- Weird History Food is tapping some boxed wine history! For over 50 years, boxed wine has seemingly waterfalled endless fountains of booze into the mouths of college kids and concertgoers alike. Some of us may have hazy memories of drinking from the wine bladder, or grabbing a box on the way to a party. Franzia Boxed wine was at the heart of it all, and yet, over the years, many labels jumped into the boxed wine game.... growing he reputation from its party animal past, into a respectable commodiyy. Grab yourself a glass of boxed wine and visually imbibe our latest offering!

Ugh...my parents bought these back in the 80's. And then used the bags for floatation devices for me and my sister at the beach. Which always attracted yellowjackets...
This story rocks!
@@Greenmachine305it probably stings a little, too.
If your parents gave you blown up Franzia bags as swim toys, you might be a redneck! If you hear Jeff Foxworthy tell that joke, he owes you royalties!
My east coast ass thinking yellow jackets will pull your beach pass 😅😂🏂🏂
Thats some real 80s sitcom shit right there 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I wonder how much of Franzia’s sales are from restaurants. I’m a line cook and we tear thru their Chablis for deglazing and building sauces but no one drinks it!
Probably equal to my grandmother in law
Never underestimate cheap wine; it gets the job done, and most wine snobs probably can't tell the difference anyway.
For 30 years, I have been the owner of three wine shops and have developed a deep appreciation for a fine bottle of wine. I possess the ability to discern its nuances, yet I find no fault in enjoying box wine. I use Bota box white wine often. I’ll sip it but mostly cook with it.
There have been blind taste tests where wine snobs didn’t know they were also sampling boxed and you’re right they couldn’t tell!
@@DS-re4vs there have been blind taste tests with wine snobs who can't tell the difference between red and white, too. tasting the difference between boxed and bottled wine i would think to be a pretty high bar if they're the same wine

Three buck Chuck.
Boxes will last anywhere "between four and six weeks", shit they don't last 4-6 days in my house.
On certain days, it don't last 4-6 hours 😅
The bladder always reminds me of a giant "Capri Sun for adults", because it's empty way too soon.
Good one!
The cool thing about it is that it makes for a dandy pillow so you can take a nap when you're done.
@@WilDBeestMF And if after that you fill it half way with water and put it in the freezer, you'll have a nice ice pack 'till next time around.😉
@@swedishchef3895 Heck yeah, plus a weapon when it's time for drunken shenanigans duels.
I work as a cook, and we use franzia a lot for cooking, cause it’s cheap and easier to store than a regular bottle of wine
Sorry to hear that andrewmay - I follow the Chef John (foodwishes) advises - "if you are gonna cook with wine, make sure it is something that you would drink..." I am a child of the 80's (in my teenage years) and I sure as hell won't touch Franzia - or in general - box wine if I know it's in the same building!
@@atlbrysco6198 go touch grass
just chug the bag with the homeless@@atlbrysco6198
@@atlbrysco6198 That advice is mostly meant to deter people from using "cooking wines" that are full of extra salt and sugar and ruin the taste of food and aren't drinkable at all. Cheap but drinkable wines like Franzia are just fine for cooking. I've known cooks that use cheap wines to cook with but serve a better wine at the table, with no complaints. If you don't see the Franzia box you probably wouldn't be able to tell what wine was cooked with.
@@OptimumTaurusYou absolutely cannot tell whether it was $5 or $500+ when it's in a sauce, for example. The cheap wine works well, why waste the good stuff?
My Granddaughter calls it cardboardeux.
I was going to say, a nice boxed white wine could be called a moscardboardo. LOL!
😆🤣 tres funny!
château verde fleur as we call it in Australia if we are pretending to be classy.
Otherwise, it's just a goon bag
Omg 😂
Catchy
Admit it…we all look down on box wine drinkers.
BUT…if we were given a glass of box wine and a glass of 10-year top shelf vintage, we probably couldn’t tell the difference.
I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that most restaurants who sell wine by the glass actually use boxes instead of bottles because it makes for easier storage.
I don't look down on box wine drinkers. If they prefer to save money then that is totally understandable and I applaud their frugality. The reason some people look down on box wine drinkers is because it is often associated with alcoholism, which is bad. There's no problem drinking box wine; the problem is in alcoholism itself. If you only buy pricey wine, you are less likely to be an alcoholic (or else you would go into debt). That's why cheap beers and liquors are also looked down upon: easy alcoholism.
But you are right that most people would not be able to tell the difference anyway. Wine is wine, no matter how "fancy" it looks.
What?
@@nomoretwitterhandles wine is wine? and cheese is cheese? And people are people. Are you drunk right now?
In Europe we can get a lot of the mid level wines in a box.
Several of my favorites from Spain and Germany come in both Bag in Box and bottle.
A lot of restaurants where I live are serving cask wine, which is basically the same principle as box wine. It comes in steel barrels that are hooked to a vacuum sealed tap system kind of like a keg. The quality is outstanding and consistent. They still charge $15 a glass for it though. 😝🫣
I absolutely love the boxed wine backpack, so you can drink on the go. Drunk backpacking, what can go wrong?
Exactly!
Dehydration. Hope you carry some water as well XD

Wine backpack 🎒🍷 leads to rape on both sides 😅
I switched to boxed wine because my husband doesn't drink (just the occasional beer), and I usually only have one glass with dinner, so a bottle would go bad by the time I finished it. My go-to is the Black Box Cabernet.
History in a nutshell: man wanted a drink but there was no drinking allowed at work so he put a bottle of wine in a box so they wouldn't catch him drinking 🎉

And they still won’t allow heroin at work smh

As an Australian, I have definitely drank my share of boxed wine or Goon, and of course played the famous Goon of Fortune.
Do tell: What is “goon of fortune?” I’m in the US and I’ve never heard of it!
@@jewelsgrlyou clip the bag from a boxed wine - or "goon sack" - to another Australian invention the "Hills Hoist", which is a clothesline that rotates (you can see the set up at 6:08).
You then spin the clothesline like you're on Wheel of Fortune and where it stops that's who drinks! Some people try to run and keep pace with a goon but that is a great way to stumble head first into a shed 😂
You forgot goon of fortune is played in the late morning, when U really don't want that hit of warm box wine on a hangover
Haha, I wrote the same.
yeah, well it's the only way to get pissed every friday here without going bankrupt. spirits and our piss weak beers are a complete rort, even if it's probably for the best given aussie predilections towards drinking.
I used to buy Franzia a lot. I preferred the white over the red.....and unlike some of my wine-snob buddies took pride in my love for the cheap stuff.
cheap booze is great still does the job and keeps money in your wallet
Red from a box is not as good. Red hits different.
Same. There's a cheap Dutch beer called MARTENS that comes in an amber plastic bottle that is sold in my country, it's quite good, too. Better than Bud, Corona and Coors.
You know about 2 Buck Chuck?

We call them casks in Australia. It makes guzzling bulk wine sound classier.
Goon
I really like the little boxes, I believe about 500ml. They are great for camping and don't have to worry about breakage as with a glass bottle
Grandma and Grandpa always had a box of wine in the fridge when I was growing up..... I used to peek out the kitchen and when the coast was clear just put my head under the spout and let loose 😂
Winemaking is ridiculously easy. You could start up a gallon of must in a couple of hours, and have drinkable (maybe not the best tasting) wine in about 2 weeks.
Off the shelf juice, sugar and bread yeast will do the trick, lol....
Or you could go buy wine and drink it within the hour.
@@ynotw57 Oh, yeah, completely agree. I typed that comment when he was discussing the "kits" the wineries sold during prohibition, so it made complete sense at the time, lol.
But when I was experimenting (during the lockdown... Hey, it was something to do!), I found you can make some pretty good blueberry or cherry wine and meads that you can't normally find... Or find cheap... With the right yeasts, you can supercharge the ABV up to 16-17%.
So I still do it once in a while, but only for special occasions.
@@brj_han gotcha. good point, it is in the spirit of making wine. :)
I have tried Franzia, Bota Box and Barefoot so far. While I admit that they are not my weekend favorites, I like the price and the convenience for sipping during the week, and and I will keep trying other brands. Thanks for including the image (around 10:33) of the various brands. i had no idea there were so many to choose from.
When I turned 21 I went to a dinner where I was asked to bring wine. I had no idea what I was doing and the wine I chose was apparently terrible. Being a chemist I relied on my local library and I educated myself. One of the books I checked out (before the internet obviously) said in the preface that it was more important to drink wine, any wine, than to only drink great wine. I took that to heart. 32 years later I love expensive wine, 12 dollar grocery wine, and Franzia! The convenience and affordability of Franzia, Black Box, and Bota Box means that you get to drink more wine more often while not breaking the bank. Just be careful that you don't take it too far like I did. Now I abstain, but I will sing the praises of the many boxes that were always welcome alongside my rack of more elegant and expensive choices. Delicious wine across the spectrum of affordability. Enjoy responsibly so you can grow old enjoying the whole time! Cheers everyone, great video!
Every time I've ever drank wine it tasted extremely bad. Like, it's easily one of the worst tasting substances on Earth to me! Only thing worse is hard liquor. So, I decided it wasn't worth the effort to "acquire" the taste for wine.
The pandemic did wonders for boxed wine is the lesson learned here
I think it did wonders for all of alcohol. Uber literally created a company to deliver booze.
We need a history of wine video. I think wine deserves a 20 minute video just like cheese!
I'd be shocked if they haven't done that already!
Those little boxed wines are so useful for cooking. Stuff labeled cooking wine is usually far more bitter and very low quality. It's very amusing to me that the cheap boxed wine cost less per ounce and had a much better flavor. I highly recommend them just for that alone.
Goon of fortune mentioned? Take my up vote.
I was not prepared for what Australian boxed wine was initially called.
Initially? We still call it that...

Despite seeing boxed wine in stores every time I go and seeing it frequently in movies and TV, I have never drank any of it, and no one I've ever met has ever talked about it. I'm sure it tastes vile, however.
Chilean here, wine-producing country. Boxed wine is a favorite for whoever wants lots of decent wine at a lower price than bottled wine. According to experts, some of them are as good as the bottled ones. But the wine is not in a plastic bag inside a box, here the Tretra Pak boxes are used. The largest boxes contain 1 and a half liter, and are not meant to last for weeks - they are meant for parties and to be guzzled fast 😁
ye, wine is something where too many people judge the package rather than what's inside
Welcome back to WHF @Tom Blank, WH/WHF’s best narrator
In Australia It wasn’t long before you could buy a very nice wine in a cask - of course they still had the plonk like Franzia.
Boxed wine reminds me of the tag line from the 70s-80s 7up commercial - "Never had it, never will."
Here in Argentina we have a very big wine and wine-making culture, but I think wine boxes never caught on very much. I think there's only 2 brands left, and the wine itself is in Tetrapack-styled box, but they have always been associated with lower classes, though ironically the boxed wines are a little more expensive that some bottled ones. My late grandfather, who came from Italy, actually preferred boxed wine. There's also the stereotype that some not so classy people mix boxed wine with orange soda (either Fanta or Mirinda) or orange-flavored Tang, Clight or Zuko
In Spain they will sometimes mix Fanta lemon and red wine. It's called tinto de verano. Summer red
IMHO the biggest advantage of a boxed wine is its longevity. If I want a glass of wine and open a bottle I then need to then consume ~4 more glasses of wine over the next few days, whereas a box will last for weeks in the fridge. Plus a box is generally cheaper (by volume) than a similar bottled wine. And yes, boxed wine is not "award wining" but there's a lot of good tasting and very drinkable wine available in boxes.
Boxed wine is awesome!
I regularly drink Bota Box wines and Costco box wines. Perfect for the single wine drinker!
Yes! I was waiting for a Costco comment. I drink both of these also and enjoy them. Sure there are better wines, but when it's just for me...salute 🍷
I used to hang out with this girl who drank like a fish, and all she would buy to get her wine fix was wine in a box. She probably has even purchased this particular brand too. 🍇🍷🍾
Girls like that think that you drinking beer means youre an alcoholic, but not her, shes classy.
That box has gotten me through so many exams, boyfriends, and new years.
Glad to see they mentioned that boxed wine was invented by an Australian because we haven't invented much compared to other countries, but this is a proud contribution! I feel like this should be called the history of Franzia though, because the actual history of boxed wine is basically an afterthought in this poorly disguised advertisement.
You have fun culture and unique wildlife; you all don't need the inventions, you're already cool as shiz! 🙌
We punch above our weight with inventions. Black box flight recorder, WiFi etc etc etc
Actually you're right. I need to lower my cultural cringe :/

I am literally drinking Bota Box wine while watching this video. Box wine can be great!
I’m in Ontario, Canada and everything is pretty strictly controlled by the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) so it’s hard to find cheap wine. Even most of our boxed wine is a little over $40 for 4 litres. But there’s an independent wine store called Magnotta and you can get a 16l box of wine for about $115 depending on your wine preference. I will never be too good to spend that little on wine😂 that’s really about as cheap as it gets here, sales on booze aren’t really a thing beyond a few cents or $1, maybe $2 off the really expensive stuff.
Greenwashing boxed wine as an ecologically friendly alternative to bottled wine, when it's literally sold in a plastic bag that will just end up in the ocean for generations.
This was fascinated! Also I worked for Bronco winery!! But that was a long time ago
Finally, a video for my Mom.
First time I tried Franzia, I got a splitting headache with the first glass. It happened a few more times after that. I don’t have much issue with it now. I still drink only a little. Only place I’ve seen it is at my mom’s. She drinks boxed wine regularly. I still prefer bottled.
I was gonna get a box of franzia tonight but at $20 a box i went with 2 magnums of oak leaf..When i started drinkijng franzia it was $14 a box but now at $20 a box its no longer an affordable wine

I LOVE Franzia Moscato. You can't get boxed moscato in Canada for some reason, though. Which annoys the crap out of me.
Goon as in Flagon which is a bag or container to hold liquid originally 2 imperial pints.
I am not much of a wine person. When I drink I usually prefer Guinness, Harp, Magner's cider, Bailey's, or a good Irish whiskey.
I usually use wine for cooking. I’ll brown a roast for 8 minutes on each side, then remove it and add a few tablespoons of red wine to scour the pot.
Then I’ll add some Worcestershire sauce and use the mixture to sautee onion, bell pepper, mushrooms, and garlic before replacing the roast , covering, and letting it cook on medium heat for an hour.
Okie dokie alkie

In the 1970's from Ripon to Lodi there there more tasting rooms than you could visit in a day or a week-end for that matter. My favorite was Royal Host Wines in Lodi. Living closer to Gallo and always seeing the vineyards as you drove anywhere in the Valley, some people started questioning the 'quality' of the Gallo varieties. Rumor stated that Gallo could produce any type wine from any type grape, just had to switch chemicals. I think the rapid turn over of the wine aging/bottling had a lot to do with it. However, if your in the area around Manteca, Stop in and visit with the folks at Delicato's Winery. Smaller producer, better wine AND I went to school with the family and workers.
Ugh, my mother bought boxes and boxes of this shif every week while I was growing up. She was never without a glass of Franzia and a generic Ultra-Light 100.

I've never seen anyone drink wine from a box here in the UK or in Europe. I'm sure we have them, but they're not prevalent over here. We can get good quality wines at reasonable prices having France next door :)
Franzia has a couple flavors I love but can hardly ever find them because they sell out as soon as the store gets them.
Oh dear God... my Grandmother had herself a few glasses of boxed wine every night. 😂
The funny thing is that boxed wine (or cask wine as it is called here) has almost disappeared.
My understanding of the stereotype is "only alcoholics drink wine by the box." Basically, most (I guess, non luxury) brands offer bottle or box packaging; but since a box is like a half dozen bottles, buying them shows a need for more. My favourite pub serves much of its wines from boxes, and I didn't realize that too could have negative connotations. Weird history indeed
Even if you dont like boxed wine or wine at all like me, its a good option for cooking! Bulk cheap cooking wine without basically being vinegar like actual cooking wine
4-packs are better for cooking. Even boxed wine doesn't last forever. I usually use 1 small bottle and then open a new one next time I need it.
@@marcpeterson1092 i havent seen smaller 4 packs! So thats new to me, I typically only see single large boxed wines, cans or glass bottles but it could be my area

Proud box wine drinker even though everyone makes fun of me for it. It's not that I drink it because I don't know anything about wine, I drink it because I *do* know about wine. There are some top shelf box/cask wines out there that put bottles to shame. You can't compete with the shelf life, price, and lack of problems that come with regular cork and bottle wines. My favorite is Kirkland Pinot Grigio. Just for like a casual daily drink on a hot day, it's wonderful, and it's like $13, which is INSANE. Bottled wine has its place, and I will certainly still splurge on something special, of course. It's funny because I don't even drink Kirkland wine because it's cheap (that's just a bonus) I drink it because it tastes good and it's less wasteful since one box lasts me an entire month and a bottle only stays good for a couple of days. If that's wrong I don't want to be right. 🤷♀️
So you're drinking the wine you like. It's inexpensive. It's environmentally friendly. And it has a longer shelf life so less waste.
I don't see anything wrong here.

I’m single and I rarely have company. If I open a bottle of wine I tend to finish it in an evening, getting drunker than I want to be, and disrupting the pattern of my sleep. If I have a boxed wine I have about half a bottle’s worth in an evening. I think. Sometimes I’m sure it’s more…
Usually I can get a good box for around $20, $16-$18 on sale. Occasionally I try an unfamiliar brand that’s unpleasant, but a $20 box is usually okay quality at least.
