I saw this in the drive in theater when it first came out, and on every format since, several times each. I just got this 4k and I must say, nothing “jarring” at all! It’s hauntingly beautiful. Couldn’t help but get it despite the reviews and boy am I glad I did! A major improvement over the bluray in every way imo.
Just a thought, but it would be REALLY nice if they went into the Kubrick Archives and used an alternate cover as the cover for the 4k. It'd give most fans something new they've never seen from the man himself. They're actually really neat and almost change the meaning of the film.
This was even more exciting for us in the UK as this cut of the film hadn’t previously been available here: this 4K disc had several scenes I’d never seen!
Quite a lot! The whole scene with the doctor, Wendy and Danny near the start, plus the scene with the skeletons near the end, and several others… a full list might be available online somewhere.
I watched it last night and was very pleased with it. I love almost every shot in this movie and it was great to see it in 4K. I actually prefer the standard packaging over the steel book so that’s what I picked up.
I'm watching it now. This might be the best 4k disc I have ever seen. Just...wow. The clarity. I own Dr. Sleep on 4k and I dont even think that disc looks nearly this good.
I remember when I first saw that you can could buy the shining in 4K I was so happy. I think they should remaster every Stanley Kubrick film in 4K or at least Clockwork orange and full metal jacket. Stanley is a legend.
I watched the 4K and the scene that was actually most striking to me was actually the opening helicopter shots of the landscape, those looked fantastic in 4K! (though the entire film does, so I also recommend the 4K edition lol)
I believe this movie is one of the first if not “the first” movies with a steady cam. Apparently the inventor of the steady cam had problems with the way Stanley Kubrick wanted to do things. But of course the movie turned out amazing.
Cool! Ima have to check this out! I'm guessing they have the Steadicam guy on because he filmed the Steadicam scenes following the boy as he rode his trike around the hotel, which were among the earliest uses of the technology in films.
This is correct. He talks a lot about Stanley’s process on set and how they agreed and disagreed. The commentary is excellent, and one I will be returning to.
I’m not sure why but the blu ray remaster that comes with this set looks better than the 4K to me. I’ve put each disc in multiple times to cross reference different scenes and each time the blu ray wins out in my eyes. It’s brighter more vibrant and detailed. I’m not sure why this is?
Jeff, could you make a video on your 4K TV settings,to get the perfect picture for 4K? I have a Samsung 58" 4K HDRPro UHD TV and A Philips 4K Dolby Vision Blu Ray player, But I'm not really noticing a difference. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'd love to hop on the 4K train but its not doing it for me.
Obviously Im not Jeff but the settings vary between different model TV's, different content (cable, firestick, DVD, etc.) plus personal preference plays a part. I would suggest doing a search on RUclips or Google to find a video or article on the best settings for your TV model. Then try these settings and adjust accordingly. I have a Vizio P Quantum and I had to adjust some settings from what is recommended for my liking. Some of the settings to me were too dark or faded. Plus, if you have the extra cash, you can always have your TV professionally calibrated.
I work at BB & it actually is probably the TV. Samsung only makes their edge-lit TVs in 58" & they have poor contrast & clarity. If you want Dolby Vision, you'll need to purchase a TV model by a brand like Sony (I have Sony) or LG but the better TV's with Full-Array lighting or direct-lighting.
@@chadbreedlove5457 Your TV model has at least full array & expanded color, his model most likely is probably pretty hardware limited. I have tons of returns on those cheaper Samsungs at odd sizes like the 6 or 7 series because of poor shadow detail & muted color at BB.
If you want the best pic you're TV can provide just set picture mode to Cinema and turn off ALL the extra image processing bs. ESPECIALLY MOTION SMOOTHING
I enjoy the 4K. I actually noticed during the free cam, or helicopter footage, that if you look at the top of the screen when the exterior of the hotel is first shown, you can see the helicopter blades, which I never noticed before.
The new Blu-ray copy is missing the Theatrical Trailer that was on the previous edition, but I'm not sure that should be a reason to keep the older edition. I just watched the 4K disc on with a Sony UBP-X800 player and a Sony 49X900F TV, and it looked beautiful.
Decent channel. You could use more inserts, screen comparisons, etc. It is kind of hard to appreciate a visual medium with no visuals. For example, it would have been really nice to see a picture of the poster you were talking about.
Good advice. Thank you. It’s definitely something I’m trying to do more of. Unfortunately you can get copyright strikes for the images of the actual discs/video samples, but I can definitely do more visuals to help explain things I talk about.
The only, and literally the only 2 thingsI didn't like, is the fact the 4K is overscanned very slightly. It's crystal clear and looks beautiful though. I'd like to have had the option to play either version of the film too, instead of just the longer cut. Apart from this minor things, I loved it ❤️ The Shining is, and has been my favourite SK film for a long, long time. Edit: Although, it is worth mentioning, that the Blu-ray in this release that comes in the case, is from the new 4K master.. it's not the old Blu-ray that we've had since 1921 just slipped into a new case. It is beautiful, too.
That cover looks so good! I want it! For me it seems alot of the older films looks much better on 4K then newer films since everything is digital now so making old movies shot on film look really good, if that makes sense
Wow, I like how you've been able to review these 4K films so early. When I watch your reviews I go and try to find other reviews as well, not finding any. Thanks for the information and keep up the good work. I don't own this film yet. But I will now!
When they scan straight from the negatives, does that mean they have to re-edit the film to be the same? Or are the negatives already cut up into the film we know?
In the old days they would cut the original camera negative to conform to the picture that was edited from printed footage, which got pretty grotty during all that handling and passes through the film editing equipment. So it's the original negative that actually ran through the camera which was used for the transfer to 4K, but it's all put together, so it does not need re-editing. The only exceptions would be the optical effects (like dissolves), which would be second-generation (not the camera negative) because they had to be created in an optical printer. Though, if the original elements still exist, the dissolves could have been re-created digitally from the camera negative, too. Ah, the good old days...
I bought the DVD version and bluray version of The Shining. However, I watched the movie on a multicultural free to air channel on Australian television but it had a two-minute scene that was deleted from the DVD or BD versions. I know every scene in this movie because I am a big Kubrick fan since I first saw the classic 2001 A Space Odyssey film in the 1970s.
It is technically a "4k digital copy," but MoviesAnywhere, VUDU, iTunes, and other linked streaming services don't offer 4k streaming yet, so it will be 1080 until those services are upgraded. When they decide to enable 4k streaming, your digital copy will become a 4k version and you won't have to rebuy it, use a new code, or anything like that. Hope that helps!

I watched it yesterday with my dad, I got it for Christmas also with Jaws 4K, Close Encounters of the Third Kind 4K, and some others. The scene with the woman in the bathroom looks clearer 🤢😂
Something you dont talk about, and for me had a big influence is the fact that the movie had more story to tell than the "original" dick hallorann showed up more you see him talking to the sherrif asking him to contact the family to make sure everything is alright, you see him taking a plane , making a reservation for a snowmobile. Also Danny torrance has more to the Story. For me this was realy a big suprise than this is my alltime favorite movie ♥️
this is one of my favourite movies by Stanley Kubrick and a classic horror movie and great in 4K glad I picked it up 2 years ago now and 2001 a space odyssey by Warner brothers
The steadicam shots in the shining I.e when Danny is riding through the corridors / on his trike / maze scene are seen as revolutionary at the time (Garrett Brown first used it in Halloween). That’s the relevance of this being on the commentary track
Jesus. Garrett Brown used the steadicam on "Bound For Glory", "Rocky" then "The Shining". Halloween used the Panaglide system developed by Panavision. Garrett Brown didn't work on Halloween at all.
Have you seen the Wendy Carlos composer piece yet? I'd love to hear what its about since Carlos is quite reclusive. Is it a new interview or is it from the 80's?
Hi Jeff! Great job on the review! I intend on purchasing this and will do so thru your channel! I was born and raised in Somerville! My dad still does live there! The Davis Sq theatre is a great place for entertainment, contemporary and revival! You’ve got me as a subscriber! Thank you!
Because it was shot on 35mm it technically has a 16:9 aspect ratio, but for some reason they still crop the top and bottom of the frame out so we’re still missin’ some shit
I believe that the stedicam was either invented for the Shining or it was the first commercial use of it after the invention hence his inclusion and contribution to the movie
Glad I saw your review! Definitely going to pass on this one - your specifics fall far short of convincing me to triple-dip at the price they're asking.
What the hell is the thing with that yellowish tint in 4k releases? It was also in Apocalypse now and i didn't really like it... Also in Alien skin tones were towards orange, but it's still my top 3 4k release!
Hi mate after 20 years of buying dvd then blu ray now 4K l have decided to go mostly digital. I buy them of iTunes was just wondering if you would review the digital versions as well, or do a physical vs digital picture test. Your channel is brilliant keep up the good work.
Man, sometimes it really sucks living in Australia. We have such a pathetic amount of 4K titles available to us here it's beyond annoying. The format has been around for about 5 years or so now yet our biggest retailer of movies has 1000's of bluray titles - but only 480 4K titles. 480!! What the ever-lovin' F***! Looking through the Net there are certainly more titles available in the US but the utterly ridiculous postage costs, import duties and extra taxes make buying from the US prohibitive - that $15 4k quickly turns into $50 - $60 and so on. And I agree, they should be releasing the big-name titles, the classic blockbusters and widely loved favourites, like the 6 Star Wars films, Indiana Jones series, Avatar, Titanic...why haven't these films had the treatment yet? Doesn't make sense, yet little-known films and box office flops get a 4K release. And why do they release only parts of a film franchise? only 2 of the 5 Underworld films avail, 2 of 5 Resident Evil films, 1 of the original Alien films.....extremely annoying. I've had it with the way the studios/distributors play these damn games!!
Hi I watch your channel regularly, can you do a review on the regular Bluray version and the 4K version of Alien ( 1979 ) and Aliens ( 1986 ).....I can see the Alien Bluray as the first box on the second row behind you.....:)
Question: is the tennis ball yellow, this time? It was originally yellow, but was a nasty shade of pink in the Blu-Ray (I suspect because of the aging negative)? It could/should have been corrected in the color grading back to its original shade, IMO. BTW, Garret Brown is the inventor of the body mount that allows the camera operator to get that smooth, gliding effect in the moving shots. It's called the Steadicam. Very common, now, but The Shining was only the third film (that I am aware of) to use it. The first was Bound for Glory and the second was Rocky (the climb up the steps at the end). So he was on set almost the whole time and is a great choice for commentary.
@@JeffRauseo We will get BOTH cuts over here in Germany on the Amazon exclusive steelbook (artwork like the Best Buy edition yellow maze). The steelbook will be released on October 10th and is sold out for weeks already. Thank god I pre ordered early enough and I can give you all information as soon as my copy arrived. And yes, JAWS is overdue!
MadonnaRockedGermany Got your copy yet? Is the US cut on the regular Blu-ray or exclusive to the UHD disc? I ordered the standard German 2-disc version, not the steelbook ... And I don’t use 4K. I‘m thinking about returning mine once it arrives and get the steelbook somewhere. 😕
@@jankoegl Hi Jan, Amazon messed it up and informed me on Thursday morning about the delay, but delivery status says it will arrive today (Friday). A friend of mine received his copy already and on BOTH discs 4K AND Blu-ray you will get the US cut, not the shorter version like on the previous Blu-ray release here in Germany. What´s more, the extended parts are dubbed in German, not only subtitles used. I have no idea if they got Joachim Kerzel as the speaker who used to be the German voice of Jack Nicholson for example. What I can also confirm is the fact, that also the regular Blu-ray comes with the NEW TRANSFER! If my copy arrives today, I can answer you all your questions...gerne auch auf Deutsch ;-)
One mistake I made here: the old Blu-ray had a 5.1 Dolby Digital track, and this new DTS-HD MA 5.1 is an audio upgrade!
There was also on the bluray a lpcm 5.1

I watched it yesterday with my dad, I got it for Christmas also with Jaws 4K, Close Encounters of the Third Kind 4K, and some others. The scene with the woman in the bathroom looks clearer 🤢😂
Hi love your reviews, I plan to get The Shining in 4K Steelbook with the yellow background maze.....
Is the included digital copy also 4K?
This 4K release seems to have a different aspect ratio, it show less on the edges...please check out 🤔🤔🤔
Yes, but that’s always been the case. It was 1.78:1 here and on the Blu-ray. I know it’s not the original but it’s the best we’ve had on home media.
Films At Home If you compare the blu ray to this 4K release you will see that these are different aspect ratios 😳
Professor Abronsius it is not. Both are 1.78:1.
Oct 01st looking forward to picking this up along with Gremlins 4K and Zombieland 4K
this is one of my favourite movies by Stanley Kubrick and a classic horror movie and great in 4K glad I picked it up 2 years ago now and 2001 a space odyssey by Warner brothers
jeff look !!........Comparison of The Shining 4K (4K DI) Dolby Vision vs Regular Version
The point of having the steady cam guy commenting is that The Shining made groundbreaking use of steady cam.
The steadicam shots in the shining I.e when Danny is riding through the corridors / on his trike / maze scene are seen as revolutionary at the time (Garrett Brown first used it in Halloween). That’s the relevance of this being on the commentary track
Ben Pascall good to know! Thanks for the info
Jesus. Garrett Brown used the steadicam on "Bound For Glory", "Rocky" then "The Shining". Halloween used the Panaglide system developed by Panavision. Garrett Brown didn't work on Halloween at all.
What does the digital code gives you?
i wish they had leon, kubricks close personal assistant do the commentary, i would have bought it for sure just for that
Is this the full uncut extended version? If not how can I get my hands on that version of the movie besides VHS
Extended version? I know there is a deleted ending never shown but what is extended? I have the 2009 Bluray
Is the bluray on the 4K release remastered too?
Have you seen the Wendy Carlos composer piece yet? I'd love to hear what its about since Carlos is quite reclusive. Is it a new interview or is it from the 80's?
would you guys recommend this version or the best Buy steel book version ?
The VHS version
Would be cool if they packaged it with the documentary Room 237
No, it wouldn't.
cool !!...how did you get that so soon ?
Hi Jeff! Great job on the review! I intend on purchasing this and will do so thru your channel! I was born and raised in Somerville! My dad still does live there! The Davis Sq theatre is a great place for entertainment, contemporary and revival! You’ve got me as a subscriber! Thank you!
Grabbing the steelbook, excited for Tuesday
I'm assuming you are talking about leon vitali. the guy is legend in his own right, see 'filmworker' on netflix.
Does this have the movie in its 4 by 3 ratio I have the dvd from 1999
Doubtful. Why would you want that?
Because it was shot on 35mm it technically has a 16:9 aspect ratio, but for some reason they still crop the top and bottom of the frame out so we’re still missin’ some shit
I believe that the stedicam was either invented for the Shining or it was the first commercial use of it after the invention hence his inclusion and contribution to the movie
Wow Jeff you are the first!
Just bought this from bb store 4K version👍
Earned a new subscribing I really want to know about 4K trying to figure out what will be my first 4K perches
Glad I saw your review! Definitely going to pass on this one - your specifics fall far short of convincing me to triple-dip at the price they're asking.
thanks for your hard work Jeff!
I’ve been following you on Instagram for a while, only just checked out your YourTube. Subscribed!
I'm late to the channel but I love it. Great information and highly educational.
I have the two disc special edition dvd and both disc have art work which is nice.
What the hell is the thing with that yellowish tint in 4k releases? It was also in Apocalypse now and i didn't really like it... Also in Alien skin tones were towards orange, but it's still my top 3 4k release!
Is it just me or does this have scenes not in the blu ray
You’re dope bro..love your reviews..so hooked
Hi mate after 20 years of buying dvd then blu ray now 4K l have decided to go mostly digital. I buy them of iTunes was just wondering if you would review the digital versions as well, or do a physical vs digital picture test. Your channel is brilliant keep up the good work.
Tony Brennan digital just isn’t really my space. I don’t own any digital copies.
Jaws(1975) is one of my favorite movies I'd be happy to pick it up on 4K if they release I'd be happy to pick it up I'll pick it up
Will you pick it up though?
big john I will
About to pre order this one. New subscriber by the way!
Looking forward to this 4K. I note the exterminator film on dvd in the background. Great film from the 80s :)
I preordered the steelbook, can't wait for it 👍
Can’t wait for the steelbook next week
Looking great! Lost weight?
Holy shit native 4k res. I want it! Is this the version with Jim Carrey? lmfao
Yes. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
For the stupid people who are going to say to us ‘No stupid it’s Jack Nicholson’ then no it isn’t 🤣🤣
Hi I watch your channel regularly, can you do a review on the regular Bluray version and the 4K version of Alien ( 1979 ) and Aliens ( 1986 ).....I can see the Alien Bluray as the first box on the second row behind you.....:)
Krishna Prasath I did a review of Alien. It’s on my channel.
Definitely getting this.
Are the two cuts included? Since you have an ‘in’ with Warner, do you know how they’ll treat Europe with our shorter cut?
It’s just the regular 144 min cut. I can ask about Europe
