Brother do you want chess lessons? I'm not great, but currently a coach at my local chess club and am teaching after school chess programs. If you want to start beating Poppit1 hit me up.
I'm an indie game developer who just recreated chess as a side project last week (what are the chances lol). This video is tempting me to do something else with that project...

As a game designer, I can only say I am amazed at how you are able to blend different games together to create something so chaotic and yet so fun. Bravo indeed, Zack, top notch idea and video!
"I've recently started playing chess" me: *suddenly realizes how much character development this must have taken from how much he made fun of Poppt1 chess videos on underdogs a year ago*
this ... was surprisingly fun to follow along ... this could actually be some fun gimmick game that'll hold some peoples attention for a month or two and then the next thing might come along, but i'd love to give this a shot
Honestly, this made me miss our actual Pokémon chess, Pokémon TFG/Duel. For those who don't remember, you basically had these spinning Pokémon figures that moved across a board to reach a goal on the other side. A game could totally turn around due to RNG so this Pokémon Chess was spot on!
When Jackson rolled that 1 and missed his attack and yelled "what is this game?!" I laughed out loud. Genius idea. You need to trademark this game asap! 😆
Heard about this on the podcast, and I’ve been hyped ever since. I don’t know how nobody has come up with this idea before, because the strategy of both games work super well together!
@Little Z, You absolutely need to send in your games to GothamChess to get them analyzed, that would be absolutely hilarious, I would watch the hell out of that video. Excellent video by the way, super entertaining and really high effort. I loved it!
@@zapatocryz5866 You know Gotham is a content creator first now and a Chess player second... it's not guaranteed but I could see Gotham making a video talking about it if he found out about it
Actually really cool to hear that Jackson is so good at chess. I thought we weren't gonna get any good chess content but cogger pulled it out of the bag.
With all the talk we've heard about Jordan and Chess, Jackson winding up as the actual 'Chess Master' was a surprising, yet understandable twist in The Underdogs' lore.
This is a really amazing idea. I would love to see more of your "game-modding" ideas like this! As a lover of game design myself, this was especially interesting. I think the "Critical Hit" mechanic could work, but it would be better with an 8-sided or 10-sided die. The ~16% (or 1-in-6) chance of either critical hitting or missing is probably a bit too often. I wonder what the optimal (or one of the optimal) 'teams'/loadouts would be for this game.
As an aspiring game designer, even a 1% chance to miss would still be an awful mechanic. it is simply too punishing in many scenarios. it's basically like tripping in brawl, but in a turn based game where the opponent doesn't even need to react quickly to punish. crits are less toxic and unfair but imo just feel unnecessary, because super effectives do the exact same thing. the game would be better overall without these mechanics at all, as the former punishes tighter, more tactical play and encourage players to always just retreat instead of counterattacking, and the latter was clearly just added as a counterbalance.
I'm ambivalent to Critical Hits, but I do not like Critical Misses/Fails (looking at you, Critical Fumbles in D&D). I would argue that Critical Hits are more interesting in a TTRPG game designed for collaborative storytelling, because of the unpredictable-ness that can add to the narrative. But in a competitive game about decisions... it can just end up being frustrating. Although, Darkest Dungeon would be a lot less scary without Critical Hits. But then again, Darkest Dungeon is a game designed around the player planning for the unpredictability and danger of RNG combat.
I love how Zack cut out the parts where bro was definitely both callin his ass out and lightin his ass up about bein right about that type advantage. I feel like they have these moments a lot irl cuz hopcat just had this “you think you’re always right but I got yo ass for sure” look on his face
I love the classical music in the background. It adds another level to the ridiculousness of the video because it feels like such a serious backdrop for highly modded chess.
The thing is with the die is that there’s an actual mechanic in Pokémon called Damage Rolls. And these rolls are ironically called High and Low Rolls, which makes the whole die rolling thing even more fitting
this actually looks pretty fun without the critical hits and misses. You would probably add the rule that you can never directly take the king, even with an extra move from super effective, and that the king doesn't sacrifice itself on a not very effective capture.
This guy really can even make advertising entertaining. Little Z's sponsored segments alone are better than some people's entire RUclips careers. Also, very neat twist on chess, maybe needs a bit of playtesting and some additional modeling to truly complete the idea, but as a proof of concept I like it.
9:29 Zack should have lost his gogoat because it's not super effective against ice... but he does remember the rule when Poppit does it the next turn hahaha
This is really cool. I feel like the dice rolling could be a defensive option instead. Where the person losing the piece, if they roll a six it's considered a dodge.
The extreme contrast of playing against HopCat and Poppt1 was absolutely hilarious. The idea of this is honestly super cool too! It's not too complex and still a challenge with lots of strategy.
I've been watching his videos since he's been uploading smash 4 content and I honestly think this is one of little z's best videos, and it is very apparent. You can see the time and effort in the production, and it honestly shows how much he has grown as a youtuber. I honestly watch more of his smash content and I have also never played a Pokémon game but this is still one of my favorite videos of his. I just want to say thank you to you Little Z for making something I have never seen or even experienced in to something I can enjoy whenever I want. (Lets get Little Z to 2 million by the end of this year).
As a Pokémon fan, I’d love to play a version of this where both sides either have both their primary and secondary typing, or are chosen as Pokémon that only had one typing to begin with to keep things simple.
I think a really fun rule would be a choice to roll the die - would be mega clutch for a neutral matchup going for a big play or a disadvantage type trying to neutralize the self-destruct(with a 6). If disadvantage gets a 1, they just die and the attacked piece would remain.
Dude, should make it that it starts all baby Pokemon, they have to reach the other side to evolve, and so Charmander needs to move from one end to evolve, and then once more to be a Charizard. So it be just a fire but if they want the be something like a flying time they can switch of that is the second type but only if they reach the other side too. Also should be that a pawn doesn't become any piece when reaching the other side making it more meaningful to lose a piece
Personal picks for pieces if they weren't limited by the little figures you had would be: Kings: nidoking, slowking Queens: nidoqueen, tsareena Bishops: (humanoid/servant) bisharp, lucario, machamp, gardevoir Knights: (horses/lapras) rapidash, lapras, glastrier, spectrier Rooks: (bulky/defensive) forretress, cloyster, stackatacka, ferrothorn Pawns: any first evos These seem to have a pretty good spread of types, you could pretty easily expand the general categories and have more team building options, but because of the categories I feel like it's harder to mistake Pokémon whereas your picks some are quite hard to tell what they should be. I also do really like the rng rules and I might just play chess with a dice now, even scrapping the type matchups and stuff because you need the figures. Perhaps it would be more balanced though if you can't take a king after a crit, or even saying you can't take at all after a crit, you can just move to an empty space. Similarly the king shouldn't die to a miss, it should just not take.
What genius must you be to combine two of games with the most developed metagames in the history of competitive boardgames and competitive videogames into one single complex table. This is gorgeus.
For dual types, I feel like the attacker should choose which type is being used. For example, a graveler can use rock type to supereffective the flying zubat, or use the ground type to hit the poison type (because zubat is only 1 at a time). However, zubat can use either poison or flying against any pokemon it attacks. For example, it deals neutral damage to graveler with flying vs ground. This makes dual types much stronger, but also more vulnerable.
Okay you know what would make this even better though: Do it fps chess style, any time someone tries to take a piece, they do a 1v1 with the two pokemon, winner stays on the board.
