The colour of a guitar makes them sound way better.
It's actually true. If you really like the colour of your guitar, it makes you to play with more joy. So it sounds way better. Also, the nitro finish helps the wood dry and the dry wood sounds better.
Yeah especially if it has tone paint like the Smashing Pumpkins guy uses.
@@drewjohnson4794 billy convinced me to get a white strat
Fiesta Red is the hottest, spiciest. It is my favorite too.
I like that. 😎
I've watched you get so damn good over the last 4 years. You can tell how much you practice technique and improv. Your hands sound strong. I don't know what your goals are but you seem to have the goods now to achieve them all. Just don't put that guitar down. You are knockin' at the door. Soon someone will answer it.
Thank you so much! Really that's made my day :)
I agree 100% with this great comment!
Thank you for going through this Ross. I really like the sound of that guitar and now I have an idea of what to look for when looking at some used Custom Shop Strats (or, maybe a new one if I come into a windfall!) Cheers
I bought a Suhr classic antique a few years ago and I love it. Nothing like playing a high-end, hand crafted guitar. Cheers!👊🏻
Nothing beat a Fiesta red, Strat or Tele is my favorite color. Chris Rea use one of them.
That guitar sounds killer! And it's not bad looking either. I actually love that color. In fact, you're holding my dream Strat in your hands. I'm seriously thrilled for you!
Loved this video man- like this format too!
Your comment about the Telecaster being a desert island guitar stands true for me too, but my main guitar is also a Strat. Go figure!
So awesome!!!
Thanks Tomo! You're the man.
Earlier this year I picked up a Fender CS '62 Tele in faded fiesta red. I've owned several guitars over the years but this is hands down the best one. Plays like a dream. Much like you, I would love to get my hands on a CS Strat. My wife may have something to say about it though lol.
Love Fiesta Red, Mark Knopfler also likes them in red. Very cool that even though it is a 60's you have a 9.5 radius instead of 7.25
I have the exact same Stat as you Ross- a 2017, 1960 spec custom shop Strat in Fiesta Red and yes it’s one of my favorites as well! I bought mine because one of my favorite blues players, Ronnie Earl, has a 1961 Fiesta Red Strat! Play it well Ross!
Absolutely love it. Love the fiesta red with the mint/aged pickguard 🔥
Great video - would love a CS strat.
Great to hear your views on Guitar Guitar in Glasgow. I visit the store any time I'm in Glasgow fantastic selection but what makes it for me is the welcoming attitude of the staff - they are second to none - they could not be more helpful
Keep up the great videos Ross - love your playing!
Nothing beats a start that you have a really good bonding with 🧡
I have a Fender CS 2018 60’ with roasted neck and body, almost the same spec as yours except the radius and color, mine is 12” aged/faded fiesta red.
Awesome video and of course phenomenal playing.
Nice! Thank you :)
I love strats. For a their shortcomings, they are really the greatest guitars made. They got so much character and their pedigree is unparalleled. I build them as a hobby and have two that are so comfortable to play .
Ross, that is one hell of a strat you got there. Just beautiful sounding.
Dude! Your videos are really top notch! And yeah; amazing playing 👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you!
Great video and very informative. That is a lovely strat for sure. I dig the nod to the late Gary Moore. Your playing is inspirational. I also get the need to bond with a guitar. I recently picked up a guitar that I just bonded with and it has become my number one guitar. Thanks.
Thanks! Glad you liked the video
Very nice!! I have a very similar Fiesta Red from years earlier when the Custom Shop Relic 1960s were called Time Machines (I think I got mine in 2007?). So essentially I have the 7.5 radius and the vintage frets. I don't mind that, but I do wish the neck was a little fatter. Overall just a killer sounding Strat. I'm glad to have it. Enjoy yours 👍
I loved your sincere review, mate! No BS talk, quite straightforward! And you deserve it, so enjoy it for years ahead!
Thank you!
When you find your strat it’s magic…. I’ve owned many fenders over the years, picked up an American pro 2 last year off the shelf and strummed it, it hasn’t left my hands since… that 1st cord and I knew I finally found my strat, there were many others hanging in the shop, but this one was mine…. It’s hard to explain until you find yours… They are all slightly different because they are hand made, only a few will speak to any individual… congratulations on finding yours…
I've seen kids in the guitar shop, who play 10 different strats of the same model in various colors. Then narrow it down to the one they love. Then take it up to the counter and ask - Do you have one new in the box?
14:12 I believe it! Your Majesty demo is one of my favorite videos you’ve made 🤘🏽
Beautiful looking guitar indeed, and if you got the connexion that you mentioned then money well spent, nice change in style and interesting to see in detail what a custom shop fender is about, thank you.
Bro! I’m back stateside (Lake Tahoe) after spending a year+ in Glasgow, and GuitarGuitar was MY SPOT! Merchant City Music was cool too. Had my Tele set up at GuitarGuitar and woulda bought an SG from them, but knew I couldn’t take two axes on the flight back home. But great people at GuitarGuitar! It was nice to get a reminder of one of my fav guitar stores. Miss Glasgow! Love your vids!🤘
Nice guitar, and great playing. In your recap of other musos playing that colour, you left out British guitarist of The Shadows, Hank Marvin, who imported the first strat into the UK in 1959. It was the same colour, with a birds-eye maple neck and gold hardware. I have one just like it. Mine’s a “57 Vintage” made in USA model I bought second hand in Australia in 1994 for $A1,500. Mine “barks” when on the bridge pickup. I treasure mine and I’m happy to read you love yours as well. Thanks for the enjoyable video
OUTSTANDING WORK!! And such a beautiful guitar too!!
Beautiful strat,love your playing & review 🎸
0:46 - We happy?.. Ross! We happy?
Hahah
Yeah we happy
I not only have that guitar, I have that T-shirt also. What I lack of course is your skill, do you know where I can purchase that? 😂😂
I ABSOLUTELY love this guitar, considering all the lps I own. I was blew away by this strat.
I really enjoyed the production of the video, keep it up
Glad to hear it Davi, thanks!
Picked up a year old jimmie vaughn white mex strat used under 500. Love the pickups it came with, fenders, did have to do a fret level though.
Great guitar & great playing Ross & excellent informative video!👍🎶
This is exactly what I've always wanted in a Strat besides the color, just not a fiesta red guy. But literally everything else is just amazing, the AAA rosewood fretboard is just amazing it looks like Ebony. the Frets look amazing, the action looks perfect, and the sound is just phenomenol, granted, it's mostly your hands but still, your strat is what I dream of owning, but just a different color
Are you crazy? Red guitars sound the best. lol
Looks like you got yourself a keeper. When you find your holy grail, it's a major obstacle out of the way, and 100% of your time and energy goes into playing it. That's never anything but a good thing. Rock on, bro!
Well said!
@@RossCampbellGuitarist Thanks, I have 3 that I consider to be nearly irreplaceable. All of them are what you might call "rat rods" but they have the mojo. I built all of them myself from parts round-ups and attention to every detail, and now I don't even have to think about them except for string changes, and seasonal setups when the weather changes. There's a Strat, a Tele, and a P90 Les Paul, and between the 3 of them, I've got the full spectrum covered, and I can concentrate on the music instead of worrying about the instrument. It was well worth the expense and the time spent. Now I have fun instead of stress!
Cheers, my friend,
And rock on.
You're a superb player. If you ever get the chance, go to Mississippi and see local musicians play and see where it all started. I live there half the year near Meridian and Blues is really in the air there.
Lovely playing, mate. And what a beautiful guitar!
Thanks Mike!
Great vid. Guitarists asking about pickups all the time is crazy, it is a part of the sound - but only a part. The truth is you play really well! You playing a great guitar makes it sound great - that's because you're playing it, and you know how to set it up, and your signal chain up to get a great tone. I had guessed that the radius was a bit flatter than vintage - that tone and a half bend on the high E string at the end of your C minor funk Quist solo would definitely choke out on my 7.25 Strat! ps - that's a tasty solo...
Thanks so much! I agree and it frustrates me to get so many questions like that because you're right, it's only a part of what makes you sound the way that you do and that goes for every guitar player out there.
@@RossCampbellGuitarist that’s it. If you swapped your CS strat for a squier classic vibe and then you had an hour or so to change the strings and get it dialled in it would sound pretty similar! No offence to your lovely strat - but it’s just the icing on a cake that you spent ages baking! 🎂
agreed...Its the woods used the way its put together.....I spoke to many pickup makers and they themselves say pickups are like 15 % of the sound of the guitar....amp strings wood cable how its recorded the room the action on and on......
Choke out is definitely a problem with my vintage radius guitars as well. It kind of sucks but...
@@soofitnsexy So right. Take a guy like Mark Knophler or Chris Buck, you can tell their playing even if they used a banjo!
yep, i got your course a bunch of years ago now and i would like to think a piece of my money helped you get this. very well deserved and i learnt a bunch of useful stuff from your videos and course (so, thank you)
Thanks for the support! Glad you enjoyed the course :)
I've got a Custom Shop Fiesta Red Strat that's based on a 61 and dude that thing is absolutely phenommmmmenal! The neck is so tiny you just wouldn't even believe it.
Nice touch on the production. Really brought the RUclips guitar game up a few notches.
Thank you!
Enjoyable video. One thing I would have liked to know is how you compare the DiMarzio to the 60s pickups. What do you like and dislike about each? What is it about the 60s pickups that you were missing from the DiMarzio? Describe the sound difference, please.
Nice guitar! I recently went with a Custom Shop Journeyman Relic Postmodern Strat in faded fiesta red. I love the guitar, and I really like the "post-modern" amenities. However, I like the aesthetics of your guitar more than mine. The faded fiesta looks a little to light in color to me, and I would have preferred a bit more relic and a darker fretboard. I wish they made your exact guitar with the postmodern setup.
Squire have brought out this very colour 60s strat as an FSR which is very tempting, I'm a big fan of Gary Moore's fiesta red strat and of course this one, gorgeous, especially with the mint green guard and pickups.
The first time I saw this guitar in your videos it reminded me of Paul David's custom shop strat. Was wondering if it's was custom shop too and now I know it is! Good stuff. Must be good Paul seems to like his too.
You have really nice tone. Maybe you can talk about your signal chain, pedals etc? 😄
Congratulations..Enjoy. I have a K Line Springfield and feel the same about it
Like the color. My first 🎸 is a white American strat. White - cause Jeff Beck and Hendrix.. Looking for a PRS SE Custom 24 next
The day will come that you set up your trem. Its like a new guitar if you do. It took me 26 years to set it up, and I just keep on playing....
[10:10] I turned my Strat into a hardtail by just placing a brass nipple inside the trem cavity in the back. It was very easy to do. I didn't even had to remove the strings. You Just have to find the right size brass nipple at the hardware store: in American inches that's 0.375 diameter by 2.5 length. In metric that's 9.5 mm diameter by 63.5 mm length. I got the brass pipe nipple at Lowes I think, or maybe it was Home Depot. I don't remember exactly because it was many years ago, but for sure one of those two stores.
I had heard that Eric Clapton did it with a roll of quarters, but I think that's a myth because the roll of quarters has a bigger girth than the nipple I used, which fit perfectly.
The length of the brass nipple was perfect too, so I didn't have to cut it either. I just pushed it in there and then I glued a thin strip of plastic in front of it to secure it in case of a jarring vibration that could dislodge it. For the strip of plastic I used one of the plastic guides that come with the CaseLogic CD sleeves. I don't know if they still sell those, but anything with similar dimensions will do. I glued it to the wood wall of the cavity with crazy glue.
Here are a few pictures: photos.app.goo.gl/YcMFK5gPy7PzcSaDA
This simple mod improves the sustain, of course. Hardtails will always have more sustain than trems, all else being equal. It also increases the volume of the notes a little bit, because now there is almost zero dampening. So now you can also get that "bell" tone like you get in a good Telecaster.
You and Paul Davids are my favourite youtube chanells. Seriously, the way you teach, play, down to earth attitude and straight to the point approach make you stand out.
Thanks!
Me too! Both Ross and Paul play red strats! That's a sign red strats play better! 😂
Fenders are very smooth playing, perfect necks. I have a custom Gibson 355 and love it but the Tele standard is the smoothest.
Great Strat and great playing ! Although Custom Shop Fenders -Gilmour /Clapton /Beck etc have a great variety of pickups they also vary in neck type and feel . I’ve tried a few like the Beck one and the Mark Knopfler and the necks just didn’t feel comfortable. Got a 2000 Deluxe and it feels fine but it’s an HSS with noiseless pickups but fancy a SSS Strat-any suggestions ? Cheers and thanks for the video 👍
Absolutely the best colour for a 60s strat Ross. I would spec out a 1960 strat large oval C shape neck fairly low output pickups but definitely fiesta red
Yeah tbh I wouldn't mind a bigger neck but it is what it is!
candy apple red
Congrats!
Nice guitar, Ross. I have almost identical CS 65 except in Dakota Red.
Regarding the hardtail, I had my trem “blocked” by my tech, not irreversible but stable and sounds great. I’ll drop you a pic if you like, to your course Support.
Fender stratocaster tone is timeless, no need to change pick ups. You will always eventually regret it and go back to that classic strat sound, especially neck pick up. And they are certainly the most comfortable and rewarding electric guitar, there just something mysterious about them, almost spiritual. No need to mess with perfection.
i changed the pickups in all my strats. have not regretted it at all. i have fralins vintage hots in one, Klein jazzy cats in another, kinman magnum opus in another, DiMarzio virtual vintage blues in another, David Allen in another, they are all much better than the original pickups. i did not change pickups in my ed o'brian signature, that has Seymour Duncan jb junior in the bridge and a fernandes sustainer in the neck.
@@louiscyfer6944 matter of taste I guess. Genuine alnico have that classic fender tone which is unmistakable.
@@rabbitohsrule121 alnico is just the magnet. all of the ones i mentioned are alnico magnets except the stock pups in the ed o'brian signature.
@@rabbitohsrule121 btw, all my pickups have the classic fender tone, just better and some of them without the noise.
@@louiscyfer6944 you could be right, but sometimes that noise adds character.
Just an awesome guitar in the right hands! 👍 Best to you Ross
Thank you!
Magnificent! Please update on refret details when u do it!
Dude your tone is always so great. Are you still using the HX Stomp as your primary? Thanks
Hi Ross, I have the exact same strat! I'm a massive fiesta red fan. After 15 years of buying, selling and trading guitars I feel like I'm finally done.
Nice!
Beautiful guitar!! You did the right thing!!!!
Love the guitar! And suits you well
You forgot to mention Hank Marvin - first strat imported into the UK around 1959 and in Fiesta red.
I've got some great guitars. The two in my avatar are both mint. An 89 Gibson Les Paul standard and a 78 Hamer Sunburst. Both wonderful guitars. But I wouldn't gig them. I've got many others for that.
What amp and pedals are you playing through in this video (and the SRV video)? amazing tone and tasteful playing.
Awesome video, Ross! Are you using UA amp plugins? I noticed the Apollo Twin on the window ledge. Thanks!!!!
Watched a few of your vids, there excellent but to advanced for me. Going back to Marty music, thanks
Stunning guitar and chops! Nice one bro. I love Guitarguitar Edinburgh.😍👌
Thanks! Yeah also a great shop
What Amp and other bits are you playing into? The tone, and, of course, playing, are beautiful.
A couple of neural DSP plugins. Archetype Tim Henson for the shred stuff and the Cory Wong plugin for the quieter stuff
My telecaster, built by Alan Manship, in Paoli Indiana, was an investment of one thousand dollars. Buying that at 18 years old wasn't easy. It is made of curly maple. The comfort of the neck is the true essence of the guitar. You mentioned Gary Moore. He is a, very captivating, inspiration. Your guitar sounds great! The color contrast, on your guitar, sets it off, into an intriguing and good appearance. 💯
Great video, and a lovely guitar. I see you have an Apollo on your window ledge, are the amps you use in the videos "virtual" and if so, what are you using?
4:23 "yeah, lets get right into it"
You know what , that intro solo is gonna bring you to another level of online guitarist. Its awesome, oldskool in a modern way
Thank you Bill!
Pretty sure the "REL" found throughout the specifications denotes "Relic".
I love your stuff, you're a phenominal player, I like your spirit, I love that Strat, killer tone, I'm a Les Paul guy, but after hearing this I must get one at some point
Thank you!
great guitar I have owned several CS strats,,,what amp and effects did you use here??
I love the sound of this guitar ! Does it have a treble bleed capacity and a tone control for the bridge PU?
I love my Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster’s. They are worth the wait if you have to save up for one.
Ross, you found a keeper there. It sounds amazing as it looks!
Not only do you have to save up for them, but the wait list is like a year at least !?
@@auntjenifer7774 there’s hundreds of new and used ones on Reverb. That’s where I bought both of mine.
Sweet looking guitar that looks great and sounds great!
Amazing😀guitar i own one and sold😀and now i know i want again😀and will buy🙂wish you all the best
Great video, thanks for sharing! I'm a huge fan of Gary Moore myself, and also other fiesta red strat players like Knopfler and Hank Marvin. I'd love to own a fiesta red one in the future but for now I will have to make do with my Fender CS Heavy Relic '62 Strat in vintage white. :)
Thanks! Ooft I'll bet that's a killer guitar
@@RossCampbellGuitarist It is, it is. Luxury problems. :)
@@larsarnelana Hahaha yes indeed
Man, I couldn’t agree more on naming my guitars. I just value and love what it is, no need for personification.
thanks for the shoutout Ross, Glad your still loving that guitar !! Robert@GG Glasgow
Ross, how did you get this amazing high gain tone at the beginning of the video??
Love that tone
Great video ! How did you record the guitar? Can you pls share ? Thanks!
1st E string may be a little flat. I don’t know.
But that’s THE strat sound.
And I like your style. Nice ☮️👍🙏
The guitar is beyond beautiful and your playing is truly tasteful.
That bridge overdriven tone sounds mighty for a single coil, what is your setup?
Thanks! For the shred stuff it was the Archetype Tim Henson plugin from Neural DSP.
Heck of a guitar player, love your playing dude!
Thank you Chris@
Wonderful guitar man. They all look awesome!
Thanks!
@@RossCampbellGuitarist My pleasure!
It fits your perfectly. In a year and half ill have finally saved up enough for my custom shop strat. Sea-foam sparkle
Nice one Jon! That'll be a great day when it comes
That sounds bloody fantastic
Beautiful Strat! 🎸
Thanks!
Ross, how are the frets doing? How much life do they have in it after this time? I am curious, because my CS strat has the same ones!
I upgraded strat with Wudtone CP 50s vibrato bridge (54 mm narrow string spacing) and Highwood saddles. Now guitar has sustain and response like hardtail one! Regarding PUs and 60s cycle hum I did install Ulbrick NRS for silence with no tone loss!!! I have Josephina Ancho Poblano PUs and they sound warm and woody with beautiful clarity - I did put on base plate on bridge PU and it rocks!!! I love my CS strat and inspires me to play it everyday! Cheers!
If it can help mine (master built JC, jescar frets, 2016), had to be refretted in 2020, with stainless steel frets (same size, jescar, pleked, mirror polished) and I’m so happy now! It doesn’t change the sound (had made an experience replacing just 5 frets across the fretboard to make AB comparisons before doing the whole refret and plek) but now bending a note is way easier and sustain is better too. Less string wear I also noticed. BTW it costed extra money to preserve the fretboard relicing)
@@notalkguitarampplug-insrev784 I will do the same when the time comes! Love SS frets on my Suhr Alt t Pro!! Thanks!
I had the frets crowned a couple years ago but now it definitely needs a full on re-fret!
"Cassandra" ha ha ha. PMSL! 🤣🤣🤣
There's a saying, 'You don't choose the guitar, the guitar chooses you.'
Guitar Guitar Glasgow is definitely a great shop. The boys have done well there.
Aye, I cannae picture you as a barman in Jeckle and Hyde's or some other bar. Your way too talented for that. 😎😊
I think I recognise the cute wee Edinburgh street.
So you have a cameraman now, ya wee superstar you. 😉🤣 Hee hee.
I can't believe it's been that long already since I first saw your first video, pal.
You've come a long way. I feel very proud for you. Our country is still producing good talent despite all the shit we put up with from that neighbouring country south of us. 🤨
I'm looking forward to coming home and catching up with you potentially next year.
Beautiful guitar. Great video. Pure honest and raw. No bullshit, as is our culture.
Keep in touch, pal. You're a world class player. 😎
Thanks very much mate! Always appreciate your kind words and yes hopefully we can get a pint whenever you make it over here :)
im glad you put back the original pickups.
Me too
Superb playing!
Thanks :)
Beautiful guitar! I have a 59’ NOS custom shop strat made in 2000. Similarly it’s my number one and it’s increíble! I would like to replace the pickups with 59 strat pickups since the ones that came in it are first gen noiseless but I’ll be damned if they don’t sound good though…
Nice man! I'll bet it plays like a dream
First; you are a fantastic guitar player. Second, about the guitar....when I first saw it in your videos, I thought....hm...not sure I'm wild about an orange strat ( it looks orange in the videos). Now, it's kinda grown on me and I wouldn't mind having one lol......third, when I saw the close ups of the guitar, I thought....."hm, too bad it has some scratches"...lol....didn't realize it was relic'd.....lastly, yeah when you have a custom shop vintage type guitar like that, you gotta leave those original fender pick ups in there. I like me some hot dimarzio's too, but I think you definitely made the right choice putting the original ones back. On Sweetwater website here in the USA, these guitars are going for around $4600 usd....whoa! big bucks. You deserve it, and I hope you enjoy it for many years to come. Keep on with the great videos man, you're a great teacher.
Great production! The start was like a movie
Nice color mine is surf green with maple neck 🤩
