointing diagnally up.
lwc888 you can squeeze a bit of super glue into the swivel and keep flopping it back and forth til it dries, this should stiffen it right up, just dont stop til it dries or it will seize
Does anyone know any other way to identify a KO from a real MP? I mean I look for faded, low quality Japanese characters, sloppily-placed tape on the sides and always check for the punched-in serial numbers under the "Made in..." section on the bottom.
Ko looks better I have a mix of official and kos like my thf soundwave totally amazing figure nice wratchets no lose joints also got it at a very cheap price.
I was referred to come here by a Facebooker. I am new to the MP scene and I have only gotten three MP's. . Two Takara Tomy and one Toyworld. I want to say thank you for this video and I will be looking at another one because I was worried I got a KO. I am not a fan of them and I believe in getting the authentic items. i actually prefer the duller orange on the blinker lights than the bright orange on the takara. the bright orange seems like a toy color while the dull orange looks more real

now im confused. my prowl seems to be a mixture of both somehow. the plastic insert has a mould for the shoulder cannons, which were included, but the poster thingy is exactly the same as yours. the reds are very bright, like your takara, and the tail lights are good, but the orange headlights are dull. giveaway is the white on the croth doesnt go all the way, the wheels have the centre piece, and the foot just says made in china. nothing about tomy. i also only paid 20 quid on ebay, so guessing thats a giveaway. the sellar assured me it was takara. not much difference in appearance though. no one who sees my collection will know the difference. just discovered the bumblebee ive bought is also a KO.
Rocket Punch, sorry but I can't afford the Takara versions. Just got my first KO MP today and if it wasn't for the cheaper price I would not have any at all. Now they're a little more affordable. I say better that than nothing. The figure has rocketed to one of the best of all the transfomers (deluxe, voyager, leader class, legends, etc) that I have.
TheActs2021 I have trusted sellers I've been dealing with for several years and collect the kos myself and haven't had any problems.theyve all been pretty amazing for the most part and some(quite a few actually)drastically outshine official products from hasbro/takara. There is a lot of garbage floating around though so not everyone is going to be as lucky.
Have you found that there is one K.O. that is for the most part always good? In other words have you found that there is a K.O. mold that is consistently better than the other K.O.s?
only way to answer that would be to come across a few but I cant really say if there is one that is better than the other. There is no one thing that is always consistent I guess is what im trying to say.
I'm not a big buyer of MPs due to the cost; I may stick with Takara and get some KOs as well. However there are ways to pay less, with a bit of patience; I've bought most of my MPs discounted at TRU or on eBay. The softer faces of KO Fairlady bots kind of put me off. Yes Takara figures have their own defaults too, however you have to give credit where it's due, it's Takara who invented them, and without them, there wouldn't be KOs either. So I'd say if you want to keep the MP thing going and can afford a Hasbro/Takara, then go ahead.

miragexl007 I dont think its reverse engineered. I think they copy schematics of the mold, probably given by the factory who is making the legitimate ones. There are still crappy KO's for kids but these are menat for collectors so are built as such

The KO's really aren't inferior to the originals, they both have different flaws to each other, but that's about it. exactly, they arent inferior to them, but I always say they should never be a replacement. People will argue that buying real ones along with KO does not justify things because KO makers pockets are still being filled and I agree. I dont buy real to justify the KO purchase, I buy real to support the company that invented it. However, i always like to have a duplicate to mess with. However I would never buy a duplicate real one. Too expensive, but one real and one KO, yes, so technically they arent losing money from me because I wouldnt buy another real one.
Great review, I wonder how long it will before we see their Bluestreak and Smokescreen? If they did all the sideswipe molds version plus the gold one, then I bet they will do the same with the Nissans, I doubt very much they will change the molds even if theyre making new ones. A possible theory that I came across from some research is that the KO people borrow the 3D CAD designs and slightly modify them. That is why they are very very close. It would literally be a matter of clicking and dragging slightly then having a machine cut the molds
What up main I got Lambor KO has a couple of issues but is a ko but still is awesome I fix all the issues on him but he looks awesome man will try to do a video of it but my next Ko will be this Prowl he looks so bad ass I wish I had the money for the Original ones but I would have to sale more stuff I’m selling some of the figures that I have that I just don’t want so hope I can get more MP’s want to get Wheel jack original and bumblebee so hope is good sale for me this year to get more MP’s Ko’s or original. The Lambor that I got had a problem on the waist peg it was to big to peg in I just cut it out and it went in and peg in very good had a chip of extra plastic on one eye I also remove it the paint is cool no complaints on that the shoulder cannot it’s stays lose will fix that as well and the hand gun is lose on the hand peg another thing that it has is the knee join is a little bit lose but it has a screw so I will unscrew it and put a little bit of crazy glue so it can be more solid even with all of those flaws he still is pretty awesome looking at him at the side of generation swipe well is just awesome. - Great video man and again thanks for doing this type of videos

I wound up buying 4 robots at a con. And the guy reassured me that all were real. Only the Thundercracker was real. My prowl, wheeljack, and smokescreen... not so much. A few of my online friends said I should be cool since the ko's aren't that bad.
I have got a "KO" of Prowl just today, but the box is completely different from Your one: no "transformers masterpiece" logos at all, no barcode, no hologram. The code is "C P-17" and not "MP-17", the brand is "Takasa Tony" and not "Takara Tomy" like as the one You've reviewed. Are You sure You have reviewed a "real KO" and not two "genuine Takara"? takara is better, but not by much, price of the ko is worth it and the head mold is great. i decided to buy the ko version with cannons for less than 40 dollars with shipping a must have........
***** Nothing beats the original. Trouble is, all sold out (the 2nd re-issue) this coming May 2016. If you are after them for the sake of having one, get the KO. If you really want the original...............
anomaluigi Its not legal at all. Only explanation I have because of what is known about the KO industry is that in order to get them this exact, they have access in the factory of the original design files and create their own molds with very minimal adjustments. You can literally exchange MOST parts, not all. I discovered this when dismantling my MP-10 KO. Not all parts interchange. But enough to prove that they are based off original designs, not factory rejects like some people say. There's no need to stop collecting these, just stay away from knockoffs and only buy original. These videos help you distinguish which is which.
Hey man great videos and a service to the fans What do you think of the chance of toxicity from KO's? I always wonder since I've heard of a lack of safety standards in Chinese factories.
To some they are taboo, to me they are a novelty, a display of current technology and a testament to succesful reverse engineering and duplication in manufacturing circles while providing the consumer a more affordable means of acquiring a product...or something.
I just bought a knockoff as legitimate, payed 130$ for it, says made in China and you can smell the difference. I’m asking for a refund because I found knockoffs for way way cheaper
Your mileage may vary! In the very first transform, my KO Prowl broke at four different places at both shoulders so that both arms fell off. The legs are really loose and floppy, and there's paint slop all over. Worst Transformer I've ever gotten. :(

Is there a problem with the head tilting up? Because on mine it doesn't tilt up that well

I thought the KO's were not allowed to use autobot or decepticon symbols......
Does anyone know any other way to identify a KO from a real MP? I mean I look for faded, low quality Japanese characters, sloppily-placed tape on the sides and always check for the punched-in serial numbers under the "Made in..." section on the bottom.

Ko looks better I have a mix of official and kos like my thf soundwave totally amazing figure nice wratchets no lose joints also got it at a very cheap price.
I was referred to come here by a Facebooker. I am new to the MP scene and I have only gotten three MP's. . Two Takara Tomy and one Toyworld. I want to say thank you for this video and I will be looking at another one because I was worried I got a KO. I am not a fan of them and I believe in getting the authentic items. Just a heads up. Before ordering this from Ebay make sure you ask if it will come with the CANNON LAUNCHER. Because my prowl didn't come with it.

i actually prefer the duller orange on the blinker lights than the bright orange on the takara. the bright orange seems like a toy color while the dull orange looks more real
A glue or a nail polish as I apply to most of My figures. I have the original but I'm also planning to get the K.O. coz of the glossy chest and give away My original as a gift to a child.

+metubeaccountko My KO Bluestreak did not come with any additional attachments. I ordered mine from Amazon (which came from China). Might just depend where you buy it from.

Dude, that shite is made in the same factory. The KO is just a slightly less refined version where they don’t sand the mold as much.
now im confused. my prowl seems to be a mixture of both somehow. the plastic insert has a mould for the shoulder cannons, which were included, but the poster thingy is exactly the same as yours.
the reds are very bright, like your takara, and the tail lights are good, but the orange headlights are dull. giveaway is the white on the croth doesnt go all the way, the wheels have the centre piece, and the foot just says made in china. nothing about tomy. i also only paid 20 quid on ebay, so guessing thats a giveaway. the sellar assured me it was takara.
not much difference in appearance though. no one who sees my collection will know the difference.
just discovered the bumblebee ive bought is also a KO.
Rocket Punch, sorry but I can't afford the Takara versions. Just got my first KO MP today and if it wasn't for the cheaper price I would not have any at all. Now they're a little more affordable. I say better that than nothing. The figure has rocketed to one of the best of all the transfomers (deluxe, voyager, leader class, legends, etc) that I have.

TheActs2021 I have trusted sellers I've been dealing with for several years and collect the kos myself and haven't had any problems.theyve all been pretty amazing for the most part and some(quite a few actually)drastically outshine official products from hasbro/takara. There is a lot of garbage floating around though so not everyone is going to be as lucky.

Have you found that there is one K.O. that is for the most part always good? In other words have you found that there is a K.O. mold that is consistently better than the other K.O.s?
only way to answer that would be to come across a few but I cant really say if there is one that is better than the other. There is no one thing that is always consistent I guess is what im trying to say.
I'm not a big buyer of MPs due to the cost; I may stick with Takara and get some KOs as well. However there are ways to pay less, with a bit of patience; I've bought most of my MPs discounted at TRU or on eBay.
The softer faces of KO Fairlady bots kind of put me off. Yes Takara figures have their own defaults too, however you have to give credit where it's due, it's Takara who invented them, and without them, there wouldn't be KOs either. So I'd say if you want to keep the MP thing going and can afford a Hasbro/Takara, then go ahead.

I've always wanted the real stuff....because all the KOs back in the day were kind of crap..now I wonder...if the quality is about the same if not the same or better, why pay the prices? I'd like to think the "real" thing is better quality-stiffer. Still sucks I think. So the KO just reverse makes theirs?
miragexl007 I dont think its reverse engineered. I think they copy schematics of the mold, probably given by the factory who is making the legitimate ones. There are still crappy KO's for kids but these are menat for collectors so are built as such

The KO's really aren't inferior to the originals, they both have different flaws to each other, but that's about it. And they cost half as much! man, it's a great way to own duplicates of the same figure.
exactly, they arent inferior to them, but I always say they should never be a replacement. People will argue that buying real ones along with KO does not justify things because KO makers pockets are still being filled and I agree. I dont buy real to justify the KO purchase, I buy real to support the company that invented it. However, i always like to have a duplicate to mess with. However I would never buy a duplicate real one. Too expensive, but one real and one KO, yes, so technically they arent losing money from me because I wouldnt buy another real one.

Great review, I wonder how long it will before we see their Bluestreak and Smokescreen? If they did all the sideswipe molds version plus the gold one, then I bet they will do the same with the Nissans, I doubt very much they will change the molds even if theyre making new ones. A possible theory that I came across from some research is that the KO people borrow the 3D CAD designs and slightly modify them. That is why they are very very close. It would literally be a matter of clicking and dragging slightly then having a machine cut the molds
Well the MP-12G is out there now, so It should be safe to assume the rest of the Nissans are also going to be made. Hope they do some color variants
What up main I got Lambor KO has a couple of issues but is a ko but still is awesome I fix all the issues on him but he looks awesome man will try to do a video of it but my next Ko will be this Prowl he looks so bad ass I wish I had the money for the Original ones but I would have to sale more stuff I’m selling some of the figures that I have that I just don’t want so hope I can get more MP’s want to get Wheel jack original and bumblebee so hope is good sale for me this year to get more MP’s Ko’s or original.
The Lambor that I got had a problem on the waist peg it was to big to peg in I just cut it out and it went in and peg in very good had a chip of extra plastic on one eye I also remove it the paint is cool no complaints on that the shoulder cannot it’s stays lose will fix that as well and the hand gun is lose on the hand peg another thing that it has is the knee join is a little bit lose but it has a screw so I will unscrew it and put a little bit of crazy glue so it can be more solid even with all of those flaws he still is pretty awesome looking at him at the side of generation swipe well is just awesome.

these Taraka originals cars go for around $150-$200NZD on ebay. then depending on shipping thats another $60-$114NZD. ouch my wallet
I wound up buying 4 robots at a con. And the guy reassured me that all were real. Only the Thundercracker was real. My prowl, wheeljack, and smokescreen... not so much. A few of my online friends said I should be cool since the ko's aren't that bad.

I have got a "KO" of Prowl just today, but the box is completely different from Your one: no "transformers masterpiece" logos at all, no barcode, no hologram. The code is "C P-17" and not "MP-17", the brand is "Takasa Tony" and not "Takara Tomy" like as the one You've reviewed.
Are You sure You have reviewed a "real KO" and not two "genuine Takara"?

takara is better, but not by much, price of the ko is worth it and the head mold is great. i decided to buy the ko version with cannons for less than 40 dollars with shipping a must have........

How is it legal for these companies to make practically exact replicas of a licensed product? This really makes me not want to collect these anymore
anomaluigi Its not legal at all. Only explanation I have because of what is known about the KO industry is that in order to get them this exact, they have access in the factory of the original design files and create their own molds with very minimal adjustments. You can literally exchange MOST parts, not all. I discovered this when dismantling my MP-10 KO. Not all parts interchange. But enough to prove that they are based off original designs, not factory rejects like some people say. There's no need to stop collecting these, just stay away from knockoffs and only buy original. These videos help you distinguish which is which.
I got K.o mp 17 prowl and it was terrible every joint was lose and its face was not painted. It was just a blue blob of paint

I know KOs are a Taboo subject but so far the KOs Ive seen sometimes look identical or better then the overpriced Takara versions.
To some they are taboo, to me they are a novelty, a display of current technology and a testament to succesful reverse engineering and duplication in manufacturing circles while providing the consumer a more affordable means of acquiring a product...or something.

I just bought a knockoff as legitimate, payed 130$ for it, says made in China and you can smell the difference. I’m asking for a refund because I found knockoffs for way way cheaper

Your mileage may vary! In the very first transform, my KO Prowl broke at four different places at both shoulders so that both arms fell off. The legs are really loose and floppy, and there's paint slop all over. Worst Transformer I've ever gotten. :(
