    Skip Away was a Legit Champion during his Prime who could have competed with Some of the Great Horses of this Sport in my opinion...His tactical Speed and brute force and power bounding through the stretch of his races were Top Level...Owners had to put up 480,000 to enter him in the 1997 Classic and that was a very smart and confident investment...Blew the doors off the Field...Skip Away was the real deal and will always be in my memories of Champions of this Sport...Beautiful looking horse also

      @YouDontKnow-that Год назад +1

      I would agree. Many horses....didn't hold their top for as long as others, so it is held against them. But during their top form. Skip Away was as good as horse in the past 40 years when he was at his best. I put Rachel Alexandra in this category at least as far as fillies go. During her best, I'd say she was better than Zenyatta at her best.

      @@joechrow8341 They'd destroy many fields, yes. We tend to look at that era as a "better horse racing era" --and I wholeheartedly agree. The 70s was the golden era. The 80s were great. I MIGHT even put the 90s ahead of the 1980s. Problem now, is that horses are raced to be bred, instead of bred to be raced. So with that, we look at the horses now as "not as good". The reason why, is that they don't get "embedded" in our minds, because the best horses now race about 6-9 races and are then retired. I know your post is 3 years old as of now, but the one horse from "now" (who was also raced to be bred) is/was Flightline. Based on many accounts from experts, he is as good as Secretariat. Also...look at Spectacular Bid's race record. 30: 26-2-1 . Cigar as good as he was....wasn't close to that. No one was. The last horse that I have great respect for the owners....was California Chrome. They raced him. They didn't coddle him. He raced vs the best there was, and more often than not...he won. We need more owners like that.

    Bailey did not turn Cigar loose early enough. Cost Cigar the win. Cigar was also carrying 5 more pounds than Skip away here. Plus Cigar was old now and had possibly lost a step or two, although the 5 pounds and Baileys mistake mainly were the difference in this one.

    Skip Away and Cigar were Both still Great During this Race during their Careers but they both were not at their "Highest Level" as they used to be...Still feel Prime vs Prime Skip Away would have Held off Cigar in Stretch...Cigar had that Legendary 16 to 17 Race Win Streak but Skip Away was JUST as Good as Cigar Prime to Prime...Skip Away would have had the Pace edge like he had in this Race

    • @charlesdavis7523

      Handicap races require that horses carry an assigned weight. Cigar win 16 races in a row. He was assigned the high weight it wouldn't have mattered who ride him. He would have been required to carry 130 lbs

      @Ved Valmyr Beaten twice on a Curchill Downs wet strip that his hooves floated over and never grabbed. Pat Day on his knees begging Shug to still be allowed to ride Easy. Three Grade I route wins over older horses (first time in over 90 years). Fastest 3yo mile ever.
      I think not, fanboi. Take the homer glasses from over your eyes and realize that the 8 length drubbing Easy gave SS in the Belmont, was a truer measure of the difference between the two horses than was a mere nose, neck or head margin, in the end. Same thing with Moan O'War devotees, as great as that horse was. His owner Sam Riddle DUCKED Exterminator TWICE.
