as an audio engineer, some feedback about eq boost. as well as boosting some bass frequencies, you should also do a high pass filter, at 100hz or so. that way you are boosting the frequencies relevant to your voice but cutting the really low ambient fluff like road noise. raise the high pass filter till you hear it taking body out of your voice.
Ditto for bass roll off switches. A vanlife vlog we’ve watched for years - he bought a new diesel pickup and the YT playback is horrible when they’re in the truck. Editing on a little notebook is great, but it helps to test on all sorts of devices - to lockdown your mixdown routine. I almost typed poutine.
I keep going back to my old Sennheiser MKE400 micro-shotgun. The battery power gives much better volume and distance pickup than the battery-less ones that rely on the camera pre-amps.
Rode best all around. Best directionality. I liked the sound outdoors and in. No Eq boost - that was too bassy. The others have their strong points, but the Rode has no fatal flaws and is cheaper.
TH I preferred the deeper bassiness of the Rode, but in any case neither the Deity or the Sennheiser are available locally and the Rode is about half the expected price of the senny at NZD (pacific peso) $109 and the Deity just isn't being imported
Put the Rode deadcat on the Deity! Also, the Zoom H4 deadcat will go over the whole mic if you don’t want to use the switch. I use the Rode on the front and a little foamie on the back with the D4.

Sennheiser looks promising. But the deity beats everything with their two channels. The backsided mic is just dope. So much so, that I would use as the main mic.
Hi Cassey great comparison. The one i feel recorded better your voice was the Sennheiser. Feel that out of the 3 did a much better job of the bunch. Like always the content of your videos as it comes across as honest and right to the point. Thanks for your effort and fun ways "_"
Here is a genius idea for (the) Sennheiser : have the mic mounted on a swivel base than can rotate 180deg. The audio cable connection would be on the base (then it’s not moving when you rotate the mic). You attach the base to hot shoe and never touch it again. Then you can just easily rotate the mic 180deg depending on your vlogging situation (front or rear facing). Perhaps have a detent or easy locking mechanism to keep mic at 0deg or 180deg. Cable stays in place at all time and you always get perfect sound. Just like a flippy screen. Bam !! Perfect vlogging mic 🤓 (they’d better send me a free one when they make it 😄)
This was so funny especially when the had the Sennheier T-Shirt on. I ordered the Deity the other day because of the rear mic. But I might buy the sennheier too.
My choice is the 1) Rode then 2) Sennheiser then 3) Deity. The Deity sound is a little tinny but is great as a rear mic. The price, sound quality and easy of use put the rode first overall but the Sennheiser is a close second and the Deity a close third. Overall you wouldn't lose with any of these mic's. Oh sure pick Sennheiser because they gave you a T-Shirt 😂😂😂
Audio engineers: tries to make back sound rejection on shotgun mics as strong as possible Vlogers: this mic sounds more quiet from behind. Thats why its worst
If you find you have too much bass with some mics, try Multiband Compression or Dynamic EQ instead of Standard EQ. It stops the bass from becoming overpowering. Also, a mic being more 'sensitive' just means it'll have less 'static' noise, not less background noise. Background noise has to do with the polar pattern, and it appear the Sennheiser is supercardioid so will pick up mostly from the front (fairly wide), some from the back (very narrow) and none from the sides. The rode will be more cardioid (more from the sides but nothing from the back in relation to the Sennheiser).
Deity for run and gun. Rode for front audio only. Sennheiser for mostly indoor work and stabilized setups. You're welcome. 👍 The cost differences aren't worth the bother, just get the one you need.

Excellent review. The only thing that was confusing is the part where you replayed the short-clip tests in a row. For a moment I thought I rewinded the video.
as with video, there are two ways to tune your mic. Either tweak to make it look/sound good, or calibrate to make it look/sound accurate. Usually the latter needs to be done first, before adjusting to taste. So I would recommend playing and recording some sample notes at different pitches but at the same volume, then eq the video so that any quiet pitches are corrected; but make sure you dont over correct, as it can have a knock on effect. Use 1khz as the main reference volume.
(1) Inside Sennheiser sounds good. Outside Sennheiser sounds terrible. It seems to pick up white noise and amplify it. Can you turn the Rode mic around on the camera? At that point it would have been a clear winner. (2) Can you make a similar test for lapel mics? (3) In the end just say 'no' to on-camera mics for vlogging.
