Apparently this is reminiscent of the cities that were lost to West Germany after WW2, when the GDR was founded. There are also streets with these city names around the station (Breslauer Straße, Magdeburger Straße etc.). This is the only information I could find.
@@MetroCheck During the Gründerzeit (1870 - 1914) most of these urban new housing developments had similar group names of cities, countries, artists, flora, fauna, rivers, ... to strengthen national identity.
That was probably common practice, but in this case the streets only received their current names in June 1946, when it was decided to change all street names with a Nazi or military background in Gelsenkirchen (of which there were many...).
Gelsenkirchen liegt im Ruhrgebiet, nördlich von Bochum. Ich wohne hier seit drei Jahren und nutze gern die U-Bahn.
