    Pretty dress! I was wondering why you put a center seam in the bias of the front and back of this dress. I drafted a pattern years back from a dress that I bought that was almost exactly like this one but the bias fronts and backs were one piece. I think that you will like it better without the front and back seams. I loved mine and labeled the pattern My Favorite summer dress. Your dress is just beautiful.

      I agree, the front could have been cut without a seam but she definitely needs the back seam to get the proper shaping.

      Probably because the fabric wouldn’t stretch in the same way on both sides of the body if the it was cut in one piece (since it has a sidewise but not lengthwise stretch)?

    At 14:53...raise the dress at the shoulders. The underbust and back of the V will be better where you want them.

      @susanstewart1402 10 месяцев назад +1

      I think there is a reason the V-neck is not so low and the front seams go across the bust a bit. Maybe it's the best way.

    I really liked this video and the way you explained your process down to the needles you used. I really have not been sewing that long and am not really as confident as I'd like to be... but ever since I started teaching myself and also taking a few online classes, I've learned just about everything from RUclipsrs. I would have been a nervous wreck putting that shirring in the back, but it worked out beautifully. I know I'm always tooting your horn but you have really made some amazing pieces Casey. Love it.

    With satins you need to press your pieces and seams as you go to stop the puckering. Nice dress.

    Very slinky 1930s-ish! Love it! Working on my first Brigit tee. It would be a lot easier if my machines would cooperate 😂. Two machines don’t like the fabric and my serger got a snarl. Oh, well, I’m sure I’ll get it figured out!

    Totally fabulous, as usual, Casey! Really love the colour on you. I'm not sure if you've had your colours done, but I always think you're a winter. Maybe. Anyway... Hope you have/had a wonderful time at the wedding and get lots of compliments on your dress! I am yet to make a bias-cut anything. I'm a bit nervous about all the figure hugging-ness lol. I keep looking at the Soften Studio Lea Bias Dress as it's loosely hugging, if that makes sense. We shall see. Anyway, thanks for sharing! x

      Thanks, Faith! The wedding was so much fun...lots of dancing :) This was maybe my second bias cut garment, but had more going on than the first one I made so I learned a few things that I might do differently next time! And I want to try it in a linen, i think that would be so nice.

    Bias-cut designs are very unique in their construction and choice of fabric. I have seen vintage slip dresses, and read vintage Vogue designer patterns that shed a lot of light on the process. The fabric is best if it is slinky but fairly substantial .. silk charmeuse medium-heavy. Too stretchy or unbalanced stretch in different directions is a problem. The Vogue patterns add 1-1/5 inches to the seam allowances! You can't predict what will happen with hanging. A friend is necessary for the final try-on and hem levelling. I am not sure how best to store to avoid further distortion. Suitable fabric will behave better. Having said all that, the dress is terrific on you and the colour is particularly great at night.

    • @PatternScout
      @PatternScout  10 месяцев назад +1

      I took a risk with the stretch satin and I definitely agree with all the points you made! It wasn't as forgiving in those seams and I learned a lot through this process. I may have to revisit the project with a better, non-stretch satin (I saw some viscose satin on the Mood Fabrics website that looks beautiful!). I actually could have just cut this dress on-grain, in hindsight, and taken advantage of the stretch already in the fabric (and avoided that pesky center front seam!). Thank you for the tips and kind words!

    Beautiful dress! I just picked up a black jacquard and seeing your dress I want to make one with this fabric. But my width isn’t enough to cut on the bias I don’t think. I’ll have to finagle it somehow.

  • @lavendelblau9835
    @lavendelblau9835 10 месяцев назад +2

    Very nice. Maybe it could be better if you cut the front piece as one so you do not have the problem with the seam. Hope you understand what i mean.

    Although it’s a cute dress, I wouldn’t call it a slip dress. What I consider a slip dress has skinny straps like a slip. I would call your dress more of a sheath.
