New channel for me. I am enjoying your tutorials. One thing I remember learning is that using different brand rulers on the same project can also make a difference.
Very good information!! I have struggled with a correct 1/4" seam allowance for years!!! Who would have thought that even which way you press changes things?? Thank you so much for the valuable lesson!!!
I am a relatively new quilter. The 1/4" seam allowance on my machine clearly was not as my 6" 9 patch blocks were barely 5". Since watching this video a couple of weeks ago, I spent 2 full days calibrating my seam allowances and guess what? Over the last week I have put together 28 perfect 6" 9 patch blocks. They are bang on once sewn into the quilt. So thank you so much for your assistance. It was so very much appreciated and helpful. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
How enlightened! Thank you! I had learned scant quarter seam… I would still have problem during my project. I so appreciate your suggestion in testing seam especially during the project.
So happy to find you. Appreciate your straight forward approach and sharing your knowledge and so much information. Your voice is pleasant and offers easy listening. You're a lovely young lady and a gift to each of your followers. Be blessed, as you've blessed me, take care of you and be happy. Thank you agian, look forward to more tutorials.
Thanks for demonstrating this approach (one I have not seen before). The tests I have done involved cutting 3 strips at a precise width, sewing them together and testing the overall width for a particular result, thereby dealing with 2 seams and their inherent seam allowances, meaning more variables to figure out the proper correction. Your way is quicker since there is less measuring and cutting of strips. I'm saving this for future reference. I also like your stressing how differences in fabrics, threads, pressing, etc. can all create different measurements. Test, test, test ... for every project ... every machine.
I just found your channel and this by far is the best vid I have seen for 1/4" seam allowances. I have tried all kinds of suggestions from a thin stack of post it notes to a small magnetic ruler.... I'm better, but still inconsistent. Practicing before every project makes so much sense. Thanks so much - I'm so happy I have found your channel!
Thanks!! I do a lot of tiny piecing, so I’m really careful with my seam allowances. I had someone ask me a while back and realized it was never taught in a way that made sense to me, so I made up this way! I’m glad you found it valuable!
Honestly, the very best video I've ever seen on this subject. I will do this with every project now. But, honestly, what an opportunity to use theme fabric for your test pieces! You could have a baby quilt or table runner or Christmas pillows in no time.
this was wonderful - you explain things so well and give the reasons behind what you do which is excellent. Now I will have to give it a try as I've been frustrated with my blocks not coming out "perfect" and have been concerned about getting that perfect 1/4" seam allowance - a great method for testing - thanks so much!
Thank you! I have a Juki the same as your’s… and I’ve been really struggling to get my 1/4” seam perfect. I learnt a lot from your quick video… the pressing direction of the seam, I’m not being pedantic (this seam allowance really matters) and I need the seam guide you have!
Thank you for this super detailed tutorial! I’ve been quilting for years, sometimes getting frustrated with my seam width, and learned a couple of new tricks and explanations from this!
Brilliant! That is so simple yet so amazing!! It's totally a " Why didn't I think of that" thank you for sharing for newbies like me that is going to save me so much more frustration God bless you.
I really wish I had watched this video before I sewed my first quilt (which I’m still quilting) cuz I was SO frustrated at how off my work was! I literally had to CUT DOWN EACH BLOCK in order for it to match and line up! 😩. I knew there would be SOME issues since it is my first quilt, but it’s really demoralizing when this happened. It makes you doubt yourself and your ability TO SEW 1/4” which should be fairly easy.....so I thought. But thank you for this. I’m sure this will solve that problem in the future! 👍🌸😊
No wonder I had this frustrating problem. I was always so careful cutting and sewing and it was just not working out correctly. I figured it was because I was a newbie to quilting and hoped it would get better with each quilt, but it didn't! Thank you a million times for this video!
Im so glad this helped!! I remember going through that same process! It was so frustrating because I was working with all these tiny pieces and my blocks were so off! I hope this helps you get the results you are happy with :)
OMG I LOVE this video!! and thank goodness we have the same machine :-) I immediately read through all the comments looking for that seam guide and hit the link and ordered it - thank you for taking the time to share that in your response. i am addicted to your channel - and you are a handful of mentors I have adopted for quilting and also how to produce perfectly styled content that hits the mark! Thank you thank you thank you!
This is a helpful video. I would never say that Art Gallery fabric is flimsy. It isn’t, but the weave is finer which is why it feels so beautifully smooth. Thanks for the tips.
That's probably a much fairer way of saying it. I've never had a problem with the quality of art gallery fabric, so flimsy was poor word choice. Finer is definitely better :)
Thanks for this great video! I have a Juki just like yours, with the same seam guide, and I also have a Juki DX7 computerized machine, and the quarter-inch settings are (it seems like) miles apart. Very frustrating! I fiddle around with these settings all the time and I'm never satisfied. Your method is the best one I've seen.
Well who knew???? Amazing. I don't know if I'll do this all the time, but I'm sure going to give it a try. I am so surprised. Maybe I'm stupid, but I just assumed my little quarter inch foot helped me make a quarter inch seam. I now realize that is not true. Thank you so much for this video! Eye-opening!
Very informative. I have been trying to perfect my 1/4-inch seams, and the pressing of the seam can also make a difference! Thank you. Oh yes, I have tried moving the needle too, and that helps as well.
This made perfect sense to me! Thank you so much for being so clear and direct. I am curious as to that seam guide was that you adjusted. I need something such as this. 💕
Its an adjustable seam guide that attaches with screws to my juki. There are other non-juki seam guides available--even some magnetic ones if you don't have screw holes in the throat of your machine. :). Heres a link to the adjustable one I use: amzn.to/2EkYmae
Where do I get the seam guide you are using? In high school that is similar to what we used. I usually use a magnetic guide and it is not actuate where I was placing it on my machine. I switched to the foot that has the bar on it. I am working on a jewel block and I have not checked the seams but I know it is smaller than the block I am making for the cozy quilt sewquester mystery quilt. I have a janome machine. Thanks I have learned a lot from you.
www.kenssewingcenter.com/juki-adjustable-seam-guide.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5su8svz36AIVgeDICh1A-AS_EAQYASABEgLT5vD_BwE This is the seam guide I use on my juki. I don’t know if it would fit other brands but it might if your needle plate has the two screw holes. I like this one because it swings out of the way. There are some simpler/cheaper screw on guides that serve the same purpose but don’t swing away. When I sew on my janome, I use one of the feet with a guide on it and just move my needle. :). I’m so glad you are enjoying the videos! ❤️
I unfortunately found out how important this is and I will, going forward, ALWAYS check with each project. I just made a quilt and ... changed machines part way through. I did not take any seams out. My excuse is the quilt is for a teenager who won’t realize some points were cut off. Never again!! Thank you!
I had MANY quilts like that when I first started because I would move machines! Its amazing how different a "1/4"" is on different machines. You'd think they could be more consistent!
This really is a pain in the neck when you think your sewing with the correct seam allowance but it doesn’t come out correctly. Thanks for the great info.
For a long time I gave up trying to piece more complicated patterns. Why? Because the seams don't nest even though I've measured the distance from seam to edge of fabric (internal whopping if it's a perfect 1/4 seam!). Washi tape, masking tape... I even bought seam sew easy guide but sigh... The perfect 1/4 inch seam is still elusive for me. Then who knows it could be affected by how I press my seams. 🙇♀️🙇♀️🙇♀️. Thank you so much for understanding this problem and creating a sensible and very assuring video that tho elusive, the consistent quarter inch seam is not impossible. (ps: for computerised machine, instructions on how to get the 1/4 inch seam is included. Hahaha) Have a great 2021!
Great instruction in that video. I always have trouble when sewing 1/4" on either side of a drawn line (to make HSTs). I've tried using a ruler to mark those lines, or the 1/2" ruler (magic wand?) but my seams are either too wide or too narrow. Do you have any suggestions or could you do a video on that subject? Thanks
When I'm making HSTs, I usually don't worry about it too much. As long as my seam allowance is large enough to be stable, I just trim the block down to the correct size.
Very helpful video! Just a small quibble - the presser foot that you showed, with the built-in seam guide, is a single hole foot. If you move the needle left or right, the needle will hit the presser foot and break. (Been there, done that!) I do not know how to adjust the seam allowance for that particular foot. Remove the guide, maybe? I don't know. For myself, I ended up using a zig-zag foot, with no built-in-guide, for my movable-needle machine. Any other ideas?
I did not realize that how you pressed the seamed mattered. I did know that a thread or two DOES matter. But will I try to quilt again? if I get my surfaces clear so I can use my time and my tools per your other video...that will be fun! and I need some fun! thank you sooo much!
I'm glad you liked it!! Pressing direction seems to matter in my piecing but maybe its different for others :). I hope you find some quilting time for yourself!
I hate to say this, but practice. Some machines have feet with marks on them that measure 1/4 from the needle. Or you could mark your own with some nail polish or a marker.
At minute 8:41 where you hold up a 1/4" piecing foot and show how you need to move your needle to solve a SA problem, I think you would break your needle in this case. That foot has a very small needle opening. Also, a hint- when you are needing to adjust your SA guide an 1/8th" you could place your ruler level with the guide, tape it down with washi tape in the correct position you want to achieve and then loosen and move your guide. Love your channel!
Thank you so much for all the information that you shared here on RUclips. I wanted to buy you a cuppa coffee and I see it’s a different name when I go to buy a cuppa coffee for you so let me know if that name is correct on there doesn’t say tiny orchards.
I’m glad you liked it! I do have a juki 2010! Here is the seam guide I use. I’ve seen the price lower on other websites but this one had better pictures of what exactly it is: www.kenssewingcenter.com/juki-adjustable-seam-guide.html

Thank you for the video regarding 1/4 inch seam allowance. This helps a lot!
Thank you for this video. There is so much information in here I may have to watch it a second time. LOL
OMG this is just what I needed to watch. Thank you.
New channel for me. I am enjoying your tutorials.

Very good information!! I have struggled with a correct 1/4" seam allowance for years!!! Who would have thought that even which way you press changes things?? Thank you so much for the valuable lesson!!!

Lol!! I'm glad I could help even if it is late :)

Thank you so much!! And what a great idea!! I’ve been saving mine since I made this to make a little striped pillow cover or something. ❤️
Thanks!
I still love this video! Came back for refresher before starting a new project today!!
VERY worthwhile. Enjoy all your posts. Thank you !!!
this was wonderful - you explain things so well and give the reasons behind what you do which is excellent. Now I will have to give it a try as I've been frustrated with my blocks not coming out "perfect" and have been concerned about getting that perfect 1/4" seam allowance - a great method for testing - thanks so much!
WOW who knew that those pesky little wiggles in a seam line could make such a difference! Thank you for such a wonderful tutorial on the subject.
Wow! I didn’t realize that the direction of pressing would change the accuracy of the seam as well! I will now do these tests for each project, too.
Thank you so much. I’m trying to teach myself to quilt. I think you just saved me a lot of frustration.
This is so not my trash quilting. Why are you trying to make me better? Damnit Megra. I will soon be princess of the thread! Thanks. Awesome video
You have to have perfect seam allowances if you want to sew 1/16” stripes with me! 😂
What an elegant way to test seam allowance.
Thank you! I have a Juki the same as your’s… and I’ve been really struggling to get my 1/4” seam perfect. I learnt a lot from your quick video… the pressing direction of the seam, I’m not being pedantic (this seam allowance really matters) and I need the seam guide you have!
will definately be doing this at the start of every project.... thanks
Thank you once again. As I said before, the information you give us is gold!
Thank you for this super detailed tutorial! I’ve been quilting for years, sometimes getting frustrated with my seam width, and learned a couple of new tricks and explanations from this!
Thank you for this idea!
I am constantly coming up. with botched seams
even on clothing! You teach so clearly!
Thank you!! ❤️

oh elle! I've been there!! Maybe someday I'll show everyone my first quilt 😂 I don't think theres a single point that matches!
No wonder I had this frustrating problem. I was always so careful cutting and sewing and it was just not working out correctly. I figured it was because I was a newbie to quilting and hoped it would get better with each quilt, but it didn't! Thank you a million times for this video!

Thank you so much, Gia!! I really appreciate that :). I hope you love the seam guide as much as i do! :)
Wow I wish I had known this before my first big quilt. THANKS
A great reminder on how important seam width is.
At last a brilliant method to check my seams, my quilt tops should now be the size they're supposed to be. Thanks so much!
You are so welcome! I’m glad it was helpful. I really struggled with seam allowances for the longest time!
Isn't it surprising how different machines are?? I had to change the default setting on my janome so I could get a 1/4" quite a bit!
Thank you for this, it works great and I'll be building up an nice little scrap quilt of my projects
What a GREAT Vid... !!!
Very thorough and well presented!
Thanks for pointing me to this video! Wow ..I had no idea ..I will need to experiment with my machine. ❤️❤️❤️
I hope it helps :) I never really worry about the seam side of my quilt as long as it’s flat. Nobody will ever see it anyway :)
Excellent information thx from Ontario 🇨🇦
Very informative. I had no idea that pressing a different way could change your seam..Thanks!
I was quite surprised at the difference it made!! It seems like such a small thing but it would add up over a lot of seams.
This is great video ! I love the way you explain. Thanks !!
Awesome tutorial! I’m definitely going to use your tips to help me!
Mercie from Switzerland
Totally awesome! TERRIFIC TIP!
You are a quilting genius! Thank you for the inspiration
Lol that’s quite a compliment!
Very informative. I have been trying to perfect my 1/4-inch seams, and the pressing of the seam can also make a difference! Thank you. Oh yes, I have tried moving the needle too, and that helps as well.
I hope this helped :)
Great idea and so simple.
Love your way you teach. I do have a question about the seam gauge. You mention you different ones that you use in these comments. Can you clarify?
Such a useful tutorial again. Thank you.
So glad it was helpful!

What is the seam/fabric guage thingy you are using?
Super helpful 🙏 thanks a lot
This really is a pain in the neck when you think your sewing with the correct seam allowance but it doesn’t come out correctly. Thanks for the great info.
This was a great video, very helpful!
I would also like to know what seam guide you are using. I also have a Juki, but my guide is not like yours.
Very helpful. Thanks! Is there a particular type of iron you like to use for pressing 1/4” seams open?
Very helpful, new subscriber based on this excellent video.
For a long time I gave up trying to piece more complicated patterns. Why? Because the seams don't nest even though I've measured the distance from seam to edge of fabric (internal whopping if it's a perfect 1/4 seam!). Washi tape, masking tape... I'm glad you liked it!! Pressing direction seems to matter in my piecing but maybe its different for others :). I hope you find some quilting time for yourself!
Thank you! Great video.!
I’m so glad you liked it! ❤️
How do you know when to pivot your needle to keep the quarter inch seam?
I hate to say this, but practice. Some machines have feet with marks on them that measure 1/4 from the needle. Or you could mark your own with some nail polish or a marker.
Great question
Thank you, I almost give up perfect 1/4 inch seam .......
I’m glad I could help!
A great tip. Thanks
Love your channel!
i was thinking the same thing.
Thank you so much for all the information that you shared here on RUclips. I wanted to buy you a cuppa coffee and I see it’s a different name when I go to buy a cuppa coffee for you so let me know if that name is correct on there doesn’t say tiny orchards.
I love your green chair! Where did you get it?
From ikea! It sadly doesn't come in green any longer--just boring black. :(
Very helpful thank you- new subscriber ✅😊👍🏼
Welcome!! I’m so glad you enjoyed it :)
Thank you great video
Thank you! :)
great tip!
Thanks!!
Thanks for this video it's great. Where did you get your seam guide on your machine. I have a juki tl2010q is that what your machine is.
I’m glad you liked it! I do have a juki 2010! Here is the seam guide I use. I’ve seen the price lower on other websites but this one had better pictures of what exactly it is: www.kenssewingcenter.com/juki-adjustable-seam-guide.html
@@TinyOrchardQuilts Thank you
👍👍thank you
I’m a year late but great advice. Thank you most sincerely
Great info
Clashing colors are cool tho! I really don't know much about sewing😂just trying to learn.
Thanks....great info!
Thank you!
your thread can also make you need to check your 1/4" seam
Thank you!
You're welcome!
If you’re sewing on a Juki, you get a perfect 1/4 seam every time. No effort required!!
Whaaaa? My blocks may actually all come out close to the same size?
I have blocks where I press some seams open and some to the side.
I do as well-it all depends how theyll ultimately go together :)
What machine are you using with that nifty metal guide?
It’s a juki! The little metal guide is an attachment that screws on. Most of it swings out of the way when I don’t want it. Here is a link: www.kenssewingcenter.com/juki-adjustable-seam-guide.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwyJn5BRDrARIsADZ9ykGwThwpXipu7GZdJKzKN1csBlZjG198llK7-IsEGW7e1iIzegp33VcaAi1WEALw_wcB
