I would love to see a couple of hat videos. Types of hats and what they are called. Hat etiquette. Which style of hat for which season or which occasions.
I'm currently struggling with creating the "right" pillbox hat for my head. I have too big & too small. I've tried oval. I've seen your pillbox videos and read the blog posts. I'll get it right eventually. But I love hats!

I can't believe there's another vintage Banana Republic aficionado out there, but then it is the internet so I should not be surprised. I'm old enough to have ordered the clothes from the catalogs back in the 80's, and I still remember several of the items clearly. Really unique, stylish clothes. Eventually my sewing and drafting skills will be sufficient to reproduce the Serengeti Skirt :)
I’d love to see a vintage capsule wardrobe or holiday packing kind of video to see the different ways you could pair all these essentials together to get a lot of different looks!

Some questions about sewing these essentials: do you tend to line your summer things? The eyelet dress looks lined, but maybe your full slip game is strong? And how about the cotton drill suits: just facings and finished seams, or are the jackets lined?
Really enjoyed this vlog , my you are so talented able to make your own clothes , that's great , loved the white eyelet dress on you , over here on this side of the pond , its known as Broderie Anglaise , it was big even in the mid seventies , when a piece of it was sewn to the inside of a floral circle skirt , giving the illusion of a petticoat hanging down , so pretty and feminine , I had kept a small amount from those days , brand new and crafted dolly peg dolls using the broderie anglaise for her skirt and fabric rose petals for the bodice and silver foil cupcake cases as fairy wings , look so pretty , give them away as presents also recently my friend gave me some Brod/anglaise from old bed sheets , probably over 60years old and I am busy adding these to my new apple green sheets and pillowcases to match in with my new floral patchwork bed linen , all handsewn , like to keep my mind off the pain of suffering Polymyalgia Rhuematica , an Autoimmune Disease , that gives me limited mobility and depression , your vlog has made my day and inspired me , thanks so much for sharing , greetings from Belfast

I finally found a white eyelet dress I liked this year, but the smaller size was a bit snug and the next size up a bit loose. Stupid me returned it to the store instead of just taking it to a tailor's! It'll probably take me till next summer to find another dress at a reasonable price now! Kicking myself! D'ah well! I like your essentials list - I like tropical/tiki prints too, and went crazy for Hawaiian shirts (mostly men's) last year! I must have one in almost every colour!

My vintage summer style essential would have to be (apart from hair flowers obvs) a cotton, short sleeved shirt dress. Easily teamed with a lightweight cardigan for chilly evenings & paired with a wicker bag. Love an A line skirt too! You look fab as ever doll.
How about maybe doing a 'packing for a vacation' essentials video? I know us vintage style gals try & pack everything, including the kitchen sink, so tips would be very much welcome as to how to slim down that bulging suitcase!!! Xx
Thank you Jo! I am a super efficient packer these days because I plan my outfits down to the earring for each day as whenever I travel I want to take outfit photos for my blog. I plan my itinerary, and then I plan my outfits based on looking good with the backdrops for photos, so I am very blog focused when I travel now! It would be interesting to do it based on different destinations though, as I pack very differently for Mexico or for Paris for example!

This is such a natural request and yet so amusing to me because I personally loath going out and am a total homebody, clubs are my worst nightmare! Also, I have only been on perhaps 2 dates total in my life, but I could use my imagination. It would be a fun challenge for me!

Honey, I am reaching out about the pattern company. Don’t you know, you already have one? As soon as you drafted your first pattern, you had the makings for a business. Suggestion:....take the suite pattern you have already drafted, sell it in two sizes, S,M and L then XL, 1x and 2x, possibly even larger because large women have a hard time finding things. Take your picture for the front envelope, then order them printed as the orders come in. Sign and number them, maybe even considering a limited edition sort of thing. I would be glad to chat with you more about it if you like. Just save number 1 for me, because girl, you will be famous.!

Those big giant hats are called platter hats. ❤️ And smaller versions are called saucer hats. Halo hats sit on the back of your head rather than being tilted, and often have an open crown. I love these essentials lists!

maybe its my current lack of vanity, but last summer (Australia) my most worn garment was a tropical print muu muu! Also I had a go at making my own hair flower clips and also tropical flower sandal decorations for a tiki outfit. It was fun! :D

Thank you Estelle! I will definitely show my scarf collection in a collections management video someday, but I guess I feel like I don't style mine in very unique ways. I just wear them at the neck with my suits mostly, and very occasionally tied on a handbag perhaps. A trick to keep them in place under suits is to tuck the ends/tails of the scarf into the top of your skirt, or at least that's what I do!
TheClosetHistorian thanks I’ll try that. My scarfs seems to move about throughout the day and they don’t stay put in the back of my collar. Do you fold them a specific way to keep them looking nice and neat throughout the day?
I just fold mine in a triangle from edge to edge. Are the scarves that give you trouble silk or polyester? As I always find my polyester ones slip around a bit more and silk has some better "grip" to it. To be fair though, I don't think I have ever worn a suit/scarf outfit more than say, 5 hours or so at a time, just due to the life I lead. Perhaps I would run into more trouble if I had a job where I could dress nicely!
TheClosetHistorian both my silk and polyester seems to move about. My ones made of other fabrics move too. I tried pinning them, but I got a hole in one of my favorite scarves, so I stopped that. I do wear them all day, when I wear them. I’ve thought about maybe putting a rubber band on them, what do you think?
Ugh! I love these looks and so many of these essentials are on my list too! Sadly, I've been looking for a natural wicker bag and a white eyelet dress for years. I'm very particular and haven't found any in my style/size and/or early on, I would favorite the bags on etsy and somebody else would buy them! Lesson learned! At least I have a white one. I snagged it years ago and can't imagine summer without that, my prized hair flowers and at least one or two tropical dresses!
Love your summer advice! I'm also in love with the vintage safari style (or archaeologist chic, depending on the direction you take it in) and I'd love for you to do a separate video on that outlining some key pieces in creating that style. Muted tones, lots of khaki and olive green seem to be key, but I'd love it if you could show off some of your pieces and give us some more adventurer inspiration!

Yearsgoneby boutique has some nice repro suits! Mine is pretty thin, though it's 3 quarter sleeved. But I think you could ask to make the sleeve shorter:)
Ugh I never wear white, I have this bad "habit" of wearing everything I eat 😭 but girl you're making me want to make one!!! I'd say one of my most worn spring/summer essentials is my denim circle skirt! So easy to throw on with a t-shirt or slit neck top, and PERFECT with a sun hat 👌👌👌
When I bought a hat of that style it was labelled as a "plate hat"
But not sure if that's just for Australia or common across English speaking nations.

Love this! For my summer wardrobe, I have a selection of parasols that are very handy for hot summer days at outdoor antique markets, picnics, or festivals. When I lived in SWFL for a couple of years, everyone used them at the faires so I bought one and was hooked. The ones in Chinatown with beautiful birds and cherry blossoms painted on turquoise or emerald green backgrounds are gorgeous and very period appropriate. Do you use parasols at all? Also, I love gingham and have an Old Navy black and white gingham skirt I bought on clearance last year that I lived in, tissue-soft cotton with buttons down the front. It became my go to outfit with a black, white, or colour top. I'm looking forward to wearing it this year, as I'm changing over my seasonal clothing and enjoying this video. I adore your straw hats!
Thank you Jeanie! I do love and have many parasols. I really like using vintage Japanese wagasa umbrellas as parasols, as I find the craftsmanship of them just stunning. I only have 2 real wagasa, but I hope to collect more in the future, possibly in Japan if I ever get to visit!

Iirc, Lucy's Corsetry posted a video some time ago reviewing an app that scales patterns. It might have been corsetry specific, not sure. But it's worth looking into either way :). Sorry I can't invest any capital rn seeing as I'm struggling to fund my own ventures 😅

love! the navy suit you are wearing...i can sew and will copy it:)..looks lovely on you esp with the scarf underneath...did you draft your eyelet dress as well? i have white eyelet but i can only see it as a sundress and so not doing straps like that with my arms this season...i like the bodice of yours...essentials- maryjanes, i can work and dress up in them. used to be hats but since i travel mostly on bike baseball cap (and sometimes a helmet) has taken the place of my lovely summer hats...oh and swap out blacks, greys and purples for navy, greens(cool) cream/ivory and reds...like this kind of video esp when you add in history of styles..tfs:)
Thank you! The white eyelet dress is just a standard (based on a sloper/block) 2 dart bodice with a v neckline and a slightly puffed sleeve really :)
i didn't know about banana republic's past before this video and just looked it up now - kinda tragic to see something so novel and cool turn into something so mainstream and bland...corporations are the worst.....
There is a great book about the early days of the company called Wild Company: The Untold Story of Banana Republic by the founders that was a super interesting and made me REAL sad it is no longer what it was still today. They started by literally going around the world buying up old army surplus and safari-ish gear and reselling it at their stores, then they added their own stuff when they started running out of surplus to buy up. It started very recycle friendly and unique, and now they are just another fast fashion corp, must be a bummer to be one of those founders and see what it is now (except for all the GAP corp cash in the bank from the sale of the company those years ago of course...)

It is indeed the same navy twill jacket I have on in the modeling portion of the video, and sadly I did make the jacket and the pattern I used myself, so I do not have one I can recommend! The white silk around the neck is just a silk scarf :)

How do you keep a huge hat on your head?! I don't know how to wear hats! :(
For the very shallow ones, I imagine she might use hat pins! They were definitely used to keep hats on heads in this kind of era; tuck it through your hat and into your hair.
I do indeed use hat pins. Pin through the hat, pick up a bit of hair, and then back through the hat. I'll be showing this soon in a video dedicated to straw hats!

All of my white flowers are from Alternate Normalilty and are/were part of her normal range. It does seem she is on a hiatus just now, but hopefully she will be back soon!

Thank you! I believe vintage style is for all shapes and sizes, and indeed in the 1940's and 1950's there was not only one shape of body as well. Though in the mid-century there was quite the emphasis on shape-wear, like girdles and even corsetry to attain the era's "ideal" silhouette, I do not believe this is exactly necessary. There are a few articles on a vintage resource I really like called Vintage Dancer covering vintage plus size fashion that may be interesting to check out vintagedancer.com/1940s/1940s-plus-size-fashion-advice/ vintagedancer.com/1950s/1950s-plus-size-fashions/ There are also gorgeous curvy vintage fashion bloggers who have amazing style! I would love a tutorial on how you make and sew the suit pattern - especially the tailoring/fitting part? Also do you ever use commercial patterns?
Has anyone else used a good commercial pattern for a 40s style suit? I have an old Simplicity Vintage costume-y (3688) one which I haven't used but which is a similar style as yours.
Or RH has this one: reconstructinghistory.com/product/rh1403-1942-ladies-suit/ I've never made any of theirs so I don't know.
There luckily isn't much tailoring in a simple cotton suit like this one, I relied more on the stiffness of the cotton twill to give it it's shape. I don't actually know how to do proper suiting tailoring myself, with the padding and extra hand stitching an all that amazingness. Because I draft all of my patterns from a basic block (also called a sloper) that I know fits me, I never have any fitting issues or major fixes to be done, which is why I recommend learning pattern drafting to all intermediate to advanced level sewers as it is such a handy and time saving skill. Sorry I haven't used a commercial pattern in around 10 years or so now so I have none to recommend!
Hi.... I'm wondering if a couple of peep toe pumps can be styled as "vintage" or is there a specific style of sandals ....must shoes be heeled or are flats okay?
Hi Lisa! I think the easiest way to get an idea of what specific styles of shoes were available in the past is to research vintage catalog pages. At minute 8:50 in this video I put in some catalog pages from midcentury Montgotmery Wards catalogs where you can see some ballet flat looking styles and some flat espadrilles and sandals too. Many styles of flat shoes are vintage appropriate :)
Peep toe pumps were very big in the 1940s, but the shape of the heel is what sets them apart most from modern peep toes. Vintage versions often have thicker, sturdier heels than the more tall and thin stilettos of today. I still think you can wear modern peep toes with vintage though, I'm no "accuracy" purist. A good place to learn about vintage style shoes (and everything else) is Vintage Dancer's blog here vintagedancer.com/1940s/10-popular-1940s-shoes-styles/
You so blessed to be able to make your own clothes. If l lived near you I'd pay whatever price for you to make my dresses as they are unique. Just love your look so much. Suits you so much. Love love love ...xx
Thank you! Unfortunately I don't know how to tailor, so for that and several other reasons I never sew for anyone other than myself, though I rarely make time to do that either anymore sadly!
I agree with everyone who's asking about a hat video! I'd like to expand my teeny tiny collection for practical reasons as well, I need a hat on my head when I go out!
My favourite summer essentials are 40s style tea dresses and 60s shift dresses.
I guess I don't think of individual hat styles within my collection as being essentials other than wool berets and big straw hats in general, but I'll be doing a video all about my straw hats soon!

Thank you Parna! I will show how I use hat pins to secure my hats in a video I have coming up about straw hats. Really when it's very windy out though I just don't even try. I worry too much that the wind may damage my hats if they get blown around or taken away!

I'm going through a rough time with vintage.
I cant fit into my favorite dresses from 2 years ago. It's bad because looking back, I was too thin for my height and I was always exhausted. I'm healthy now, and about 10 lbs heavier but its messing with my head. ): I hate repros so I feel stuck.

It sounds frustrating indeed. I sometimes think I would like to get more active, and I would, but I would hate it if all of my clothes suddenly didn't fit and were a bit too big. I would like to congratulate you on getting healthier though! That is not an easy thing, and your health certainly matters more than any dress no matter how beautiful. Real vintage can be hard, I have very few "true" vintage dresses in my wardrobe, most of my things are home sewn. While a lot of reproduction on the market can be too "pin-up" or kitschy, some brands like House of Foxy and Emmy Design Sweden do make more "real" looking reproductions, just pricier ones.
