I loved Trapdoor on the Spectrum when I was a kid, even though I had no idea what to do. I just enjoyed controlling Berk. Don't think I ever accomplished anything whatsoever in the game.
Loved trapdoor on the spectrum when I was young collecting the worms and slimeys, trying to figure out how to cook the requests. I recall you had to frighten the bird monster so it laid an egg and then you could cook it and send it up in the lift, don’t remember ever completing it. I got the follow up Through the Trap door and had no idea what to do in that.
I loved the TV show so much I was determined to get into the game. Took me bloody ages mind you, and I don't think I ever actually finished it, but I did figure out a lot of the puzzles. The follow up game was absolute rubbish, though.
Oh God, the Archers. My parents were both massive fans, so every dinner time involved having to sit in absolute silence between 7 and 7:15 whilst they listen to it. And if we were really unlucky, we'd have a car journey on a Sunday morning where they'd listen to them all again in the omnibus.
Think yourself lucky. My much beloved late mother liked having cartoons on the TV as background ambience whilst she sat on the sofa knitting like a woman possessed. No man should have had to suffer the amount of Yogi Bear, Tom & Jerry, Tweetie Pie, Roadrunner etc that I witnessed during my formative teen years. Though on the upside, I did develop a lifelong love of Foghorn Leghorn from those times. lol
Yep that Young Ones game took me quite alot of investigating on my road to completing it, I've done a full longplay on it with commentary if you'd like to watch it. Thanks for rthe shout-out btw!
Being a huge fan I was so gutted when I bought it back then. I got that and world cup carnival at the same time. I was pissed when I got home and saw how bad they both were but still played them for hours. I had no choice lol.
Looking at the Don Priestley games again they really are quite amazing in the visual department with the size and no colour clash. I remember buying Trapdoor for a measly £1.99 budget range, loading it up the first time and being amazed at the visuals. It was like have the tv show on the Speccy in my mind at the time and I could not think of another Spectrum game as close looking to the source material. I am going to try Gregory Lose His clock out. Thanks for the video and what an entertaining channel you have. Merry Christmas.
The scary part is that I actually could identify all the clips in the intro and pretty much all the TV licenses discussed. Over here in my neck of the woods (the Netherlands) BBC TV was available and was often the better option compared to Dutch, Belgian or German TV. That says something. It also makes some Dutch folk like me erie aliens who "have been listening and watching your broadcasts for decades and pretty much know all there is to know about UK society." 😬😁🤣
Oh, How I've missed these Kim Justice originals. The Ode to Yakety Sax is just so uniquely you, Kim. I'm still subscribed, but I so rarely get any kind of notification or indication that you've released anything new. Your channel is my digital comfort food that whenever I want some late night video to fall asleep to, I'll generally go back to your Licensed Games from A to Z Playlist (as I pretty nearly know it by heart now) and put it on Autoplay. Glad to see you are staying true to your style!
I loved all the references to the show in the Young Ones, right down to the wardrobe leading to Narnia because of a brief segment in the programme where Vivian ends up in Narnia during a game of hide and seek.
What's that, Kim? You made a video specifically for me? Why thank you! For some reason I now remembered there was a Frankie Goes To Hollywood game. And a How To Be A Complete Bastard game.
SpecDrum (mad by Cheetah which was mentioned in the 3-2-1 section) was that good I can still to this day recall many of the songs it produced, well ahead of its time it was , and amazing to see such sound quality on the Speccy back in the day, even if it was only mono with a single phono output lol
If there's one thing that I remember Orpheus for, it's Electrosound, the popular music editor for the Commodore 64 released in 1985. Music in that tool ended up being used in a fair number of C64 games during 1986 and 1987 especially.
I just want to say I adore and respect your work. I grew up in the apple II and amiga era of gaming, and I didn't know any of these titles. I say you should a wonderful view of history, and you have a lovely voice doing it as well.
I'm legitimately planning a licensed spectrum TV games livestream over Christmas so this is fantastic! Looking forward to checking this out! Also big up MINDER! What an absolute classic.
Excellent round-up, KJ. Your an excellent editor and narrator/presenter! ♥ Belated happy Christmas! ☃ 10:59 The speccy Minder game was great, I played it to death. Then sold it... for a profit, geezer.
Oddly, 3-2-1 has had a mini resurgence of sorts thanks to Limmy watching episodes of it on his stream. Even though I’ve never seen an episode of it outside of that context, it was still a pleasant surprise to see it pop up here.
So lovely to see you back on the Tube Kim. Or have I misunderstood everything about you quitting and having a last live stream a few years ago? Anyway, always an appreciated joy to see a new video from you 🙂👍

I'd like to see a video of odd Speccy games based on American TV shows. As a yank who's more familiar with the NES and such, the grungy, at-home coding of the Spectrum always appealed to me. There's plenty of strange American TV games such as Miami Vice, Airwolf, The Transformers and Knight Rider, to name a few. (Saturday Morning Cartoon games for the Speccy and C64 could also make a good video)
Going to be frank, as an ignorant American this is my favorite type of video. Just a half hour of a voice I like telling me about video games I have no knowledge of. It's like heaven.
Love thinking about finished but unreleased games for the ZX Spectrum so I can say the phrase 'Speccy Lost Media', there's just something fun about that
Minder is up there as one of my all time favourite games on the Speccy. My sister and I used to play this for hours as kids. It took us a long, long time to work the game out though.
Yep, and it was a lot more convincing than the "3-2-1" version, even going so far as to replicate that pattern of red dots that you'd see briefly with a genuine crash / reset of the Speccy. Certainly made my heart freeze the first time I loaded the game. Possibly one of the first games to troll players like that. Good jest, though - respect to Brian Bloodaxe :)
I know of two Atari 800 games that had a fake reset to BASIC. One was the game "Prisoner 2" based on the Patrick McGoohan show. That game assigns you a random three number code at the beginning of the game which represents your reason for resigning the spy agency. Throughout the game you are interrogated for the reason of your resignation in multiple ways and if you ever type that three-digit code, you lose the game. At one point, the game replicates the times on the show where #6 thinks he has escaped the Island but winds up finding out it's a trick. It does this by faking a syntax error in the game code at a certain line of code that happens to be the same as the resignation code you're never supposed to type. If you try to list that line of BASIC code to look at the error, you lose the game. The other game was called "Abuse," and it was like a text adventure game with no plot, just a text parser that would throw insults at you and understand your replies, making insulting retorts to whatever you say. At one point, the game fakes an error and return to BASIC. You can try typing various commands. The one I remember is that if you typed "LIST" it would reply with something like "1) You're ugly, 2) You're stupid, 3) You're gullible..."
I would love to see a Don Priestley special he's my favourite coder ever. Funny thing about Benny Hill when I do my Speccy livestreams the guys in the US absolutely love watching me play it. It always gets requested. Fantastic video by the way 🤜💥🤛
Alternative Software also did a game based on 'Allo 'Allo using, I believe, the same game engine as Dalek Attack. And while both games showed admirable research had been done into the source material (lots of continuity references etc), both games also shared in common that they were absolute rubbish. On reflection, given some of the shows here they did licence from, it is actually pretty surprising that The Bill was never adapted to videogames in the microcomputer era. Very popular series, much beloved, and the potential for cops n' robbers gameplay would seem obvious.
I consider myself one of the biggest Benny Hill fans and my childhood was split between watching his show and playing on my ZX Spectrum, but I did not know there was a Benny Hill game. How did I miss that. 😢
One day I hope someone summons the energy to do a huge video on 'competitions' because it seems like every time a game has a competition behind it, it never worked out.
I've played Dalek Attack on DOS a little, but yeah, there are design *issues* with that game. The first level after the flying section starts with you dead center in the screen surrounded by enemies firing at you, it's possible to lose a life before doing anything! You can get better weapons in this version (and play as one of three doctors, the second, fourth, or seventh) but it's still usually a good idea to run from the enemies rather than fight them, which is at least accurate to the show in some ways. Also the default keyboard controls on the Dos version are very strange and you can't rebind them, though the assumption was you had a joystick.
The nearest I got to a Doc Who game on the speccy is doctor what a few years earlier. By the time the Who game came out I think I was using a Atari ST. Was always suprised that there were almost no Doc who games out there the license must have been a pain to get.
24:14 I'm spanish and I can say: 1 2 3 Responda Otra vez the game was even worse in spite of participation of Paco Suarez (of Bugaboo the Flea's fame). It wasn't very successful, the market for the speccy was small in Spain those days (1984)
Oh well, I suppose I’m in the minority of people who actually really like DALEK ATTACK !... I can remember being a disappointed child when it wasn’t released for the Amstrad CPC-464 (even though it was advertised for that system) Doesn’t matter what version it is, I’ll always have a soft-spot for it. (Also, come on Google etc..., it’s about time we got a Dalek emoji !)
Orpheus did some games on MSX. Boulder dash was a nice conversion and Elidon was a good game that would probably have sold better if the main character was not a fairy
Thank you Kim for another nostalgic Speccy video! That's what I want at Christmas, to feel like a kid again! Anyway, I was the kind of child who let his love of a licensed game overtake his common sense. I didn't care if the reviews were bad, I loved the show of film, so I'm buying it! Christ, I purposely bought Back to the Future, a game that can literally be finished in ten minutes! Also, to use the horrible internet expression, "I was today years old..." All the times I played and loved playing Minder, trying to sell the most ridiculous items which people thought were euphemisms for condoms 🤣 and I never realised you could get Terry to protect you! Maybe I'll get an emulator and try again...
Enjoyed that view of... should i say, games I did not play on my Spectrum. I'm glad, thanks, you saved me. Even though you played through it fast, i think your in for a copyright strike on that Benny Hill music. 😉

Oddly enough, accurate to how Sylvester McCoy's Doctor gets killed off canonically.

The nearest I got to a Doc Who game on the speccy is doctor what a few years earlier. By the time the Who game came out I think I was using a Atari ST. Was always suprised that there were almost no Doc who games out there the license must have been a pain to get.
I think John Nathan Turner would have bent over backwards to get a Dr Who game licensed, that would have been right up his street.

Didn't see minder get a mention, I absolutely loved the minder game.
Supergran, one of ten top intro tunes!
Cant believe there's no nsfw warning for the topless calendar in the minder game lmao
That archers game is basically a really old version of make my video. All it needs now is some marky Mark

24:14 I'm spanish and I can say: 1 2 3 Responda Otra vez the game was even worse in spite of participation of Paco Suarez (of Bugaboo the Flea's fame). It wasn't very successful, the market for the speccy was small in Spain those days (1984)

Candleshoe! Nah, it was much better back then. More festive and more family orientated.
Oh well, I suppose I’m in the minority of people who actually really like DALEK ATTACK !...
I can remember being a disappointed child when it wasn’t released for the Amstrad CPC-464 (even though it was advertised for that system)
Doesn’t matter what version it is, I’ll always have a soft-spot for it.
