  • This stag beetle is unique for the size of its mandibles. The males can have mandibles, that are longer than the body. And the subspecies finae has a shimmering bronze metallic shine. No wonder it is a favorit of beetle breeders around the world.

Hi Daniel! I bought some Beetles in glass and they've got silver on them.
The Rhinoceros beetle has silver on its face.
Female stag beetle has silver on the underside near the back legs and on it's mandibles.
And the male stag beetle has a little bit of silver near the front legs.
If you know why or how the silver is there I would like to find out.

Hi @Percival, I collect beetles in acrylic and 'silvering' is a common problem. If you learn how to put the beetles in acrylic yourself, you'll have the best chance of getting a beetle without silvering. Silvering is actually a small gap between where the acrylic originally hardened around the beetle's carapace--and where the carapace has shrunk to. Silvering occurs when beetles aren't dried out completely. If they are set in acrylic, then they fluids continue to decay/cause collapse of the carapace. Unfortunately, even if you dry them out properly, the process of shipping from various climates/temperatures can cause small contraction/expansion of acrylic which will again cause silvering. If you learn the process yourself and keep temps fairly consistent, specimens can go many years before showing silvering. For me, I have learned to live with imperfection and created a display which backlights the beetles and hides silvering somewhat. Silvering is a bummer though!
