    My 2 Cents: Oberheim TEO-5
    Being a huge fan of the Oberheim sound, especially the SEM filter, I was quite curious to check out the TEO-5. And I wasn’t disappointed. The TEO-5 certainly delivers that classic, warm, and broad Oberheim sound but overall a bit more modern/HiFi compared to the OB-6. I still like the OB-6 a bit better, but if it hadn’t been in my studio yet, I likely would have chosen the TEO-5 instead due to the lower price and, equally important for me, the way more flexible modulation matrix.
    Speaking of which, the mod matrix is well thought-out, easily accessible, and offers lots of modulation sources and targets. You can even use delay time, which is great for Karplus-Strong experiments. The filter and oscillators sound lovely and, in combination with the envelopes, deliver that classy Oberheim vibe. With FM and two different ways to oversaturate the signal (analog and digital), you also enter aggressive terrains that aren’t possible with the OB-6 (and even less with the OB-X8).
    Maybe some of you are deciding between getting a TEO-5 or the UB-Xa. The UB-Xa is not bad at all, especially if voice count or bitimbrality is an important factor for you. But when it comes to that untamed Oberheim sound, in my opinion, the TEO-5 wipes the floor with Behringer’s iteration. However, to be fair, both follow slightly different Oberheim sound approaches, and the UB-Xa is not trying to replicate the SEM-based Oberheims.
    TL;DR: The TEO-5 is a fantastic synth with a flexible sound that certainly carries the Oberheim heritage within. In that price range, it may be one of the best poly analogs currently available.

      It's worth noting that a 2nd hand ob6 desktop prices are nearly equivalent to the TEO5
      that said I too prefer more modulation having previously owned an obie desktop.
      Cmon sequential there are many of us who'd love such a synth as a desktop - same as take 5.

      @@kaiwetronic It's actually not based on the SEM filter the SEM and TEO-5 use. And the UB-Xa sounds quite different compared with the TEO-5 which I like a lot better. But that's a matter of taste, after all.

    It's crazy the percentage of patches you make that I like. You've got a voice dude. You did an OB6 video a little bit back, so I've got an honest question; which did you prefer after putting them through their paces? Ostensibly they have the same filter, but the TEO5 seems to have a much different character from what I've heard so far.

    • @limbicbits

      The TEO-5 certainly delivers that classic, warm, and broad Oberheim sound but I found it to be overall a bit more modern/HiFi compared to the OB-6. I still like the OB-6 a bit better as it is overall more raw and untamed - or in lack of a better term, it sounds more "retro".
      But if the OB-6 hadn’t been in my studio yet, I likely would have chosen the TEO-5 instead due to the lower price, through-zero-FM, the fantastic overdrive, and, equally important for me, the way more flexible modulation matrix.

      Could the hifi sound you mention be due to the lack of an analogue vca? Isn’t it a digital amp inside both this and the take 5?

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  2 месяца назад +3

      @@BagMan123 To be honest, I don’t know, and I don’t want to spam the internet with my uneducated guesses (which happens way too often in my case, anyhow ;)).
      However, generally speaking, I wouldn’t judge digital components for a certain behavior too quickly. Calibration and settings of analog components can also have a huge impact on the overall sound character.
      Plus, I’ve heard too many great-sounding digital synths and/or digital components and too many not-so-great analog synths to make such a general statement.

      @@limbicbits thanks for the response it’s much appreciated, and I was in no way knocking the fact it may not have a vca instead a digital amp also I didn’t think i was making any type of statement I thought I was posing the question if you thought perhaps that may be why your getting a super high fidelity sound from it, your guess is as good as mine
      It certainly doesn’t seem a bad piece of kit especially at that price point thankfully I have two sem style filters in modular the studio electronics one is 👌
      Again thanks for the interaction and please excuse me if I came across all mr know it all as that couldn’t b further from the truth I know nothing and my ignorance is bliss BLISS I tell thee

Anyway, thanks for the great video!

    Brilliant presets and demo as always! By the way, I already have an Ob6 and I’m really hesitating between the TEO 5 or the Take 5. Also I have a Sub37 and a Matriarch… which one would fit the best (with the OB6) and not be « redondant » from your point of view?

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks! As you already have the OB-6, I'd say Take 5 as it would add some Prophet-vibes to your setup. But as you already have a lot of analog synths, my recommendation would be to rather add an FM synth or other digital synthesis method. That would add a much different color palette to your setup

    • @limbicbits
      @limbicbits  3 месяца назад +2

      Hard to tell. Both deliver great pads but if I had to choose, I'd likely go for the TEO-5 as it has more character in comparison. Peak is more of a jack-of-all-trades which is great but not particularly what I am aiming for in my setup.
      If you want to get modulation madness, Peak with its 4 envelopes and flexible 4 LFOs wins.

    • @swanofnutella4734
      @swanofnutella4734 2 месяца назад +1

      For pads that are really background ambience I'd go peak for the ability to utilize release times for tails instead of drowning everything in reverb. ....But for pads that have more character, I'd go for the Teo. You just have to be more mindful with the voice count, but it's doable. Two takes, panned stereo. I'm guessing it's a (chef's kiss) on the Teo.

    • @LordoftheBadgers
      @LordoftheBadgers Месяц назад +2

      I'm going to say... Get teo (but don't dismiss the 2nd hand take 5 bargains) and later get second hand peak.
      You basically need both.
      Standard answer but as a former ob6 and summit owner I think teo plus peak would leave you not wanting any new synths.
