I think big chunky headphones make you a target, but I wear earbuds with ambient mode on so I can be aware of my surroundings. Also in the event that you need to call someone, you can keep your hands free and go to work.

I still wear wired headphones but keep the volume low, and I can use them as a weapon if needed, adapt and adjust. A No. 2 pencil, sharp works well too.

In Krav Maga, we practice attacks from the rear at the first level of training. First we work on doing a quick look behind without tripping (more important than you'd think), then we work on running (far threat), then we work on kicking to the rear and ducking (near threat), then we work on dealing with specific attacks from the rear: shove, bear hug, choke, headlock, etc. We also work on fall breaks, fighting from the ground, and getting up in the presence of an attacker.
The goal is always to get home safely, not to win competitions or look cool. Because we incorporate awareness, avoidance, and escape into our practice, Krav at its most effective means never having to use its fighting techniques.

Never knew K.M also trained for Ground...
      Defending etc...
I was taught.. foot against hip top of thigh.. plus attacking knee,, blocking head by grabbing the back of your head.. it's instinct.. we've been touching our heads since birth...
My Brother trained me after he retired from training for 10 years...
So we combined the Disciplines into a what works.. as you'll also understand...
What works... Where to strike.. we even trained Edge weapons..
After learning. . It's the absolute last resort.. for my life.. knife.

Situational awareness or presense of mind, quick physical reactions or reflexes, mental strength or toughness, composure or self-confidence, resourcefulness, the instinct or the will to fight back and defend yourself, knowing when to fight back or when to just run away as fast as you can, having the foresight to avoid people/places/situations that most likely lead to heated altercations or violent encounters, and your martial arts/fighting/self-defense skills and techniques (if you have any or some) which you have spent long periods of time practicing and training, can drastically increase your chances of successfully defending yourself and surviving potentially violent self-defense encounters. Speaking based on my personal experience as a self-defense practitioner.

This reminds me of a story that my mother told me once. She was recently married and actively helped in the family business. When she was returning home she recognized a car that was parked outside the business location, and it was following her closely. She turned around and drove to the nearest police station, the car drove away when she reached the police station. She found out that the driver of that vehicle was her sister-in-law's boyfriend that she had been dating.
My aunt later broke up with him when she realized that he was a dead beat. Fortunately, they never saw him again.
As a personal example, I have become wary of helping people when they ask for help. It is of because of 4 bad experiences.
    1. They wanted money and gave me a coat. And promised to pay me back but never did.
    2. They wanted free gasoline and I found out later that they were dead beats who always ask strangers for gasoline.
    3. They were drug addicts driving around in a beat up car, whose car constantly needed a jump start. And was missing a catalytic converter.
    4. A desperate man with a car with Florida license plate, so many holes in his story about being a New York. And was darting his eyes in my car looking for something to steal. And he was begging for money for gasoline as his car was running. I politely declined when he offered me jewelery and sped away, as he was weird and gave me an odd feeling. I called the police after that one.
So yes, trust your instincts. Better to be safe than sorry.

Situational awareness, someone is following, change routes to make sure of bogey. After conformation of bogey, call friends setup a trap, discuss a spot to trap follower. Lead follower into trap, make sure bogey never follows again.
Think of others behind you which the bogey is going to follow. Keep them safe, stop the threat in appropriate matters, if needed call the cops. Remove the bogey aka. threat from the society.

With public transport you can enter at one door and leave at the other and do it best at the last moment...
With restaurants and some shops, you could disappear in none-public areas and if you know the shopowner, chances are they'll help you.
Lastly, places with security checks, bouncers, frequented by cops and in some conditions also organised crime (they hate it when thugs cause cops to show up for BS reasons) can be a huge deterrent for anyone following you.

Double back or enter a business rather than just changing your route. There is a decent chance that you could simply be going to nearly the same place as the person you think is following you. Much less likely that they are going to the same place or nearly the same place and then have to double back at the same time as you for something that you forgot.
There have been a number of times when I happen to get behind someone that I end up following down multiple streets to only pull off at the last minute into my own driveway.
