4-Week Progam to Master Alternate Picking Technique (1st Week)
• 4-Week Program to Mast...
Alternate picking is the toughest technique in guitar playing. To Master Alternate picking I wanted to share with you my practice method that I use for my students and you can improve your Alternate picking technique and speed. These exercises contain inside picking and outside picking exercises that Paul Gilbert uses but we are going to add more exercises every week and you'll see differences and you'll see that your guitar speed is improving. Also about video making I take examples from Bernth I believe he is doing great about video production.
Practice this guitar workout minimum 30 minutes per day and please comment about your improvement daily.
When you make a mistake stop and start from the beginning of the exercise! Yes beginning! :)
Watch out for string changes and play cleanly.
So before starting to practice. Please watch my fundamental lesson videos;

00:18 - Master Alternate Picking Technique Exercises
Day 1 : 80 bpm after trying to get the last bit right
Day 2 : 80 bpm(not clean)
Day 3 : 80 bpm (last part really hard)
Day 4 : 80 bpm (finally getting the last part)
Day 5 : 80 bpm (kinda clean)
Day 6 : 90 bpm clean somehow
Day 10:90 bpm clean
Day 1: 80 control, 90 pretty manageable, 100 if I try hard enough
Day 2: No major changes from day 1
Day 3: No major changes from day 2
Day 4: Became a little bit more consistent with everything, 110 is very hard still
Day 5: Became a little bit more consistent with everything, 110 is very hard still (yeah same thing as day 4, progression on this week is pretty hard)
Day 6: 110 is much better yet not consistent, 110 controlled pretty easily
Day 7: slight improvement with 110
Day 1:120
Day 2: 120
Day 3: 130
Came here after completing week 1 of alternate picking workout.
Day 8: 25/03/2024 - 1:00 PM to 1:50 PM - reached up to 90 bpm (80% control).
Day 9: 26/03/2024 - 6:48 PM to 7:48 PM - reached up to 110 bpm, can stretch up to 120 bpm but not in full control.
Day 10: 27/03/2024 - 6:20 PM to 6:51 PM - can play up to 110 bpm (90% control). 120 and beyond is difficult
Day 11: 28/03/2024 - 9:14 PM to 9:56 PM - can play up to 120 bpm (80% control). 120 and above is difficult, I need to be more relaxed, to achieve higher speeds.
Day 12: 29/03/2024 - 8:13 PM to 9:03 PM - reached 130 bpm for the first time (90%+ control). Could even play 140 bpm (80% control), felt in much control today and was feeling confident throughout the session.
Day 13: 31/03/2024 - 2:03 AM to 3:03 AM - reached up to 120 bpm (90% control), 130 bpm 80% control.
Day 14: 31/03/2024 - 4:12 PM to 4:43 PM - same as yesterday.
Will start week 3 from tomorrow.
20/5/2024: 10:52 PM to 10:59 PM up to 110 bpm
Day 1: 100bpm 💪🏼
Day 2: 120bmp most of the times with no mistakes
Day 3: 130bpm no 100% clean
Day 7:140bpm, 150bpm not clean
This is a brilliant skill builder. I haven’t had much time to give it a good go but hope to very soon. Love the string skipping in it! Thanks
Thank you! We are going to have more string skipping🤘
Oh this is certainly different that what I was expecting!
Been waiting for this
Let me know about your progress🤘🤘🤘
Continuing the streak
Day 8: 100 bpm, with occasional mistakes
Day 9: 110 bpm, working on slower bpm to train muscle memory
Day 10: 115 bpm, slowly getting used to the string hopping
Day 11: 120 bpm, I can finally keep up with the string hopping but I still make some mistakes 😅
Day 12: 120 bpm, can play to 130 bpm but lots of mistakes...
Day 13: 130 bpm, working through this bpm now
Day 14: 130 bpm, moving on to next week
Good job man! Keep pushing!🤘
Finally 2nd week:
Day 1: 120 bpm
Day 2: 140 bpm ( 130 and 140 needed a repeat to pull off better)
Day 3: 140 Bpm (150 unclean)
Day 4: 150 BPM (In last attempt only so still sucky)
Day 5: 150 Bpm (160 Not clean hoping to do it by tomorrow)
Day 6: Break
Day 7: 150 Bpm (160 unclean)
Day 8: 150 Bpm (good) 160 Bpm can be pushed
On to the third week. Thank you for this series Oz!
Glad to be at your Patreon 🤘🏻
Thanks a lot for your support🙏🙏🙏
I just updated my week 1 progress on the previous video! I have to say, I have never been more excited to practice my speed, and I hope this makes me evolve as much as possible! Thank you so much for making this program free and I'm hyped for the next videos (and maybe for next programs if you are planning to make more for free)! Tons of appreciation
Thank you!
Yes I’ll do more programs like this one. Try your best and let me know🤘
Cingoya bak dilenmiş ayak üstü;)
dont know what that means, dont care either tbh@@BORSMAN48
4:26 110
5:30 130
Thanks, cool exercises! Get well!:)
Than you very much🙏
I’m doing fine🤘
Day 1: 140 bpm
Day:2 140bpm - cleaner
day 3: 150bpm
day 4: 150bpm
day 5: 160 not that clean
Day 6: 160 cleaner
Awesome. I'm still working on week 1 so I think for me this will be an 8 or 12 week program. Thanks again!
Thank you! You are doing the right thing 🤘
I have stuck at 200bpm at week 1 practice, now I start the week 2, wish me luick.
Sounds good🤘🤘🤘
day 1: my right gets exhausted pretty quickly, but ill try to get rid of that, Limit: 160
day 2: same problem but trying to beat it, Limit: 160
Genial muchas gracias
Gracias🤘
Start week 2🤟🤟🤟🎸
Week 2, Day 1: 120bpm clean, 130bpm sloppy but 80% clean, let's get technical~!
Week 2, Day 2: 140bpm clean, 150bpm kinda sloppy, but tomorrow it won't be sloppy
Week 2, Day 3: 140bpm still, but i made the transitions much smoother! 150bpm is playable but not clean enough
Week 2, Day 4: exact same results, this week is definitelly more challenging
Week 2, Day 5: school makes this hard, but 150bpm is finally clean
Week 2, Day 6: 150bpm clean, 160bpm is sloppy thoughh
Week 2, Day 7: 150bpm cleaner, 160bpm still sloppy
I plateau'ed at 160 ish on the W1 exercise like many others here, guess that's kinda the limit for the average beginner/intermediate player, will be giving this one a shot tomorrow. Really appreciate all these vids.
Thank you! Every week you are going to get better!
Awesome🙀🙀
Thank you🙏🙏🤘🤘
Great exercise! Going back to 60bpm after seeing 200+ makes me feel like a feather haha. Very good practice to go back to slower tempos and clean errors up!
Thank you my Padawan🙏
May the force be with you🤘
Only been playing for 6 months but i will start lesson 1 and give it my best shot😊
Why not :) 🤘😀
day 1: 160max
Extraterrestre you are, great pièce of music!!!
Thank you!
I need a lot of work for this one, with the string skipping. Just a tip for other viewers (and is covered in other linked videos) - alternate pick from the wrist only, but move your arm up and down for string skipping. Try to maintain the same angle of attack irrespective of which string you are on. This is the muscle memory to build with slower tempos, I'm still working on it.
Thank you for emphasizing this🤘🤘🤘
Whats more pertinent is the pick width you use as that will affect greatly what you mention. A 1 mm behaves very different than a 0.6 mm pick.
Awesome: I crash at 180, gotta a lot of work to do. Thank you
Thank you!
Keep me updated🤘🤘🤘
Sweet! I’m just a few days into week 1 and already up to 140 bpm after starting at 120
Nice! Keep practicing🤘
Choice of pick width affects picking. If your hands are strong consider a thin pick which will allow the fretting hand to keep up plus teaching the picking hand a lighter touch. I use a 0.6 mm often and 0.88 and the heaviest is 1 mm dunlop nylon.
This advice to use heaviest picks? Maybe if you practice eight hours a day and can remember and play very very long scale passages.
Wowww
Now i found the real guru who will make me pro shredder
Thank you🙏🙏🙏
Let me know about your progress🤘
@@OzzGuitar yes ofcourse🙏
This is awesome!!! Could you make a phrase to train ring finger too?
Make it minor. You can practice from 12-14-15 E string
12-13-15 B
12-14-16 G
do arpeggios using diff intervals and sweep picking.
💙
You are amazing sir...
After a maximum tempo i am getting stuck.
But i am working hard
That’s normal keep practicing🤘
@@OzzGuitar thank you sir..
I will give my best 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Try this: 0.6 mm pick for several min then a 0.88 up to a max of 1 mm.
Pick width affects your speed greatly. A thinner pick also allows the fretting hand to keep up.
@@5zazen hmmm i will do 😇
Day 1: 130bpm
Day 2: 160 bpm however
5th day (started on 19th october) and now I'm on 170 bpm. Not bad, not good 🙂
Day 9 - 180 bpm.
So... 19th November, 1 month everyday playing - 190 bpm. I will not give up! 🙂
After 4 weeks on week 1 finally getting that to 180 BPM am moving onto week 2. I had tried this a couple of times before and found it super tough. Now it doesnt seem so bad.
Week 2, Day 1. 110 bpm clean. 120bpm it falls down when I try and transition beyond the week 1 patterns.
🤘🤘🤘🤘
The last one is always the hadest because of the skipping, so I should play it legato if I am struggeling or start with it and use a metronome ? Your picking is insane and you should stop at 200 bpm to give us some hope.....:) Thanks for this great lesson and de tips. The distrackted me a bit during practice but I will do it again now because I like it. I will put RUclips at 50 % so I can finsh the workout haha.
Thank you🙏
Technique is more important than the speed, don’t rush🤘
thanks for making this free for everyone!
question for you: for the transition from bar 4 to 5 and also other transition, am i supposed to change from inside to outside picking? or is it okay to do 2 downstrokes and continue inside picking?
Thank you!
Keep your alternate picking stable. This exercise will make you practice inside-outside picking + string skipping together.
Let me know about your progress🤘
This was exactly my problem and ive been able to correct it pretty well just by doing week 1 workout for 4 or 5 days now.
@@jebronlames5997 It's great to hear that! I enjoy getting positive feedback like this!
@@OzzGuitar yeah man you told me i wasn't the only person with this problem and now i see someone describe exactly the problem i had. It really does work lol
can u make a video explaining a training program for beginners and intermediates, based on all of your own videos? ( including all the techniques :P )
Thank you for your suggestion! Let me think about it🤘
First thing: Try diff width picks 0.6, 0.73, 0.88 up to 1 mm. Hold pick on side of index finger and thumb tip all other fingers on picking hand are same like a "c" and base of hand rests on guitar bridge. Make each note you play sound correctly(dont rush).
My experience 1987 right handed guitar. 2005 left handed guitar.
End of week 2 I've actually been working on it almost 3 weeks 30-60 min a day. I can hit every note accurately at 160bpm after warmed up. However I still nick the B and A strings that im supposed to skip around 30% of the time.. Even at bpms well below 50 Ill still nick them 15-20% of the time. Wrong notes bleeding through has always been an issue for me. I don't think ill be where I want to be at the end of the 4 weeks but I will leave monthly updates for a year, and If these exercises don't help me nothing can and im selling my guitar. Wish me luck
First, you have to fix your problems with slow tempos. If you can't play with 60 bpm perfectly there is no logic in jumping to 70bpm. Practice time is not important, you can practice for 10 years this exercises but if you practice wrong you won't improve your skills. So the efficiency is the most important thing so you have to practice cleanly.
I advice you to watch this video too;
ruclips.net/video/hXzq_ozLn1Q/видео.html
@@OzzGuitar
I can play 60 bpm perfectly, but only 8 or 9 times out of 10. I can play 160 bpm perfectly but only 7 or 8 times out of 10. Seriously you're doing God's work. I hang on every word you say. Im not giving up so easy. I hope your finger gets better 🙏
@ozzguitar when you say stop and start again if you make a mistake, do you mean from the beginning of the whole exercise i.e. lowest BPM or just the beginning of the current BPM?
Lowest BPM✌️
@@OzzGuitar thx. I’ve been doing Week 1 for a few weeks now and reaching between 180-200, although difficult to get the practice in every day. I just learnt Week 2 today - presume it’s ok to start on Week 2 before reaching 280 on Week 1, since Week 2 has Week 1’s pattern in it anyway, and to be honest I think it will be several weeks before I can come close to 280!
💣
🤘🫶
Day 1: 60 (still learning the pattern)
I noticed my left hand was having trouble reaching the notes on the low E string, is there a reason for this?
Day 2: 70 (I don't want to go faster since I keep hitting the wrong strings by mistake, makes me rage but I can tell this is going to improve my accuracy)
Day 3: 70
Day 4: 70
Day 5: 70
The fingering hand’s thumb position usually is the problem✌️Try to lower your thumb on the back of the neck.
This is awesome, 150 today.
Can u do something like this for legato? I suppose i could just play it with legato also...hmmm
Thanks for the advice🤘
Thank you for making a good video.
I have a limit of 160 bpm in week 1 video
I wonder if I should play bpm280 in week1 after move on to week2 video?
Thank you🙏
You don’t have to play 280 bpm. Just practice one week the first video. Than you can start practicind second week exersices.
The focus is technique, not the speed🤘
@@OzzGuitar Thank you. I'm looking forward to me in 4 weeks after
@@Abienddo Keep me updated🤘🏻
Question, how are you holding the pick, is it a pointed pick or more of a rounded tip, and are you keeping all your fingers pressed together
Pointed or rounded will change 10-20 bpm so focus on your technique. I advise pressed to my students but in a relaxed way to use their arm more.
@@OzzGuitar thank you
I practice first video for one week, but I plateau at 140bpm. Should I keep practicing first video or start practicing this video?
Every week 1 video🤘 siSo yes this video
Still on week one. Working on it but never passing 150-160 without slanting. Should I aim to exercise week 1 until I reach 200bpm or I can continue with week 2?
Metronome is not important if you practice one week you can jump to the second week🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
try diff width picks. This will affect pick slant. Some players hands, like mine, are too strong for heavy picks. I played two decades with a heavy pick 1.5-1.6 mm. Total frustration. I use mediums now 0.6, 0.88 up to 1 mm max. This heavy picks advice is too stiff.
day 1 - 150
day 2 - 170
day 3 - 180
day 4 - 180
day 5 - 180
day 6 - 180
this is starting to worry
🤘🤘🤘
Day 1 of second week: From 180 bpm I slowed down to 130😅. Super difficult playing cleanly with strings skipping. What's the goal for this week Ozz?
Welcome to the real world. It’s just 2nd week😁
Day 2: still 130 BPM. I have still difficulties with strings skipping. That's a hell of exercise...
@@Lorenzo-cr1cw You don’t wanna see the 3rd week :)
@@OzzGuitar OMG
Day 3: this time, I could reach sometimes 140 BPM. The problem is that everytime I arrived at that speed, my muscles are really tense and stiff... and the grip on my pick is not solid
Isn't this the same as Week one?
Nahh, more variation. Added more to the run plus a lot more string skipping
Now there are string skipping exercises this week✌️
i don"t know how to count them
week2 :
(I will shred I will shred I will shred I will shred I will shred0
day1: 110bpm
You wil!!!
day2: 130 pretty clean, stopped worrying if I see a big jump in bpm and just started focusing with the end goal of playing fast. Watching multiple videos on speed picking to make sure I get my pick, arm nd hand position correct.
I will shred, I will shred, I will shred, I will shred, I will shred, I will shred, I will shred, I will shred.
day3: 120bpm
day 4: 120 again 130 kinda sloppy feel like I'm going backwards a bit.
day 5: 120 clean 130 sloop again. I must be doing something wrong.
🎉🤌🤘🤘
🙏🙏🙏🙏
LOrdyyyyyyy
🤘😀
If your second finger is coming out more on the picking hand that tells you something about tension. Ideally all four fingers are equal at speed likely trying to overcome string resistance due to pick stiffness likely with a thinner pick this wont happen as the delay of the pick bending will force the picking hand to use less force and more speed to overcome string resistance especially when going from string to string. Using thinner picks is rewarding as it will enhance muscle memory of the fretting hand and will lessen frustration as you can slam the strings much harder with the picking hand yet the flex of the pick will guide the picking hand to accuracy. I spent two decades wasted time on 1.5 mm picks. There is a reason why Van Halen liked thinner licks nicer feel and bright sounds.
An additional drill to enhance the motor system is to flip the guitar over and pick and fret with opposite hands. This will provide immediate training and feedback to the motor system which will support your regular practice as little as five minutes will be humbling and will reward the current skills achieved in regular practice(i practice left handed guitar on my left strat in mornings and right strat in evenings, but this drill can be done on a single guitar).
Day 1: barely 130 bpm...
Do I have to be able to do week one at 170 BPM before I try this one? Thanks.
Practice first video 1 week than jump to next one…
Thanks
