    No, dude. Changing the mix from TrueHD to DTS MA is not a "downgrade". Those formats are just delivery systems for the mix Warner has on file. TrueHD is not "better" than DTS MA. There can be no perceptible difference in audio from the Blu-ray to the UHD. It's the exact same mix and will sound identical to the Blu-ray

    • @JeffRauseo

      I thought it sounded differently

    • @bened22
      @bened22 5 лет назад +1

      Double blind test with even sound levels is the only way to tell if you actually hear a difference. Audio is way too subjective and the ability of the human brain to remember audio is way too limited. Maybe one mix was just louder, that alone can confuse our perception of quality.

    • @JeffRauseo

      Well in my opinion it is. The Dolby TrueHD track was better than this DTS-HD track. So that’s a downgrade. Your opinion may be different.

      @@JeffRauseo Opinions mean nothing in this topic. The fact is both formats are just delivery systems for mixes that have nothing to do with each company. Do some simple volume adjustment and you'll see that they are identical.

    Uncompressed is uncompressed. Shouldn't matter whether DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD or even PCM. The TrueHD track is probably from the original Blu from years ago. Now WB used DTS-HD MA. Not backwards, just different.

  • @2Timothy2.15

    What is the bitrate of the TrueHD and DTS-HD audio tracks? One isn't necessarily better than the other. What matters is the quality of the source. I doubt we'd be able to hear any difference between the two in a blind audio test.

    I’d have to agree about the need for an Atmos or DTS X audio for 4K releases. While some Dolby True HD/DTS HD MA audio, such as the Christopher Nolan films (where he carefully oversaw the audio process) , can sound great on a 4K disk, most seem just ports from the blu ray and lack the oomph of an Atmos/DTS X mix. I don’t have an expensive system. ( £400/$500 Denon receiver with fomerly 5.1 speakers upgraded to 7.1 with upward firing Atmos enabled speakers). But I find that a good uncompressed Atmos/DTSX audio can add hugely to enjoyment of a film.

    So now that 4k has been around and doing well but Blue ray is still popular so will they continue to make all 3 DVD Blue Ray and 4k? It seems like this wouldn't continue to much longer but not everything is available on everything.

      CAPCOM784 I agree, but a lot of people still have DVD players and buy DVDs (as they don’t care enough about video/audio quality), so it makes sense to still sell them.

  • @Alienadin
    @Alienadin 4 года назад

    How is a DTS-HD MA track a downgrade from Dolby TrueHD? Technically, unless they used a different source, that shouldn't make a difference at all. Did you do a fair (equal audio level) sound comparison, or is this simply your subjective opinion?

  • @THEBATMAN28AHH
    @THEBATMAN28AHH 5 лет назад +1

    Hey, quick question. What's the big difference between a 2kDI and a 1080p bluray? Isn't 2k just a little wider?
    Could you do a video on which 4k blu rays you would pass up for a decent 1080p bluray? Thanks.

    • @bened22
      @bened22 5 лет назад

      BluRays are usually mastered in a way that the colors look unnatural, especially on newer HDR displays. So (for example) the 2K DI with 10bit or 12bit colors gets compressed down to 8bit colors. The problem for me is that the colors are often exaggerated and the contrast of the images is artificially stretched so that the image might reveal a lot of details and is bright but the feeling of the original lighting is completely lost. A very good example of this is the balcony scene in the 70s Superman when Louis meets Superman supposedly for the first time. On 4k it's a dark and romantic scene, on BluRay it's bright like a sitcom.

    • @THEBATMAN28AHH
      @THEBATMAN28AHH 5 лет назад +1

      @@bened22 that's a great point.
      I haven't looked it up yet, but based on the fact that Superman was shot on film i can assume it's probably native 4k master which is well worth the purchase. But do you think HDR is enough of a selling point if there's really no improvement in image quality? 2k is technically glorified 1080p anyway right? I would argue a 2k Di just isn't worth the $30 price point when regular blu ray looks just as crisp.

    • @bened22
      @bened22 5 лет назад

      @@THEBATMAN28AHH It really depends on your setup and viewing habit. I watch 4K disks close to the screen so it feels like I'm in the cinema. I can't do that with BluRays because the compression is too strong (artefacts, banding), the colors look too wrong (unnatural) and it's all very flat. In my opinion HDR is worth it everytime. But from a greater distance or with a worse TV the differences begin to even out. To me HDR is the actual selling point, not the resolution. And from up close I have never seen a BluRay that ACTUALLY looked as good as the 4k counterpart.

    • @THEBATMAN28AHH
      @THEBATMAN28AHH 5 лет назад

      @@bened22 from the way i understand compression and all that - 2k Di's stand out from their 1080p counterpart becuase of HDR and low compression method leading to way cleaner images.
      The best example i can think of is "Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince" Blu-Ray. Watching this movie on my 4k has revealed SO many compression artefacts it's not even funny. With some research i found out that Warner Bros. Used a VC-1 compression container around 17mbps, and boy i didn't know Blu Rays could have diagonal lines flying across dark scenes as bad as any DVD.
      The 4k UHD version of "The Half Blood Prince" is only a 2k DI, which probably won't look any more crisp as far as detail, but the h.265 compression method might solve the artefact issues and include HDR. So then with all that in mind it might be a great buy.
      But if a blu ray has been mastered to look it's best, especially with animated or heavy CGI stuff, is the price worth it?

    • @bened22
      @bened22 5 лет назад

      @@THEBATMAN28AHH I maintain that it would be hard to get a BluRay that looks as good as the related 4K UHD. The "mastered for 4K" BluRays by Sony are the closest thing image-quality-wise but some of the colors still look off to me (red and green too bright). In the end there is always a difference but how substantial one perceives it is up to the viewer. I don't want to go back but of course money can be the deciding factor. By the way: If you don't mind a bit of meddling and just want an image that looks "good", the over the top contrast and the exaggerated colors of typically mastered BluRays might even be a good thing. But I prefer something as close as possible to cinema.

    Your lighting has improved. But your key light is a bit too high. A high key light was a characteristic look for Marlene Dietrich. But on everyone else it looks a bit odd. Lower the key and soften the light a bit. Use a bounce card on the other side. Use flags for any glare. And the look of your vids will jump up another couple of notches. But nice to see you're working on it.

  • @SB0780
    @SB0780 5 лет назад +1

    You're looking at close to $100K for the studio to make at Dolby Atmos track for these older films. With the rate these 4K discs are selling, Dolby Atmos is only done for huge titles like the recent Batman 4Ks they're confident will sell. Sony does Atmos for its 4K because they have a stake in these discs - Sony also makes the players.

    I don't think the audio will hurt this release because most people who want 4k will see 4k and go "oh, 4k", and they'll buy it and not notice a damn thing. part of that being that most people don't have the equipment that would allow them to notice a difference.
