Hero of the Pearl Harbor defense Dorie Miller was killed when USS Liscome Bay was attacked and sunk (36:43). On December 7, 1941, he was a mess attendant on USS West Virginia. He helped move the badly wounded captain, then took over an unoccupied .50 cal machine gun that he had learned how to use minutes before. He claimed one aircraft killed while shooting at multiple aircraft. He's credited with two kills. He assisted other wounded Sailors until the crew abandoned ship. Miller received the Navy Cross for his valor at Pearl Harbor.
