Great old rifles made during a time of quality by men who cared about their trade pride in excellence! Gone are those days, sorry to say! Thank for all the info, very helpful.
Thanks for posting this. I just found a 550-1 in my father-in-law’s basement. I was looking for information on this rifle, and I found YOU! Thanks Again!!
I inherited my 550-1 from my father. As he told the story, he purchased it from an Ace Hardware store for $12. He was born in '39. It looks like that B ZZ is stamped into the barrel making it from January 1953. Feels like I should put some rounds through it now.
the only rifle with grooved receiver for scope mounting only came in 1954 and that is when it was first invented and installed by Weaver--- mid June of 1954 to be exact I've seen the authorization documents
Awesome video! My dad had the Remington 550-1 and after he got it he took it to a gunsmith to get the firing pin fixed because of "peening" as you called it. I inherited it and being a scrawny high school kid at first it felt a bit heavy coming from a Sheridan pump single shot pellet gun(my first gun). Awesome and economical plinker by the way and a great first gun for a kid. I hope you do a video on it one day! Anyways. I loved seeing you take it down and the comparison. Thanks again. Keep doing what your doing. It's a great thing!
Too cool. Have a YY barrel, so 1952. Top rail is different than the AA you demonstrated with no rail mount groove. I first fired it in the late 50’s with my Dad. It’s still pristine.
My Grandfather gave me his 550-1 (June 1957 mfgr.) in 1976. It has been one of my favorites since day one. I really enjoy shooting shorts and longs, with the shorts being so quiet. I make sure to cycle a couple magazines of shorts at least once a year, as Grandpa suggested.
Those are some beauties. You don't see them in that nice original condition often. I just purchased a 550-1 and it turned out to be very nice as well. Haven't got a chance to shoot it yet but I can just tell that it's gonna be a good one.
Had a few over my 70-years, and still have one on the rack. The ejection port cover is always missing on these guns, and I always thought the two mounting screws had backed and lost the cover. But, I put the covers back on the rifles and found that they cause ejection/feed problems one of every five shots. Apparently the shooters over the years took the covers off and tossed them!
Looks a lot like mine minus the scope. It was built in December of 53 and I'll I've done was replaced the springs and clean her up after shooting and she's as reliable as the the is long. Thanks for the share
I have two of these, one with the same Weaver scope, and one without. I also found the shell deflector for each. I also have two of the 552 BDL's, with the deflectors.
I found one of these that was in the Myaakka river for a few decades. It was so rusted half the diameter of the barrel was gone. The sight dovetails were just visible. The magazine tube did eventually come out and yielded two .22 short rounds. Nice to see one whole.
if you like the older 22s you should try to you a click clack gun. its a stevens 87a they are great guns long barrel that gives it that man size rifle feel. amazing shooting rifle
After watching this video and the takedown of the 550-1 it has a lot of similarities to the 87a! I have an 87a and a 552 speed master both are outstanding semi auto .22’s
If you get a 1/2" drive ratchet. A socket that has a big flat screw driver blade made into it. Put the receiver in a vice. ( Just lightly with padding) That will do the job of loosening that threaded boss that the take down screw going into. Once out. As you said. The screw under it holds the magazine tube and the insert. Once the mag tube is out. The insert will mover back, towards the trigger enough that the floating chamber can be fished out through the ejection port. I completely disassemble my rifle. If you do that. BE WARNED!! You need the read up on how to do so. The sear housing is the large oval screw head. That you see ahead of the trigger. Before you can safely remove that. You have to take the trigger bar out first. If you don't. You risk stripping the threads on the sear housung or in the receiver itself. I did mine and it can be done. No damage what so ever ( threaded everything by hand only! untill I was sure) But it's a pain. I would recommend removing the floating chamber as I described above. Then soaking and blowing out the inside of the receiver with compressed air. Several cycles of that and it should be perfectly clean. The oil it all. Ready to go!
Another guy here who just inherited one from my dad that we shot together when we were young. Needs work as the last time he pulled it out when I was a teen (47 now) it jammed after every shot. Not as clean as your sample but I’m gonna get it refurbished mechanically and a little cosmetically.
I came across this video cuz I was interested in it my neighbor actually gave me one of these guns and the crazy thing is mine is also an AA January of '54 and also in very nice shape he said it was passed down to him by his uncle and he didn't want it I said I'll take it what do you want for it he said nothing he didn't want any money for it but he just gave it to me he's a hell of a neighbor but it's crazy it's also an AA model 550-1 good video
I believe the 550 had a common receiver with some of Remingtons bolt action 22's also. But as with all older guns, parts may be a problem if Gun Parts Corp/ Numrich is out.
Very good rifle, reliable, accurate, strong "Clean design" Congratulations by conditions, y believe in 95% ~97% Hellow from Brasil ( sorry my inglish ! Kkkk)
Mine is still fine. I drilled and tapped a small screw to prevent the end cap of the receiver from unscrewing. Put a 1.5x6 old but very expensive (for it's time, could not afford a Zeiss) Leupold Scope I bought in late 1980. Dont miss a squirrels head
I recently bought one of these in mint condition from a friend who bought it new in 1969 and had never fired it. I'd like to lock the bolt back in order to clean from the breech end, but can't find a way to do that? Can you help? Also, it has a Bushnell 3x-7x .22 Custom scope on which it takes all my strength to move the zoom knob. What can I do to loosen it up a bit?
Occasionally 550-1 parts show up on gun broker, including the deflector. That is the only part missing on DR's gun, but removal was necessary for the scope mount.
Your wrong about the screw holding the barrel in the receiver. The coolest thing about your rifle, is that its one of very very few 22s where the barrel is threaded into the receiver! :) Because if this, If you did a trigger job on this rifle, it will be the most accurate 22 youve ever fired!
My local place I’ve been going to since the mid 1980,s has 6 of these in all around the same conditions, one with a scope for $249 the other 5 are $169. So getting one may be a good idea, however I just got the only Marlin model 60 they had in decent shape for $149. It shoots well with Mini Mags, made in 1982. Great Video, very nice ones you got there, definitely keepers. How many shorts and .22 Lr does it hold? I found one at a good price, she holds 21 shorts and cycles well all 3 types of .22 ammo.
The 550-1 was my first rifle. My father bought it in '54, the year I was born, for jack rabbit hunting in the California desert. He gave it to me when I shot the head off a rattlesnake with it at age 13 on a deer hunting trip. Sadly, it was stolen years later. I'd love to have another. You're lucky to have found one in mint condition DR! She's a beauty.
They make dovetail mounts that work great with the rifle. As for finding them don't be surprised if your search turns up rings for air rifles. Those are perfectly fine. Just don't cheap out on them don't order from wish or some site that looks sketch
I have one of these built in 1957 and given to me by my older brother in 68. More cosmetically challenged than yours but I wouldn't part with it for anything.
Agree on your "fetish", You can NEVER have enough shotguns and 22s. Both are cheap to feed. Watch when you turn over the rifle on it's top when disassembling it. Just recently I was too lazy to put my 22 in the wise.and broke the plastic cap /old brittle/ on the scope. It was also an old Weaver 4X on a Winchester 190./package rifle/ Otherwise nicely kept 550. Thanks for the video.
Oh hell yeah, I can see you floating in space as your tether to the space ship broke. Luckily you brought your trusty Remington 550 with the gigantic trigger guard allowing your astronaut gloved index finger to access the trigger. As you float away you get the idea to fire the rifle in the opposite direction of your motion from your ship. After firing a magazine full of ammo and correcting your trajectory along the way you enter the space ship and have yourself a hot toddy and M&Ms.
I have one just like that, scope and all. I let the kids shoot the heck out of it. It is fussy with ammo. I shoots great with standard velocity CCI ammo, shoots like crap with winchester ammo

Teach gun safety by giving your kid a rifle that has to be loaded and unloaded with the muzzle aimed at the head! That's why I bought my daughter a Marlin 25n which used a removable box magazine (semi-double stack, you might say "one and a half stack" -- rendering rims jamming impossible). It's mine now. She never really used it and decided she wanted money more than the rifle. So, I got to buy it now.
No it can not shoot 22 magnum. The floating chamber does however let the gun fire 22 short, 22 long, and 22 long rifle while still be able 2 cycle all 3 of them.

Grew up hunting with my grandad's guns not that I couldn't have used my father's but he was gone working All of the time God bless grandpas
wonderful examples you have used in the Golden age prior to 1950 what classics!

My first 22 was the 572 Field Master Pump in 1965.. then the 550-1 in 1969.. then the 552 in 1972.. and I still have all three, and a few more..🥃😎👌
Easily the most enjoyable of all 22 rifles great video!
Awesome video of a great classic.

David, been enjoying all your videos. Thanks for the work
I just got one of these today. It cycles .22 standard velocity shorts like a breeze
I had a 550-2 at my dads for several years and when I asked for it he said, oh he sold that but I have a 550-1 you can have instead. What an upgrade!
I found one of these that was in the Myaakka river for a few decades. It was so rusted half the diameter of the barrel was gone. The sight dovetails were just visible. The magazine tube did eventually come out and yielded two .22 short rounds. Nice to see one whole.

Lovely firearm. Thank you for posting! Grace and Peace 😊
The long barrels on these old 22’s really improve the performance of the little cartridge.
Neat rifle. I've never seen one of those before.

Just acquired a 550-1.
Question, should the bolt lock back?
I have one, and no, it doesn't unfortunately
I recently bought one of these in mint condition from a friend who bought it new in 1969 and had never fired it. I'd like to lock the bolt back in order to clean from the breech end, but can't find a way to do that? Can you help? The frame would have to be machined for the bolt to be locked in, probably not worth it
And you will have to push the bolt handle into the hole that's drilled, tricky conversion indeed.
Take the nob off the receiver, remove the spring assembly, the bolt will hold back, and you do whatever you want
Best to just take the nob off, then the spring assembly, and do whatever you want
I also have a Marlin 60 and the Marlin made Glenfield 60, plus a few other Marlin and Marlin made 22/s.

Ever see a shell deflecter for the 550-1

Yes I got one at a gun show ,check parts at these dealers they carry a lot of old hard too find parts !
They make a remake of the shell deflector. I have the original on mine but there was a website I believe brownells had them
Ermoso fusil son una reliquia tuve la oportunidad de ir de cacería con uno de esos y me encanto

You're missing the shell deflector.
Your wrong about the screw holding the barrel in the receiver. The coolest thing about your rifle, is that its one of very very few 22s where the barrel is threaded into the receiver! :) Because if this, If you did a trigger job on this rifle, it will be the most accurate 22 youve ever fired!
So the 550-1? Or a different rifle
My 550-1 barrel is stamped XJ9, do you know what year that would be? I did not see it on your chart. Thanks
Is it possible to buy something like that?
Oops I meant 552 speedmaster, But I still like the 550 better.
I've got 3 of them , but none are groved for scopes
You have an older 552 - with the 24 inch barrel

Will not accept original stingers. Case of stinger is almost an 1/8 th inch longer than a long rifle. Chamber on gun milled too short for stingers.
