- Newsies, the musical, is surprisingly good - and yes - based on a true story. Not exactly accurate, but safely inaccurate.

Wiki:
Newsies (released as The News Boys in the United Kingdom) is a 1992 American musical drama film produced by Walt Disney Pictures and directed by choreographer Kenny Ortega in his film directing debut. Loosely based on the New York City Newsboys Strike of 1899 and featuring twelve original songs from composers Alan Menken and J.A.C. Redford, it stars Christian Bale, David Moscow, Bill Pullman, Robert Duvall and Ann-Margret.
The film was an initial box office bomb and received negative reviews at the time of its release, but later gained a cult following on home video.[2] It was later adapted into a successful stage adaptation on Broadway that was nominated for eight Tony Awards, winning two.

Actually Jack Kelly is an amalgum of kid blink and a kid named Morris Cohen.
They chose Pulizier because Hearst was done in Citizen Kane and they didn't want to use him.
This musical had me at "18-year-old Christian Bale." But yeah, the historical stuff is interesting too.
P.S. Isn't 'Matewan' a pretty good movie about labor? I haven't seen it in many years, but I remember it being decent. I think Sam Shepard was in it.
Having actually studied the Mingo County War, no it's pretty abominable, and misses some very important things that would explain following events which were much more momentous
I once asked my grandfather when we were watching Newsies many many years ago if him and his buddies ever broke out into perfectly choreographed song and dance ensembles while they were just eating at a restaurant randomly? To which he replied with a simple no that might get your ass kicked.
I LOVE NEWSIES!
I get "King of New York" stuck in my head way too much.
Have always loved this movie.
+Andrea Miller actually only watched for the first time last year, save for when i was a little kid and couldn't remember
The Cynical Historian I was a teen in the early 90s and i liked older movies, especially musicals, so this was one of those movies that really grabbed me. It's like meeting another member of a secret group when you find a fellow fan. Fans of Willow are a rare breed as well. Heh
Andrea Miller willow was a great movie.. loved willow then Newsies came out and my mother rushed us to the movies to see it. My sisters and I fell in love with it. We know every song from the movie, I’m going to go see the musical tonight.. I was kind of bummed that they changed the narrative but it’s a better comparison to what actually happened.
The Broadway version makes some relevant changes. Roosevelt doesn’t really factor in, and both Hearst and Pulitzer are the enemies. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, though, so I can’t remember what else.
I think the movie didn't do so well at the box office because like this video said the movie didn't put accurate history about the Newsboys went on strike. And maybe because many people even until this day don't like musicals in general. But the movie had a cult following when it was release on video. The Broadway musical version did really well.
Thats a bit of a stretch to say it bombed because of inaccuracy. There's a lot those who do well in the box office.
It bombed because the producers had no faith and didn't advertise it correctly. The movie came before the musical and the only reason the musical was mwde was because everyone demanded it and somehad taken the movie and used the dialogue from it and adapted it on stage fortheir use so Disney decided to move it on stage.
3:39 “These fights broke into...” song and dance?!
I never even heard of this film, and I like musicals. As for films about strikes, have you seen Brassed Off? Im guessing yes.
Also I wouldnt expect Disney/Hollywood to glamorize organized labour anytime soon.
haven't seen that one, I'll have to check it out if I can find a copy
The Broadway version (that has now been filmed) is better, mind you, it's not perfect, but better. It's one of my favorite musicals.
The broadway musical was actually produced by Disney.
So this snuddy mug says to me 'you can't see Mr Pulitzer, no one sees mr Pulitzer. Real hoidy toidy ya know the type?'
Great video man! Not a big fan of musicals myself, but definitely an interesting part of history!
+Plainly Difficult Whaaa? Even good old Disney and Rogers/Hammerstein ones?
If I remade it I think they should've had focused on those street battles and turned it into a gritty action movie about kids getting beat up by men with sticks in the street and fighting back, all because of greedy newspaper moguls.
(I've never seen this film, let alone heard of it before your video, but it was very informative I thought. I'll watch it myself someday.)
In a similar vein it might be fun to do Bugsy Malone (1976), which I watched on RUclips several months ago. A musical performed entirely by kids.
Nice job man! We just watched the live stage movie they made and put on Netflix. It was fantastic but great to hear the true story here!
Fun Fact: the jails annexed to the local NYC criminal courts are still called 'the Tombs' by us attorneys.
In the broadway play it does show the compromise. Jack and Pulitzer agree to reduce the price of the paper but allow the newsies to sell back the papers. You should check out the movie of the broadway musical
I absolutely loved this movie as a kid, and somehow had no idea it was based on a true story.
Coming in 2018, a new retelling of a historic play, it's "The Newsgirls"
It's called Annie.
I'd love to see your analysis of "Parade,." a musical based on the real life 1913 Leo Frank trial.
I want a modern version of this, but with guys in their 20s who write Clickbait articles.
Agree with your analysis for the most part. I think musicals CAN be serious and historically rigerous. (Sondheim does a pretty good job with Pacific Overtures and Assasins in my opinion). But the lighter tone of Newsies definitely gives it extra leeway.
I agree, especially when consider even more serious musical depictions of history like Parade(which Sondheim himself was initially asked to write the score for but turned it down, leading to the show's composer[and arguable equal in dense lyric writing, with a more Billy Joel-esque style of composition] Jason Robert Brown[13, The Last Five Years, etc.] to get the job), in terms of the appropriate weight it treats the subject of the Leo Frank case and the cultural and systemic prejudices that shaped it's outcome and aftermath.
Less hinging on the dramatic musical airs of Les Miserables, and more akin to a musical equivalent to Arthur Miller's The Crucible (in terms of the tone and themes it enforces) in my opinion
I remember this, but never saw it. I was thinking I was still in 5th grade, and seeing the release date confirmed that. 25 years.
If you like historical musicals, you should check out Parade. Sadly, there's no movie or video recording, but there's a cast album. It's a great show, and amazingly accurate.
@ The Cynical Historian. Have you done a video about Unbroken (2014)? If not, then can you (in honor of Memorial day.)? please?
I have
The Cynical Historian. found it. Thanks!
Have you done one of these on "There Will Be Blood" the movie loosely based on the Upton Sinclair book "Oil"
bales most famous movie by his own account more people ask him about this than batman
Which sucks because from what I've heard he hated this movie.
I don't know if you've seen the broadway version but I would like to know your thoughts on bringing in a female reporter/main character to historical context and just as a comparison to the film.
While a female reporter wouldn't be accurate, I don't think would affect the narrative in any way if played straight. They existed, and the reporter in the film was represented numerous reporters, not just a single dude.
@@CynicalHistorian I'm afraid Amy Y has buried the lead by not revealing that the female reporter added to the Broadway version is PULITZER'S DAUGHTER, named for an actual daughter he had who died as a 2-year-old, and that the whole story is reconfigured to be primarily about a romance between Pulitzer's daughter and the strike leader who is still called "Jack Kelly," but who is now a wimpy aspiring artist rather than a valiant
aspiring cowboy (now where else did we see the romance of a lower-class aspiring artist with upper-class girl? We only use the best, so thanks again James Cameron). The play also manages to suggest that the newsies' strike would have failed if not for the help of Pulitzer's own daughter.
Jack kelly is supposed to represent kid blink.
Cause the TRUE story happened a long time ago, kid blink wouldn’t be alive.
The music and the dances in the musical never happened in the TRUE story, they were all just added by Disney.
Waterfront is a great movie about a strike. It's one of my favorites.
I started wearing flat caps when I was younger just because of this movie. I still wear them today, even though I don't like the movie as much anymore.
List of movies to recommend:
-Back to 1942
-Der Utertang
-Antwone Fisher
-Saving Private Ryan
-White Tiger
The broadway fixed some of the stuff
can you do "Sing Kids" (1993)?
pyulitzer
I would like to see a remastered version of newsies like a new movie
@@ndy8463 I believe, Andy, that SimulatedSpirits is not talking about a re-make, but rather a re-release of the original film using a print of the highest possible quality. Personally, I would like to see the many deleted scenes from the movie (including, reportedly, five musical sequences), either put back into a "director's cut," or offered as extras.
my dad was news boy in like the 70s
Thoughts on Hamilton?
Haven't seen it. I need a movie to review it
The Cynical Historian have you at least heard the soundtrack?
Some of it. Wasn't really paying attention, but i could tell there were characters who shouldn't have been talking to each other
Given that this video was done in 2017, and that there has since been canon print about how the film's stories went from Bob Tzudiker & Noni White's original, well-researched vision through the filter of general studio filmmaking and the gristmill of Disney's attempts to reinvigorate the classic movie-musical, you should make some clarifications. Further, the Broadway musical, under the creative license of legend Harvey Fierstein, more tightly-wound the story and focused on capturing the spirit, if not the absolute truth of the actual historical events.
There is a reason stories are touted as "BASED on/INSPIRED by" historical events. It's because the individual nuances of a real-world conflict of this nature are impossible to capture in the run-time of a feature film. So license is taken. And hands touch the product who've never researched the original material. But the spirit is there. And now, unlike in 1992, is Google.
The original filmmakers and the subsequent representatives of Disney Theatrical have more-than stipulated to the historical license taken to tell a captivating story. And the EIGHT Tony Award nominations, sold-out run at Paper Mill and on Broadway, wildly successful tours across America, and flourishing productions at theatres of all levels bears out the fact that Tzudicker/White struck gold with at least the core idea of telling this story.
As fun as it may look ceiling fans can't hold some ones weight and be spun like that. it will will break and come out of the ceiling..... Trust me lol
Why should that matter when is just a movie based on Riley events is the movie is the best on your role events all the time?
What about goodnight and goodluck?
I’ve counted and I’ve watched newsies about 27 times 😩
did you know that Phantom of the Opera is based off a true story?
That’s a lie.
Woah wait its a true story?
There is a new biographical war film called Megan Leavey. It is said to me in released on June 9, 2017. What are your thoughts on this upcoming movie?
christian bale is pants wettingly sexy in this movie XD

Funny, since I hate musicals, I don't share the same sentiment.
The story reminds me of billy Elliot
All journalism is yellow journalism.
