Eastward A Disappointing Indie | Eastward Review (Nintendo Switch)

  • Eastward, another indie game that wants to take after Earthbound or Mother 3. Alas, it was a disappointment. Eastward thankfully isn't all bad. I reviewed Eastward on the Nintendo Switch. It leaves a lot to be desired, only worth continuing for the action adventure play and puzzle solving. If you have a Nintendo Switch backlog, consider putting this near the bottom. I appreciate you watching my review of Eastward.

    I wholeheartedly agree. To say this game even has a plot is a stretch, because plots are driven by cause and effect - things just happen, and most of the time nobody seems to have any reaction, much less any real motivation to drive the plot themselves. Silent protagonists are such a curse upon video games and I hope the medium moves past them. Also as a writer, this is perhaps the most overwritten game I've ever seen. So much talking with so little being said.

    • @ericv00
      @ericv00 5 месяцев назад +4

      There is a stark difference between silent protagonist and non-responsive character. They can and have been done well, but they show their reactions in other ways. The silent protagonist in THIS game, however, did not.

    Seeing a negative review makes me kinda sad, but it contains all valid points, and it seems fair. I think I get so lost in the parts I love, I forget or gloss over any issues.

    • @vaguedreams
      @vaguedreams 8 месяцев назад +5

      It wasn't really negative though. I mean, in the end yeah, it seems like a downer for her, but she's practically gushing about the game for most of it. It happens, it didn't grab her for whatever reason but other than the technical issue, of which she provides a work around, it's not particularly bad.

    As a fellow woman with a frying pan, might I recommend Weird and Unfortunate Things are Happening? It's Earthbound-inspired, but not at all derivative, has great characters, WILD environments, and best of all, it's cheap as free; I picked it up at itch a while ago, and enjoyed it a great deal!

    As much as it sucks, I agree with all the criticisms you had. I saw the trailer a few years back, and I immediately fell in love with the graphics and characters. But after the New Dam City chapter, the game fell off for me.
    There were so many beautiful plot threads that never got fully fleshed out (or got muddled), and that was the whole reason I was playing the game; to have a charming but dark Gravity Falls-esc experience. All the ingredients were there, they just didnt get cooked together correctly.
    With that being said, I think the studio had a deep passion for the game, and you can tell there's a lot of love put into it. Id take Eastward over any modern AAA game, hands-down. Even though it didn't live up to expectations, I'm excited to see what they make next.

    There's a lot to like about this game, but I agree with you about there being missteps that hold it back. I feel like this shows a lot of potential from the devs, even if the story is kind of underbaked.
    Still, with so many tremendous RPGs out there, this missing the mark means it risks being left behind.

    I agree to an extent. Eastward is probably my second favorite indie game right behind Hollow knight. The way the story is told (or not told) I just chock it up to a world inhabited by mystery that is beyond time and comprehension, what little tidbits you grasp of all the grains of sand passing through your fingers leaving nothing but lingering questions but thankful for the experience. also sidenote: I love this game so much I even got the Japanese special edition and the vinyl lol.

      Dude this sounds like a poorly written poem, but besides that this is a cope. Stories can leave you with questions but they have to be earned but if it’s due to poor writing it’s not mysterious it’s bad writing. You can like the game for sure there are good parts but the story isn’t told well at all.

    Compleeeeetely agree with you on this one. The town by town scenarios was weird because they barely put any effort to bridge an overall story until the very end where they act like you should onow whats going on. Way too wordy with no way to speed up dualogue. Gameplay was top notch fun though!

  • @joakkar
    @joakkar 8 месяцев назад +25

    Absolutely agree with this one. Bought this one on steam when it came out and all I could think afterwards was how much I wanted to like it but couldn't. I feel like it may have been better if they actually tried to make the story less mysterious. You basically spend the whole game getting bombarded with questions and ultimately get zero answers even to the most basic parts of the story. Earthbound also has a bunch of unanswered questions but at the very least the main objective in the game always made sense.

  • @NKElyan

    for me the ending killed it. I might have missed a lot of story relevant content. i skipped mostly everything that wasn´t necessary for the main story. And what can i say. At some point it just didn´t make sense anymore. And instead it felt like "if we can´t make this make sense we just ramp up the obscurity and confuse you to a maximum." it was fun... until it wasn´t in the very late game.

    I'm always surprised to hear how common the criticisms of the story are. This is probably my favorite video game, and the story is one of the main reasons! I was really emotionally invested in the story and characters all the way through. It made me cry more than once. I really enjoyed the dialogue, too (even though there is a lot of it lol). I spent a couple days after beating it just thinking through the story, making connections, and unraveling some of the deeper themes. I really got a lot out of this game, and I'm excited to replay it while I wait for the new DLC.
    With that said, I really liked your review. I think it was really thorough and even-handed, and as always, I appreciate your review style. :)

    But as someone that 100% the game, I think the experience is super worth it, with beautiful art, ambience, smooth gameplay, fantastic ost...
    In addition recent updates such as the dialogue skip button, the dlc that just launched today and the teleport feature do make things much more better.
    Either way, I do hope for a sequel.

  • @Im-Arii

    I can agree with kind of everything.
    I wanted to love this game so much, but combat (which never changes and is too easy) and the lack of proper, non-cryptic story was a huge letdown for me. Really struggled finishing it towards the end. It often felt, as if they had to cut some parts, keeping it shorter. Idk. Many parts felt rushed and yes, John being not only silent but almost completely unresponsive is insane. I seriously thought that he might be some kind of robot, sent to protect Sam, or smth. Would have been a better twist.
    The ending is completely ruined by that, too. Sam talks, questions him and he just gets up and waits for the train. Well done John, here's your treat, boy. *sigh*
    I try to look back fondly, though, because you still feel the passion the devs put into it.

    You make a lot of fair points and I respect your opinion. Personally I loved this game very much but yes some of the dialogue was pointless, certain parts of the story felt dragged out and inconclusive but for me it was the music, the layout of the game is downright beautiful, the combat mechanisms were simplistic but for this style of game it offered all it possibly could. The game isn’t perfect but I enjoyed it very much as it was also an emotional experience for me. I give it a 8.5/10

    As someone who loved Eastward, I this is a really good review. even the parts about the story (which I liked).
    It's a strange story and world, and it's told in an atmospheric and hard-to-track way even if it were in, say, a show/movie. And on top of that, they tell it in a game. So it's pretty ambitious, but everything you said about it is true too.
    There were pieces where it felt like I was remembering things from a dream, like just one detail from really making sense. I liked that at the time, but I certainly wouldn't wan't all my stories to be like that

    There is such a thing as an expert reviewer. They are not the same as a typical player who reviews a game. The expert knows for example what things signify objective quality in the class of things they review. Additionally, experts ALWAYS have higher standards. So it’s possible they may not realize what things would be nitpicking to some or even most consumers. I believe these are reasons that critics sometimes say movies I enjoyed are terrible.
    They are looking for different things than I am as a random non-expert. Also, you can’t discount the FACT that OPINIONS will vary. Though this reviewer didn’t like the game overall, they were very generous with the praise they did give to the parts they liked. So if you ask me, it was a very fair review. Calm down people, nobody’s saying the game needs to get banned here….

  • @jackiej6233

    Hard agree; it was the combat for me and the lack of environmental engagement.
    I thought the combat was too rigid (and a bit overly simplistic for something that bothered to incorporate a buff system), and for something that had such a large, beautiful environment with clearly a lot of hard work put into it, there's nowhere near enough engagement WITH that environment. If the game had put a heavier focus on exploration as opposed to dungeons that are just reskins (with, I'd say, two exceptions) and MAYBE a new enemy or two thrown in (some mini-games were nice, but they're gone so quick there's no time to really appreciate them) something would stick out but for such a significant amount of time focused on combat... frankly, it was bland. I admittedly have a few other gripes (mostly having to do characters and overcompensating bonds with those characters when we barely interacted with them after we get our flavor of mission from them because they focus more on introducing more and more quirky members of the cast instead of building on that and fleshing them out, which is ironic given that the game actually has a fair bit of dialogue; the dialogue is just more focused on exposition of the story than fleshing out and/or engaging with those sources of dialogue (that and there isn't really any good incentive to do sidequests because the reward pool is extremely limited to ammo, food, or a heart upgrade).

    I can't help but agree with this review on reflection. I played it on release and enjoyed my time with it due to the lush graphics and fun gameplay but the story left a lot to be desired and I ended up really confused and felt slightly... robbed? I put those thoughts to the back of my head and convinced myself that I really liked it but yes, as you say, it completely lacks substance.

      I completely agree. I came into this game with such excitement, I too was drawn in by the graphics and frankly I did like the gameplay! But I am such a character/story gyal that I was left feeling empty afterwards. Like I did the thing...but didn't have any sort of happiness or feeling in general for the characters.

    Not gonna lie, game's alright. I liked the soundtrack and the comfy vibes the game's pixel art and world did. But I just never got around to finishing it. I guess the rotary moments of going to town to town and finding new characters didn't engage me in. And I'm sorry to hear about the Switch tech issues. I had no clue since I played it on Steam, but got the physical copy on Switch. Might need to trade that for something else now.

    Yeah, I agree, and also for me the game didn't exactly grip me as much so I just thought it was relativley really REALLY dry and boring, with too many empty spaces between story and actual game play, and I always thought it would have been just better as a webseries.

      @PelvicGaming  8 месяцев назад

      Omg this would be an adorable webseries if Jon talked, and well, they had a better story. I actually enjoyed the gameplay, and the visuals but ... everything else..eh

  • @ericv00
    @ericv00 5 месяцев назад +1

    I agree with you completely on the game, but I feel you could have elaborated more on what doesn't work about the story. The silent protagonist isn't just non-responsive, he exercises absolutely no agency until the very very end, and then only to save the girl, which no reasonable person would walk away from, so the act is a bit moot. He is led around like a service animal for pretty much the entire game.
    I also took issue with the tone, which didn't seem to know how to blend bubbly innocent with seedy, sexual, and sadistic. The game is obviously marketed toward a younger audience, and yet, there is a dominatrix with 'excited subjects', mass un-alive-ing, and other weirdly out of place things. I'm fine with this when the writing reflects the maturity of its 'true' audience, when the audience is adult enough to engage with those themes. However, the writing in this title has the complexity of a children's book.
    Ultimately, I think an incredible dev team was the victim of the writer's weird passions. Everything else about the game was on the cusp of greatness. The pixel art, music/sound design, casual-but-thoughtful mechanics.... all very well refined. ...Why has writing gotten SO utterly bad in media everywhere for the past decade or so?

    • @PelvicGaming
      @PelvicGaming  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you for the feedback and you're right with the problems that you mentioned.
      As for writing in media idk if some is just mid or if our expectations are just growing higher. In this case however it felt souless.

      @@PelvicGaming I'm an oldm'n who has revisited older games that I remember fondly in much the way many people have expressed their enjoyment of Eastward here in your comments. I've done this to make sure I wasn't remembering things with rose-tinted glasses from the mind of the child I was when I first played those games. Many don't hold up to my memory, but they almost all still have more compelling writing than what I generally find nowadays. I truly think standards have fallen and the younger people of today simply can't recognize writing that has had greater refining. I am not a professional writer, and yet, I find that my own works are more pleasurable reads than multi-million dollar projects in contemporary media.
      So many people say that the game made them cry, as if that is the mark of good writing. However, anyone can write a sad event in the most simplistic terms and still generate a reaction. Having A reaction is not the same as a deep one. I can show an image of a bodybuilder punching a little girl and it will get a reaction. But building up the characters and bringing them together for that event in a believable and compelling way is proper craft. I wanted Eastward to EARN the emotional payoffs it used, and it just didn't.

    An Earthbound X Zelda like in story x gameplay? I'd love if there were a game that's like the 3d version, taking more gameplay cues from the 3d zeldas Ocarina/Windwaker/Twilight, with earthbound like story in tone. Honestly I think I'm just describing Beyond Good & Evil at this point.

    its not the fact that its missing anything its more about Acknowledging the kind of game your looking at. Eastward is a story driven RPG big enfasis on "story driven" its diolouge broken up by gameplay the gameplay is an afterthought as the dilouge is the main priority for that game so its annoying when i see "theres too much dilouge" or "a good 15 hours needs to be taken off" because that just proves you didn't do any research before purchasing. thats like playing red dead 2 blind and then complain about horses being the only form of transport.

  • @Aaron-mj9ie

    I really liked Eastward, but I felt like it's pacing was inappropriate for the type of game it is. Half the time you're being whisked away at a pace too fast to really appreciate your surroundings to the degree that's implied... Then the other half when you actually wanted to move the story along, you're held back.
