I am so glad I found your channel! My mother tried many times to get me to sew and I wouldn’t take the time. One of my biggest regrets. But now it’s time to make her proud. Thank you for sharing! I will be a regular.

Great tip on using the tape. It makes following the seam allowance measurement much easier for us newbies.

Love your bite size basic tutorials Jan! I am impatient & want to start projects without proper prep. Inevitably I struggle & make things more difficult.(I'm working on this bad habit!) I'm definitely a visual learner, thank you for the great videos!

Thanks so much for this helpful tutorial. For Christmas I plan to gift pillows. Plan to make pillow cover for pillow form & include a ruffle around the edge. Choosing fabric to reflect the recipient’s interest or hobby. Please a tutorial on how to make this pillow cover with ruffle if you will. Thank you!!

Great idea! I'll work on it. Are you interested in a zipper closure or just a flap closure?

5/8 - inch is the standard stitch for apparel. It is the allowance used on commercial patterns.

Do u need a skinnier presser foot to do a smaller seam allowance? Beginner and gifted a serger. They told me it was special. It came with a rolled hem foot. Yes im sure. Also came with the instruction manuals. Heard that was rare. I also bought a singer heavy duty for my daughter for cosplay so have that too. I did try the rolked hem serger foot. Looks like what i see in underware.

If you want a smaller seam allowance, you can use a 1/4 " pressor foot. But if you don't have one, just line up your fabric with the 1/4 inch line on your machine.

@@JanHowell okay thanks. Also learned I can move the needle position. I'm learning! Yeah, the rolled hem Serger foot is special. I see that seam in underware. I don't think it really even rolls it so much as just cut the fabric and encase it as small as possible.

So, when I get to the of a seam do I have to tie some kind of knot or the machine does that itself? I am VERY new to sewing. I just bought a Brother machine.

Your machine should have a backstitch button. Use that at the beginning and end of the seams
