I mean, expiration dates indicate end of peak freshness, not end of safe edibility. They're also often bumped up to earlier estimates so the production companies that sell those foods can avoid lawsuits/complaints if any individual products happen to go stale/bad earlier than expected. Salome made the right choice.
Edit: Oh, whoops, nevermind, got expiry date and best by date mixed up. Still, eating food on the exact day of expiry is usually fairly safe, unless it's something that goes bad in mere hours outside of proper storage like lactose products.
That's some dangerous stuff that you're saying there. A "Best By" date is very different from a "Sell By" or "Expires On" date. Expiration dates are very much there to indicate approximately when a food is expected to be no longer safe to eat. It is based on average estimations, so, isn't always as accurate as people would like. Best by dates are what indicate freshness fall off, and are generally not an indication of safe edibility.
And that's why some things say "Better by" instead of "Best Before".
@@man0warable No, not really. The best by date is no hard rule dictating when your food will go bad and if you store your food as intented it can often last days or weeks past the date without issue.
What it means is that the manufacturer guarantees it wont go bad *before* that date. The fact that people who dont understand this will simply throw it away and buy new is coincidentally a lot of extra money, meaning that they have no incentive to clarify that most foods are still safe after its expiration date.
You dont even need to look at it either, if the food looks fine and smells fine and tastes fine then it is fine.

That means there are strict requirements placed on manufacturers regarding these labels that must be followed as a matter of law. They aren't just putting them there for your convenience. They are putting them there because they have to. Yes, under the right conditions, you can preserve food for a while after the expiration date. However, consider that these dates are being determined under what is believed to be the most likely conditions that foods are being stored under. They are not being made with ideal conditions in mind. For most people, expiration dates serve as a good enough indication of safety.
