Not only does this move relieve tension in the hand and reposition the pandeiro, it also adds a fluidity to the sound of the instrument, especially the platenelas, which can sound too staccato over the period of a song. To me, it's kind of his trademark. It's nice to see the technique being shared to help people improve their playing and sound.
I think is important to learn this technique to add more sounds to your tool box and in case you're using someone else's pandeiro, but when it comes to grip nothing beats hockey tape.
Technique wise is nice. However, i have severe sweat problem, it doesnt really solve the problem and made my pandeiro fall many times since i need to throw everytime
