How To Make A Soup Can Stove

The stove in this video is an excellent little wood stove that burns fuel cleanly, and unlike DIY alcohol stoves can burn for long periods of time without needing to be extinguished to refuel. I also prefer wood stoves over alcohol because you don't need to carry fuel with you, sticks are a renewable resource you can find almost anywhere.
My DIY pot stand is composed of three steel wires, each with a 90 degree bend on both sides. There are also three sections of steel tubing (brake line) that are the legs of the stand. The bend in the wires are inserted into the legs to make a triangle shape between the three. It's a very stable design. Excellent mod of the old hobo stove. I've used these but never thought of making the feet for it. Something that works well in an urban survival situation is Purell. Take any hand sanitizer, if one is short of funds, it can often be found in construction site sani-cans, the front of grocery stores or in medical buildings. pour it into a can, it is alcohol gel and will burn by itself but works much better if 'distilled' by pouring a teaspoon of salt into it, stirring and straining through any handy cloth. You'll then have fuel that is closer in alcohol concentration as rubbiung alcohol (which can often be had for about $1. Toilet paper or fast food napkins can be placed in the can to hold the liquid and prevent spillage. Dry sand can also be used as an absorbent material .That stove kept me and another alive through a very cold winter.
Thanks for sharing your information also. Yeah it used to be you could buy 70% alcohol for a dollar at the dollar store, now you're lucky if you can find 50% alcohol at any store since the planned dimmick.
Can you explain the salt process for making it distilled?
I camp alot and never once thought if a metal can cook stove. Easier to do than building a log fire and wasting wood.

Excellent video -- thank you! The best thing about this is its simplicity! (I've been making can stove for more than a half century; yours is one of the best.
One point: The reason the pot stand has three legs/feet is because three make for a much more stable platform. If you reduce the number of feet on the can stove to three, it will most likely be more stable (and much stronger). You can still cut a few smaller vent holes in-between the three feet for air (and underneath the stove). BTW, you can also make 4 of the top rim holes large and four small and still be able to feed the flame. These things will make the stove much stronger.

For a pot stand you can use three to four tent stakes with the tip bent over, typical stakes that come with tents

That's the easiest and best soup can stove I've seen so far, made one within minutes. Adding 2 tent pegs through 4 top holes creates a base for my ssteel mug. Going to make a pot stand too. The can I used is wide enough to house my Stanley pot w. the lid, there is even space at the bottom for some useful smaller 'stuff'. Thanks for posting, btw. cute bird
I made one of these out of a 12 oz coffee can. I put four small sheet metal screws in the bottom for feet. It works absolutely amazing! Awesome idea thanks :-)
Love the video. I used a metal coffee can and I use it all the time when I'm out in nature. From fishing, hunting, or just out for a few days in the woods just enjoying nature
I remember this from my Dad. Dad did this when he was an Infantryman during the end of WWII and when he was in Korea during the Korean War. Dad called this the Infantryman's stove. You only did this inside your foxhole, trench, or behind a hill where the enemy can't observe you from. Soldiers would heat up C-Rations or make coffee in a canteen cup. Before Vietnam soldiers would use small sticks or other wood to fuel the fire up until the heat tablets. The WWII Germans had ESBIT stoves but the fuel tabs ran out quick. G.I.s made holes in the ground and put rocks around them to make a fire ring. I was never a Boy Scout but my Dad was a Combat Infantryman. I used his knowledge later when I was in the Army.

My kitchen drawer. It's my best beer opener.
I loved making these with my dad our design was a little different, but the same principal was followed. Weused coffe cans.We used screw drivers to poke the holes and then used coat hanger wire to keep the can of benas/soup from falling in. We'd bring a single coffee can and 2 cams of beans with us when we went out grouse hunting in Grayling. Makes for a fun lunch. Cheers.

The metal is soft enought to easily bend by hand. I made two after watching this video and, with bare female hands, I didn't come close to any accidents or injuries. Obviously, be smart and watch how you're handling the cut edges. Once the punched out triangles are bent into place, a person would have to really try to get themselves cut on it. Also, those can openers are cheap old-school and readily available in Walmart and other discount stores. BTW, the can stoves work great :-)

Love the idea behind this and, considering I live in a forest, it's a really good one for me to keep in mind. The simplicity behind it is ingenious.
Also, this is perhaps the best video I've seen that's been sponsored by Blue Apron. This video doesn't sell itself short and it doesn't sell Blue Apron short (one of which seems to always happen in sponsored videos), and they both compliment each other well, considering cooking is the general theme. This is a great example of what videos should be like in regards to the sponsor's product--they're complimentary.

I have watched MANY VIDEOS on this subject.
I plan to use a coffee can, or a can from industrial use such as restaurant use.
If you put bricks alongside the cans, you can place a grill over top of the can using the bricks as a steady holder for pots and pans ect. That's my plan to improvise with the tin can stove.

I love this craft! After I've made a couple of them, they only take 30 sec to make. A good tip if your punch is strong enough is to dig from the side and through the bottom in one motion. Cheers!

Very entertaining video. I have seen something like this on a well known BBC reality show but the person , who was ex army completely failed, as such I thought a stove made from an old can was a non starter. You have shown how it should be done.

Awesome, this is my favorite diy woodstove design in general, and I really like your bottom hole/feet mod, instead of just side vents. Haven't made one in a while, but I have two "chunky" cans which are slightly taller than average set aside for this summer.

I did about the same thing with a larger can. I found a can of green beans that had a diameter large enough to hold a sterno can but not too tall. I've used it indoors and doesn't require a pot stand. Thanks for the video and best of luck to you.

I can't believe I watched this already! It was a couple years ago. Wasn't even subscribed back then, was just looking for camping tips. I actually made this back then, and failed to make a sustainable fire due to using sticks that were too green. It's amazing how I rediscovered you and all your awesome content, without realizing I've already seen one of your videos.

Thanks for this video, I really appreciate it. I like how easy it is to make as-needed. I can just empty the contents of my can into a metal cup, make the can into a stove, and then heat the food that is in the cup! Great for emergency situations when I may not already have a stove with me.

I'm already building up my stores. The first thing was tinned food and the 8 hour burn tea lights. I have about 800 of them. Some small solar panels, along with battery charging circuit and lowish power LED lighting. IE my LEDs draw 50mA from the battery so a 2500mAh battery will give me light for two days strait. I use a cluster of 7 LEDs so they are way under driven (so slightly more efficient and way more life). I can tell you how to do it if you want.

This valuable info will come in handy in case of a earthquake or some other kind of crises and force me to hit the mountains, which are very close to where I live. I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada and our city is right next door to Stanely Park which is a forest next door to our city. As well one can move north to north shore (North Vancouver City) and North shore is next door to wild mountains that go on and on into wild wilderness. Just went thru Hurricane Florence and wish I had this info before as I was trying to cook with grill and ran out of charcoal! Thank God the power is back on but will use this in the future . Nice work n keep it up! Btw you have the perfect voice and delivery for these type vids!
Use pliers to completely turn tab tight. No sharp hazards on stove.
Also, coat hanger wire handle allows moving stove safely:
Tap 2 holes with nail near top of the can. Cut wire loop
(2×height + width ) &
bend ends into L.
Insert wire in holes, &
bend to form hooks at end of the loop.
Two handles are better than just one about 1/2 inch apart.
Wrap handle top with wire heat sink for safe handling.....
Also a great way to minimise the chances of starting fires in the countryside as the flames and embers are contained.
I made a custom stove stand with a coat hanger to go with the home made stove very easy just use your imagination :-).

The food looks good too. When we make salmon I sliced the top of the fish and I put it in an oven with butter salt pepper and some fresh sliced lemon on it; and then I make up a mixture of mayonnaise with Gray poupon mustard, Just enough to cover the salmon. Are you equal amounts of mayonnaise and the mustard. Then I put that on top and let it just come to a golden brown, and serve it. It's absolutely fantastic tasting. The fish cooks in like a very short time, so it's not in the oven too long, and with the mixture of the mayonnaise and the mustard it's absolutely delicious.
I was doing basically the same thing in Cub Scouts 60 yrs ago.

Very cool. Went camping as a kid but, sadly, haven't done it since. We hiked and cooked on bunsen burners (flip an empty #10 can onto a flame (candle?) and cooked breakfast on top). I LOVED IT!!!
