    A trick when drilling holes (like for the bridge in this case), is to wrap the drill bit in masking tape three or four times around. Do this so the bottom of the tape is a measured distance from the end of the bit. This limits the depth of the hole because when the tape gets down to the surface the bit stops working. So the length of the bit that remains exposed is the max depth of the hole you can drill. Then you can concentrate on holding the drill vertical.

    4:05 You are my type of Luthier! I've seen so many Steampunk builds that have all the bells & whistles, so to speak, but all I can think when I see it is, "It's very cool that you glued a bunch of scrap metal to an instrument, but does it sound any good?" I suppose some people don't care, if they plan on using it as a display piece, but that's a rant for another time.

    When drilling holes, I always measure the depth and wrap a piece of painters tape around the bit just past the needed depth. Especially necessary for those of us with heavy drill hands and mandatory for the drilling on headstocks.

    "The taking a cheap kit guitar and making it great" was an awesome series. I built my first kit guitar from it. Flame maple veneer, binding the whole bit. I got a lesson on everything from that build. I was a great lesson on the basics and I became a decent basic guitar tech form it. The build is not perfect but the imperfections make it special; but it does play and sound well. I still have it and play it. Thanks for all your tutorials.

    Contrary to other comments, I like the fact that you think out loud in your videos. Building guitars is hands on labor; it's very easy to fuck up to a point of no return. I imagine speaking as you're working is a very good way to check yourself before doing something you might regret as well as educating your audience. I've been watching a lot of luthiery videos over the past 3 months and so far your's have been the most informative. I like knowing why you're drawing that line or dot; I want to know why you're twisting the gouge at the end of a cut and how you sharpen your tools. Please don't stop doing what you're doing. If I don't apply any of it, it's still very hypnotic watching your videos.

    As a very new owner of a band saw and scroll saw, I can't wait to see how you get that cut done. My first thought was to use a fretsaw with a spiral cut blade to get round the angles and the band saw for the straight lines but then there is the problem of getting the band saw back into the cut. Maybe use a scroll saw with pinless straight and spiral blades? Just one more problem to keep me awake at night!

    • @Cablexman2k
      @Cablexman2k 6 лет назад

      if that piece in the middle is to be cut out then you could run the band saw between the lines and once you have the 2 smaller pieces it would be easy to make the straight cuts with the waste edge showing. But maybe I missed something.

    I've always found that if the 2 centre strings are bang on scale, and the bridge sits 1.5 degrees from perpendicular to the centreline the intonation is almost there and only needs a little tweak to get it bang on, I even built a jig to lay on the top of the instrument type so that I can put the bridge against it and mark the centres of the post holes, and never had to move any of them. Other 'named' guitars are often slightly out, and I have had to reposition the posts on several of them. Quo at Quo Guitars

    Hey Ben. I just finished a guitar where I staggered the through body string holes similar to the way U’ve done here. Mine r in a V shape w the E strings being the longest and the D and G strings being the shortest. The string tension gets higher as the string angle increases. (As u know) W the D/G being noticeably tighter in comparison to the outer strings.

But for real Kudos on making the kit have the correct scale length as what its trying to mimic. From what I can tell its a pretty well made kit and even has the correct wood. Looks well worth the money. I'd buy one if I could afford it.

  • @woodyh4650

    Fiber optics! I’m going to have to try this. I’m not sure how it would work, but the idea is... I think making a thin and narrow route in the top of the guitar to mimic the wiring would look cool. Then run colored fiber optic cable in those routes. You could use resin to hold the cables and fill the route. And depending on the switching, ie which pickup was engaged, the light would correspond with neck, or bridge, or both. A cable running to the bridge , one to the neck, and one running between them down the center for when they’re both engaged. Fiber optics bend well so you could take whatever route you’d like. 2 mil. Or maybe a touch bigger. Hmmmmm...

    what you need to cut those sharp turnS, is a jig saw. With it, you will be able to make all of those sharp turns with vertually no loss of material. You can actually drill a very small hole in the corner of an angle and cut in any direction with a small blade. Your pieces will fit back together with very little loss of outside dimension. Just an old mans observation,ha,ha.

    Great video, but the part where the holes for the bridge-posts are drilled were a bit weird to me. I would've started with a small 2-3 mm drill-bit to make sure the hole is centered and then drill it wider with a 6.5 mm bit afterwards.

      or, in the rest of the world, a millimeter.. though I have stopped saying 'mill' in recent videos due to this confusion.

      I have a weakness for old tools, so much so that I founded a vintage tool shop just so I could get more.for myself! Check out www.vintagetoolshop.com there are about 4000 tools on there with 50 to 75 more listed daily! Thanks for your support! B
