I really enjoyed your review, between yours and Alicia's I am convinced this mothership is not for me. I am an avid fan who used to buy motherships because they were the IT palette of the year. This is a pale shadow of this format of palette. It marks the end of an era. I guess we will need someone else to take Pat's place with a brand that offers the baked textures in interesting colors.

PML should release special shade singles and quads and people keep calling for this as holiday quads again. I feel like the cheaper price point would be more accessible to everyday consumers and then people won’t be so fatigued by the same colour story. CT proved it could be popular last holidays. I miss the baked shades and I’m just waiting for the brand to realise there are many more wearable or colourful options - bring on the neutrals, taupes, camel, green, light teal, peach, orange or purple; I will take anything different at this point!

I have never in my life worn pink shadows though; the average makeup consumer likes to collect whether they wear certain colors or not. It’s clear by the fact that this palette is basically a replica of the last two and everyone still ran to buy it. She could do purples, grays, anything else but this stupid repetitive pink concept lol I’m so annoyed. Motherships should be exclusive and special since she releases regular palettes as well.

I don’t agree - we have had an avalanche of green palettes in the last year which have been a hit and the green single by Charlotte Tilbury is what quickly sold out at a huge markup. Lisa Eldridge sorcery palette sold out fast too. It’s all about the colour combinations as most neutral lovers feel comfortable experimenting with green. Everyday consumers may wish for something unusual to justify the high price of PML - as an example my sister who only wears Tarte pinks/browns went straight to the blue PML palette as it caught her eye as a style that was special to what she has. Just my opinion 😊

  • @DeborahCarlston

I think replacing the special baked shades with regular metallics is a mistake. I don't think Pat is even involved in the design of these palettes anymore. This looks like it was put together by a corporate marketing committee. Plus you can't get that many great looks from this palette. You are really great at application, so that last look is very pretty. But I don't need this. If I wanted to get a pink palette, I'd get the YSL Babylone Roses. And Spontini Lillies is on my radar too. Also, thanks for using My Dream by ND in your comparisons. I have that and was wondering. Thanks so much for a very thorough video. Happy Saturday!💚

At this point, if she made an all neutral brown palette it would probably surpass the sales of her pink palettes. I think most of the people that like the pink color story are people who enjoy neutrals anyway, so it would still hit the target demographic while giving some variety. I’m going to get this new palette but I’m definitely going to wait for a sale!

  • @RoseOfMadina

My first MS was Divine Rose 2. I loved the tones, the quality, blendability and OH the baked glittery shades! Just fabulous. It got me hooked on Pat Mcgrath and I have so many palettes of her now.
It was also the first luxury eyeshadow palette I had ever purchased.
I noticed single baked shadows are very expensive, motherships used to contain 4 of those and then additional 6 'regular' shades and with the luxury packaging and quality, it justified the price for me.
I loved playing with these 'artistry' palettes, with the transformative topper shade. One could combine them with other palettes, jazz up a mundane eye look.
The sparkle and dimensionality in the astrals was insane, especially when the light hit. It's like you have a thousand mini-stars on your eyes.
I also noticed they didn't fade or crease, even on my oily eyelids.
I am thoroughly disappointed in what direction Pat went into and will not be purchasing motherships anymore.
I especially dislike them not being transparant about this, as well as reducing the quality of the packaging and smaller pan sizes.

Your eyeshadow reviews are becoming pretty much the best out there on RUclips so thank you very much! I really enjoyed seeing the simple flat-lay comparison of palettes as I could pause and really take a look at the comparison. I wonder if Pat McGrath will ever do a customisable palette system with all her shadows that exist. That would probably go well as we can't move her shadows around and we might all want to make one or two 'ideal palettes' for ourselves. There is a lot of excitement and consumer 'fun' involved in customising a palette, so this might be interesting and then everyone gets what they want. Also, if Pat released a kind of Biba-style palette, a neutral 'go to' palette (an extension of Velvet Liaison), this might be a great idea, too.

Perfect every day palette for me, with the PML twist. I bought it with the perspective of getting a palette of one and done shades, basically, with the possibility of doing something more. It is not as artistic as her old mothership, for sure, but it still has a place in the collection of a brand, in my opinion.
For the crimson shade (which I don't like much): I saw a girl saying that if you pick it up with your finger, then rub it with another finger and use what is left on your "original" finger, you get the luminosity but the chunks go away with the rubbing so the texture on the eyes works better.

You freed me with your last Pat video. The brand has changed. I was not wanting to accept that, but it’s true. It must be working for them in a business way and for the majority of consumers. That’s great! It’s not my thing for $128, but good for all the people that prefer the palettes now.
It freed me because I have all of the Motherships and 95% of everything else she’s released…until this year. Instead of feeling frustrated by that, I just feel lucky to have all the gorgeous palettes and baked shades I have and treasure them more. But the brand isn’t for me in the way that it was and that’s okay! I actually think the formulas in her 5 pans are more innovative than what’s in Sunlit Seduction.
Now…I STILL love her mattes. They are versatile. I love her shimmers and metallics (they just aren’t unique to her brand like the baked shades are)
I’d never buy this palette at $128, but for a steep discount, it would definitely be worth it to me! Luckily for all of us, it’s easy to wait for a 40% discount because it happens all the time on her site! Woot!
I’m not sure I’ll ever get this one because I have so many of these shades from her already. But if she releases other neutral color stories than pink, I think these formulas are worth $77.
But if she releases single or a quad of baked shades for holiday…I will snap those up on release day whatever she charges with an alarm set to make sure I don’t miss it!!

The next time it’s some other Mothership that will get the $77 price tag for a week or two.

I think you gave it a thorough and fair review. I loved the looks you did with the palette and, as someone who just ordered it yesterday (with the eyeshadow primer, a 10 percent discount and two half priced Bridgerton pink/nude lipsticks that I loved... and a free gift of two mini lipsticks and a liner... making it come out to a more reasonable price point for me), I'm not unhappy I got it. I have all of the motherships, except one (the Naomi Campbell one), and as much as I covet them, I find that I'm just in too much of a hurry to use them as day to day palettes. They're more for going out or dressing up to me. I got this one because this looks like it will be my workhorse, I'm in a hurry and I need pinky nudes and a couple of copper and taupes to slap on in a hurry on my way out the door. I feel like this will do that for me and I'll end up wearing this more than any of my others. It's the difference between a fancy dress and a work dress -- you might get more use from the work dress, but you collect the fancy ones because they make you feel special.Tthey are a splurge, a treat. I have been wearing my Natasha Denona "My Dream Palette" to death for this reason. It's quick and easy and has the color story I need for my fair to medium skin, dark hair, blue eyes. My other Pat Palettes are cooler, not as warm for the most part. I think the makeup market has changed with the release of all the indies that are now hand pressing duochrome palettes. These are the new "night out" shades I'm wanting (but can't wear every day). Maybe Pat sees this shift and is going with it. I honestly think her matte formula and her shimmers are a much higher quality than Huda or Patrick Ta, or the others you mentioned, and I would always pick her formula over theirs. I have sensitive lids, hooded eyes, mature skin (but I love sparkle and fun, I'm immature at heart I guess, plus I'm also an artist so I love to play with color). I'm building up a collection of Indie brands for dressup and play and now, with this palette, I'll have my day outfit. Plus, if you wear makeup every day, it doesn't last forever, right? (said the queen of rationalization). Thanks for the wonderful review. I have since subscribed and looking forward to following you and hearing more of your takes in the future.

I think the sales are a good indicator of a lot of her target consumers having the same feeling, that I have been having for the couple of last years, is that particularly her expensive Mothership palettes don't really offer anything unique anymore for the price tag she is asking from them. You can get similar peachy or pinky neutral colour stories from other luxury and higher-end brands at a lower price point. I think this newest palette is particularly hard sell for the 120 USD, because I don't think the shimmer shades are anything like "special" shades she use to have, they are just basic shimmers in which some of them have a slight shift to another colour. I think the consumer now looking for more of those special shades will go to an indie brand that is specializes in those shades and they might even get them for a lesser money than buying a Mothership at a full price. The more mainstream consumer looking for a high-end palette will look at her palette and compare it to and ND, Huda Beauty or even a Tarte palette and go for one of the last three, when they see that aside from the packaging, the contents of the palette don't really match up with the price being asked for it.

I think you nailed it. I remember when she first launched the motherships, she was on Nikki tutorials channel demonstrating them, which I thought was strange considering that Nikki’s audience is typically younger and probably are going to lean towards affordable makeup. I think she has a hard time finding her footing with a saturated market, indie brands doing a lot of multichromes, and trying to find the customer base that will pay luxury prices but are more adventurous (this is before all the pink palettes), and now having to please her investors and make money, which is the bottom line. I think to me the confusion is in who PMG is marketing to at the moment. Will the average consumer pay PMG prices for a pretty basic color story with nothing special when they can pay a quarter of that for a run of the mill palette that will be just as good in terms of result? Or half that for a Natasha Denona palette that is more versatile and interesting? PMG built her following on being interesting and unique, and the people who have promoted her brand the most are the people asking for more creativity from her. It's also this false dichotomy - either pink and gold, or some crazy colors, but there are so many options in between. Again, Natasha Denona is a good example of this. Maybe it's easier to see because I've never been a PMG stan, but it honestly looks like she has tapped out creatively and her brand has evolved into something else. Now it looks similar to Charlotte Tilbury, who keeps pushing out the same browny pink products over and over again. Especially with how her customer service has been silencing and blocking fans online who have dared to ask for a different color story, this smells like a downfall to me.

A whole lot of times, I end up in the same situation you were with that dark chunky color and then there isn’t enough contrast, I’m frustrated and I look like I’m trying badly for a super smokey eye. It’s a disaster. If I spent more time with the Motherships I’d probably get better at it but I just feel overwhelmed. I wish I had your lid space. I love how your eyes are shaped!! ❤❤

It’s a pass for me and I will cherish my 10 other mothership palettes. To add to your comment about her business, this palette hurt her brand with raving fans… it only makes sense like you said if they are cutting costs and trying to grow fast. (Wait for a lot of fire sales in the next few months). What’s next is a sale to a larger group (Ester Lauder, L’Oreal…). It may end up with Pat taking her millions and distancing herself from her brand, even starting her own smaller brand. They could have made the choice of creating a “line” for mass market and keep innovative more expensive luxury leaning products for fans. It adds complexity and require more investments though… as I know you know from your own professional background… :) that’s why I’m thinking we’ll see a sale by next year. Her investors want a quick return on investment even if the brand is taking a hit. I’ll wait for the next phase, see what she’ll come up with in the next couple of years. In the mean time my money went to Prada, Suqqu, and Byredo. 😂

I understand why she released this colour story because this is what is selling right now. But honestly who will buy the same colour story over and over again? It's a good palette for someone who likes everyday looks or who is a casual customer. I wouldn't buy this since I do not feel it justifies the high price tag when I have so many similar palettes.

5 years or more I was really into to Pat McGrath. I own four quads, and five motherships unfortunately. This palette looks similar to the ones I own, boring, which I will probably end up throwing away or giving to my daughter. To me her eyeshadows seem chalky, dry, and lack that high quality properties that I enjoy from other high-end brands. These days, I prefer Guerlain eye quads, even over Charlotte Tilbury and TOM FORD.

I think you did a superb job with all these looks Sophia. You showed how versatile this Mothership XI Sunlit can really be on the eyes for day to night. Also depending upon one's preference towards the rose plum to bronze. I really like look 2 and 3. Look 3 my fave cause I do enjoy a one and done single shadow with glittery or sparkle effect. Showing the comparisons within PML Motherships and lieu to other brands was also on point. The rose with the neutrals color story is what driving the $ market at this time. Like the trends of our interests for specific color stories rise to top, the brands will start to follow in pursuit. At the end of the day it is business. When it is the one palette that steals our attention whether "viral" hyped up" "on demand", the other brands will see it and create a similar. Hence I feel we start to see the replication in color stories. I personally will love to continue seeing explosion of creativity in the Motherships. It's fun! Because I see Pat McGrath as an interesting and super creative runway makeup artist, I want all that fire to transcend in these motherships and quads. I would also like to see on her channel how she envisions Sunlit and others of her creations onto the models. Like Natasha Denona does on her models. It seems like we get to learn from the actual eye of their creation and personable.
She experimented with the last four shades. I particularly prefer those Blitz Astrals (baked special shades). They do add to some magical play in each Mothership. I do think she intended this Mothership XI Sunlit to interplay with Mothership V Bronze Seduction and Moonlit Seduction. What's interesting how the colors can look similar in the pan but swatched differently on the eyelids or skin comparing the other shadows from Motherships. Price point is the lacquered packaging, raised embossed and laser printed info on back. Also paying for name, special shades, and motherships are collectibles. I do see argument made in terms of pricing. Cost of goods and surplus may account for the pricing.
It is still a very beautiful palette. It will be a split for those who are evaluating, preferencing or selecting in comparison to already color stories in one's collection. It's worth thinking what is suitable to our needs. IF we have ton of similar stories, either we gravitate more to it, could be overly consuming or simply collecting. It's fun to hear perspectives and see everyone's eye on the shadow.
Sorry for my book comment 😂

I agree with many of the points with the heavy pink usage in PML. But interesting to me is I do chronically hear about the $128 price tag debate for her motherships… but rarely do I hear the same argument about thing like tomford $90 quads which also tends to favor pinks but seems to get less criticism IMO

    • @kateaye3506

Tom Ford quads are AUD149 now, compared to PML motherships at AUD209 (at last check). The Tom Fords I have tried have been okay, but nothing special. Certainly not worth the price tag. I'd much prefer to pay AUD60 more for this mothership, though it isn't really my colour story. Heck, even Prada is way more interesting than Tom Ford.

Hi Sofia! I thoroughly enjoyed your review of the new Mothership XI, all the eye looks, swatches and comparisons! What you’re saying is basically what I’m hearing from other RUclipsrs. Even Alicia Archer was less excited about it, and she also didn’t care for the way Blitz Crimson applied. Pat has clearly changed her formula for the blitz astral shadows, and it’s not for the better. I did order this palette, but I’m questioning whether I should keep it. I don’t know how difficult it would be to try to return it. Plus I did order her new eyeshadow primer with the IntensifEYES. I’m wondering if those products might make a difference in how these apply. So far I haven’t seen any reviews yet for the new eyeshadow primer. I know she had a video showing both products being used with this palette. Other than that, I really do like the color story of this palette. To be honest, I didn’t start buying Pat’s palettes until she came out with her Divine Rose series. In fact, I’ve purchased every one of her Divine Rose mothership palettes, and my first eyeshadow purchase was for the Ritualistic Rose quad. So I guess you could say I’m a sucker for those cute pink palettes! Lol
