  • Super Easy Crochet Stretchy Foundation Chain or starting chain for projects such as sweaters and scarves. I thought there must be an easier way to create a stretchy crochet foundation chain that doesn't require a lot of effort. I researched extensively and couldn't find anything easy. It occurred to me that when I knit, I discovered many years ago that when I double twist the loop it makes it stretchy. I thought this should also work for crochet, as well. It seems no one else has thought of this simple technique. Most important is that it works!

      Yes, you can watch how to join the the first round here, plus 3 other crochet tips.
      ruclips.net/video/5SnExZVehFI/видео.html
      I never just make a chain then join to the first chain. I always work the first row, then join to first st with a SS. I find this much easier as the first row is always flat and easy to join. Working the chain then joining usually makes the chain twist and curl and then you have to be careful to untwist the chain before joining. When you are ready to weave in the tail, follow the stitch formation by pulling the tail through under the 2 top loops of the next stitch then back through the center of the top of the previous st. This will create a invisible stitch. Hope that helps!

    This is really great. Thanks!
    I found it a bit hard to keep track of where to do R2……
    So to do this, I went through the entire chain and put each correct stitch onto a very thin DPN. Then, you can see that all the stitches a correct. It’s then a breeze to do R2.

      The " technique " is really just that the twist adds a tiny bit more to the length of the st. When casting on the usual way, the stitch tends to tighten up with the resulting tight line. With this method, the tiny bit of extra length allows for the stretch. Simple but it works!

    This seems like a great idea but I’m wondering what effect it has on the gauge of a project, because it seems like it is doubling the length of the chain (you’re skipping over the line made in between each chain), could you clarify..

    • @MeadowvaleStudio
      @MeadowvaleStudio  3 года назад

      Hi Hannah. It does not make any difference to the gauge of your work as the foundation chain settles into place once the first row or round is worked. Unless, of course, if you use a very large hook or work your stitches very loose, then switch to a smaller hook, then it will become too loose. Sticking with the same size hook will create a good stretchy foundation chain.

    • @MeadowvaleStudio
      @MeadowvaleStudio  Год назад +1

      Sorry Linda! I did not see your comment. I always work a 2nd row then join to create the circle. This makes it really easy to join. So work the foundation chain, CH 1. Turn, work to end of row then SS to the first st of the 2nd row. Take a look at my video ruclips.net/video/5SnExZVehFI/видео.html

    How many rows do you have to do before it stops twisting? I've done 5 or 6 rows and its still curling around it's self length wise pretty bad.

    • @MeadowvaleStudio
      @MeadowvaleStudio  Год назад

      Hi Kori, it should not twist at all with most yarns such as Red Heart Super Saver or Bernat Handicrafter Cotton yarn but will if using a rayon or a yarn that has very little stretch. Or if you are crocheting very tight. Try using a different yarn or a larger size hook. I have been using this technique for a few years now and never have a problem with twisting except once when I used a non-stretchy yarn. Hope that helps!

    I just dont seem to get any stretch when I try this? Im left handed. Im trying to follow this mirrored but the chain has no real stretch. I just cant figure out why.

    • @MeadowvaleStudio
      @MeadowvaleStudio  4 года назад +2

      Hi Erin! Sorry you are having trouble. I tried it left handed and if you change the direction of the twist before every chain, it seems to work better. So instead of pulling the loop on the hook towards you, then down and back, try pulling the loop away from you, then down and up. I tried it a few times and it works. Just make sure when you work your first row that you are working into the loop just behind the horizontal loops. Let me know if this helps.

    • @MeadowvaleStudio

      Hi Fanny! Yes, you can. Just work your st, any st, then twist the yarn, then work your next st. Just remember to always twist the yarn in the same direction. Hope that helps!
