Hard to see properly in the video, but might it be the case your exposure compensation is set to -2?
You just hit the nail right on the head! It was!!
The camera is down 2 stops though but that explains my under exposed shots
I was going to say! There's no way that shot of the feather was f8 @ 1/125 with APX100. Glad you're having fun with the OM20 - they're wonderful SLR's with great lenses.
Very very inspiring video, thank you very much, that's all, I will take out my Olympus Om1 two reels of kentmere 100 film and go for a walk on my day off!)))Thanks again!
Hi Roger, Thanks for the video. I liked the abstract effect of those close-up shots of wood constructions. Also the idea of composing a lot with diagonals! Looking forward to more of this: my wife at the hairdresser, my wife at the beauty parlor, my wife at the dentist.. Lot of opportunities not to miss out 😂😇
I have two corgis that are just the greatest and we all thank you for picking up the broken glass. Love the images and all your videos. Happy New Year to you and yours
Glad you like them!
Olympus OM... In my humble opinion, one of the best cameras EVER!
You asked for viewers to timestamp a favorite part. I liked it all but but really loved the @18:23 mark where you said " as long it is film, I can still go out and take photographs." Huge thumbs up!
I have an Olympus OM1 and love it. I've been meaning to do a series of photos of barns in my local area, you talking about photographing walls has made me think I need to crack on.
Walls are interesting some being built hundreds of years ago. Nice the OM1!
I really like your videos, learned a lot! Thank you and Happy New Year
Glad you like them!
Excellent video. I had an Olympus OM-10 way back in the early 1980s. It was a good camera but I sold it and stuck with my Nikons. It was every bit as sharp and accurate as the Nikons, but it was a bit odd feeling and quirky to use. Olympus makes great cameras.
Great video Rodger, loved the picture at the end Debs 👍😀
Glad you enjoyed it Debs ha ha... Sorry it was a bit out of focus. My lens kept steaming up in there x
so good to see people able to see so many details and composition. I try to go out and just shoot, I can't :( it takes me so long to finish a shot. Love the steps with the sand
Cheers Maxence
Loving your videos roger alongside my trusty Nikons I have a few OMs 10 30 1 & 2 and aOM4 they are lovely to use lenses are cheap as chips but need to be stored properly as lots seem to suffer with fungus they are great for street photography and a simple day out lite and simple very tempting to add a OM 20 I do enjoy my OM 30 for its focus confirmation keep on shooting I enjoy seeing your adventures and lovely images
Great video! I also like APX 100 and Rodinal stand developing combination, get great contrast! Nice film for little money!
My first "real" camera was an Olympus OM1 ... I love the feel and look of Olympus cameras!!!
Little classics aren't they Brain
Hi Roger, I do enjoy hangin out with you on your channel. My renewed film adventure wants to do what you do, except I’m gonna scan and Lightroom pics instead of playin in Darkroom puddles.
I’ve got cameras, I’ve got lots o film. Developing kit is ready
What I’m learning from you lately is to set out on a photo walkabout with a goal, today it was angles, last one I remember was metal. I can honestly say I’ve never done photography that way, but I can see how it can drive creativity.
Your topics of film types, camera reviews, exposure strategy, developing techniques are what I find interesting
Cheers I'm glad it's inspired you. No matter you have no darkroom. You'l always have the negs and scans to enjoy
Good video, Roger, and great advice regarding ideas drying up - just get out there and shoot!
I'm sure I'm not alone in shouting "White chair legs stacked in the background" at 3:23 - a bit corny, but it gets the juices flowing.
You know I nearly took that one!
Great video - thanks you Roger.
Glad you enjoyed it
Another great video. Keep it up Rodger,
Thanks mate
Really enjoyed this. I would have been tempted by the stack of chairs in the background where you took the first photo. Great job with the glass!
Well spotted. Another said the same. I nearly did!
Your enthusiasm is catching Roger. Currently seriously considering a pinhole camera and have been out with a Zeiss Ikon Nettar recently which delivered some surprisingly good and atmospheric images!
Great camera the Ikon
Brilliant video, Guv’na!
Its so honest, so real, so unpretentious. And you’re not the pushy type pretending to be a big-timer “authority” (Oh!..forgotten that you’re not American😂😂). What a fookin’ refreshing change.
Keep up the great work.
SUBSCRIBED!
Lol. Cheers
Cool shots! I've got a little challenge for when you get a sunny day: get a macro lens for the OM20, a 400 ISO film, and go out take pictures of bees, butterflies, bugs, etc. or just wild flowers and plants, all handheld. You don't have to go far into the wilderness, your backyard is fine to begin with. I recently got into this kind of macro photography and it's very challenging but so rewarding!
I love the Zuiko Auto-Macro 1:3,5/50 for macro even on my Canon RP
I really like your vlogs! Great channel dear Roger.
Thanks very much!
My dog watched your video as well. On behalf of the dog, I like to say thank you for cleaning up the beach of broken glass! Now, your channel has gotten a new fan-boy (dog). :-)
Hey poochy 👋
Great inspirational video, Roger . Really great image of the surfer dude .Lol. :) KB
Thanks 👍
I still got my OM20, I should give more time and start again to shoot in film.
Being properly exposed, APX100 shows its best in rodinal 1:100/stand. Portraits are glowing and breathing. Should definitely try it! Cheers
Thanks for that tip!
Well for what it's worth, I think the low angle you used on the video section of the smaller of the two logs would have looked great as a still picture. Good work with the glass too, very thoughtful.
I thought that when I replayed the video!
Some well thought out shots there
The broken glass is a disgrace I agree but it's even worse on footpaths. I often encounter this when walking our or my mother's dog 😱
Yeah it's mad to see Eltin
Hi Roger, as for possible compositions, go back and shoot the gull painting on the wall. Not straight on but with the wooden shed in the background. Should look pretty cool 🙂
Roger you're correct on the film. Kentmere/Ilfordpan/Agfa/Rollei is the same. The 100 is better than the 400, which is tricky to develop.
Yes I think the Rollei RPX 100 is the same as the Agfa Photo APX100. Some of the other emulsions by Adox are actually EFKE.
@Saxon Eyles thanks for the correction. So development time is different with those?
This type of photography allows one to be fully focused on the act of capturing the moment…real photography.
If you used a Fujifilm digital camera (which im using), you’d be inundated and pre-occupied with frivolous things such as:
1. Which Film Simulation to use?
2. Which Dynamic Range setting to use?
3. Or to leave it to Dynamic Range Priority?😂
4. Shooting in RAW and then spending lots of time at home to manipulate each RAW image, very often into disreality..looking very different from what the eyes previously saw.
With your style of photography, you capture it exactly as it was, either in colour or b&w, while focusing on the most basic fundamentals…composition, aperture, ASA.
And thats GREAT!
I sat down last winter and compared Agfa 100 and Kentmere 100 from all the photo's I had. I'll preface this by saying the different rolls were taken with a selection of different cameras and lenses, probably developed in different developers as well and of course taken in different lighting conditions - I'm not comparing old Agfa, as I've never shot any - my personal opinion is that the Agfa 100's in general come out slightly less contrasty, and I prefer them. As stated above this isn't a scientific test comparison. As they are about the same price point I wouldn't be surprised if they were the same film. I'm happy shooting with either as I tend to prefer slower films.
Well done picking up the glass, good deed for the day done.
The two girls that work in the nail parlour are gorgeous. If I wasn't so far away I'd be coming down to get them to hold my hand 😉
Ha Ha they are nice ladies. Unfortunately I cut my own hair lol
The background 12:35 seems interesting with a lot of intersecting lines of the different buildings
Best way to spend the hour Roger. I used to love the apx 100 film, but alas it is not made in 120. Surprised to learn from the comments that the apx and several other films are really all the same!! Particularly liked the curved bench shot with people in the background. Think there’s more to be had with the rope and the sand.
That bench shot I had moments to frame as that couple were walking by. Took that photo and some guy gave me a bizarre look ha ha.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss sometimes you have to be thick skinned when out with your camera! P.s. Thankyou for picking up the glass. You can’t believe what some people will do can you.
Another great video! Just put the mask on when you're inside, no matter the situation, that's being nice to others. Everyone can hear you pretty well with it.
Okay...
Yes, mum.....scaremongerer.
Hi Roger, regarding the meter in your OM20 it uses “ off the film metering” which basically means you need a film in for the meter to be accurate! So it may not be as far out as you think? Just a thought mate! Fantastic video 👍
Good point.
Great pictures. Thanks. For me, a 50mm lens means 1/60 is the longest shutter speed. I admire your stability.
Don’t feel bad, with practice, most people can handhold up to 1/10. I have practiced to the extent that I can handhold Bulb shots. Practice makes perfect!
With a leaf I can get to about 1/15th, with a mirror I struggle at 1/30th
I can shoot 1/15 - 1/8 with an SLR
Another great video, Roger! Have you tried loading 35mm film in your cameras in the dark? All you need to do is roll the film on once, then you can start shooting without any exposed film right away. I've managed 40 shots on my last roll of HP5 that way.
I have Joe. Great way to secure the first frame and as you say a few extra
Yesterday, Saturday 08/01/2022, yes in the insane rain and wind we had, I drove and photographed in and around Swanage ending at Durdle Door, where the rain gods gave us a hours reprieve to snap away.
Developing the negs later today and finger crossed I will have some keepers.
The digital "backups" cam out very well and ig my light meter is working on my Canon AL-1, I have high hopes 🙂
Wishing you well.
Hope you got some good photos Dave!
tempted to get om20 got the om10
I have the OMG which I picked up for $25 at a yard sale. It also has the 50mm and it tends to expose just a tad over. Which i actually prefer with the film I shoot anyways. Cameras small and light weight and has a nice bright viewfinder.
I think the OMG is the OM20 branded as such for the States. Like the F90X and N90X. I wonder why they did that?
And thats a great bargain Terry!!
You make a good point about digital. However, I usually composed my digital shot and take the picture. Sometimes I sneak a quick look, but usually I don't. Horses for courses I suppose, but I do try to mimic my old film days with digital. I do feel inspired to drag out the RB67 and shoot again, but..lack of darkroom space is a problem for me. As usual, an inspirational video..and, thank you for making this content available on RUclips..much appreciated. Regards..David.
Hi David, you can do developing at home in a changing bag and print in a shared darkroom.
I used to put a Pentax 50mm lens on my Canon DSLR. Tape the back screen over. Set the camera to just JPG and Monochrome and ISO 3200 and limit myself to 36 exposures on street photography. Was fun to see what I got after.
Roger, as usual a thoroughly enjoyable video with some absolute stonking photos. I had a look for the light meter app but couldn't find it, any chance of a link or a confirmation of which app it is? It looked a lot better than the one I use.
Also, another example of what a fab fella you are, clearing up that glass on the sand, huge respect to you sir.
Sorry Mads.... it's this one play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lamultimedialab.aplightmeter&hl=en_GB&gl=US
Hi Roger. I enjoyed the vid as always. How about a close up shot of the stacked chairs that were to your right at 04.00 mins . Could be some good shapes and angles there. Just a thought.
Good spot Paul!
Was screaming internally for a snap of the sheds by the beach... Thought that was up Rodger's alley.
I kept looking at them David. I'm not sure what's in them. Another time lol
Thanks for a fun and inspiring video. I’ve tried that film multiple times, but never gotten it to work properly for me. I find that I easily lose the mid-tones. Maybe I should try some more abstract stuff and Rodinal stand with it. 😊
I used the Rodinal Espen to throw some grunt into it.
Try shooting it at + 1 stop, develop at box speed. I do, it gives it a litte more contrast.
It does develop well with Caffenol CL Semi-Stand too (30 min Box speed, 70 min +2 push). Therefore I dislike the 400 which is tricky to develop and quite flat, so I take the contrasty Foma 400.
An image that might work @ 7:42 on your right the lamppost, semicircle and the wooden board :)
Nice spot John 👍
Ride the wild surf!
At 2:41, I thought the roofing on the shed behind you had an interesting texture.
You're right Mark. Well spotted.
Wild man!
Is he on speed?
I have some thin black gloves for 'Joggers' bought in Brentwood sale price in the Sportsworld shop -- you can use your camera controls in the COLD and they also ;protect you from 'Touching COVID - Laden Surfaces' whe n you are out.
Great idea Pete!
Another option was to get a manicure :P
LOL!!!
I got this from AG: the HONEST photo dealers! 😄
Photo brand - APX100 and APX400. They are NOT the same as the original APX films being sold before Agfa closed down in 2005 - they are re-branded products and, as far as we can see, identical to Kentmere 100 and 400 and also made by Ilford. As such we have decided to offer just the Kentmere films as we obtain these direct from the factory.
Thanks for the info!
Another good video I like the agfa film but prefer Ilford FP4, Have you shot street photos from high places i.e. from the top of a Car park
Yes I was doing just that the other day Katharine. Newport. Overlooking the shops opposite tk max
I expose the APX 100 and 400 at +1 stop and develop at box speed, if not, I find that the negatives are underexposed, and occasionally I'm struggling when spooling the film onto the reel, it sometimes gets stuck.
Apart from that it's a nice cheap film.
Very nice photographs Roger. This AGFA APX is actually not AGFA as we knew it, it is AGFA PHOTO, a completely different company with rights to use the AGFA name . The film is manufactured by Harman ( Ilford's parent company ) who also manufacture Kentmere. I believe that the new ' Fuji Acros II ' is also manufactured by Harman. Another funny thing that might be of interest. Just before Christmas, I ran out of 35mm Fomapan 200. It would have been a long wait from the usual outlets, but Amazon could get it to me ontime, and the price was actually not too bad considering that I didn't have to pay the usual £5.99 or £ 7.99 postage . In any case I got five of them and put a roll in my Canon Eos 5 SLR and did a pretty decent session. When I loaded the film and developed it, it had the usual Foma edge markings of ULTRA which is correct for Fomapan 200, but the cassette looked odd. When I looked closer it appeared that there was another label under the Foma one on the cassette. I carefully peeled the top Foma label off and to my surprise the label under it read Ultrafine Extreme 100. Now does this mean that Foma manufactures Ultrafine films? I know these are not available in the UK for some reason.
Ultrafine has been unavailable in the states for over a year. Never in stock.
We don't get Ultra here Lensman. I had some shipped to me once and I thought the packaging looked very Ilford/Harman. I look at this website to see what's what... industrieplus.net/dxdatabase/rechfilm.php?name=ultrafine+100 I've often see the Foma label under 35mm cassettes. To be honest I usually stick with Ilford/Kodak/ORWO (Kodak if I am feeling flush), But for the newbie film shooter all that fancy film packaging must look fun to try. So you're a Foma 200 shooter?
Amazon is very expensive on Film. Better directly order from the Foma factory. They're dirt cheap but shipping is a bit more expensive (about 12 Euros to Germany), so you should order a bit more like developers or paper too.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I shoot Fomapan 200 mainly in 120 and 4X5. I will not be using the 120 once my stock runs out as I have had too many emulsion faults with the 120 ( the dreaded streaks and purple dots ), the 4X5 is fine. The 35 mm didn't give satisfactory results until I tried it in the ADOX HR developer. The results were magic. Tonality to die for. Full tonal range with smooth transition, but one needs to watch the highlights still. I rate it at iso 100. I'd have to look at the notes for the development times. It is a little on the grainy side but nothing too prominent . The iso 100 emulsion is also beautiful, but it has to be rated @ iso 40 or 50 depending on the developer to really show what it can do. I also use Ilford, Adox, Rollei and despite my reservations about being ripped off, Kodak Tmax 100 and TMY-2. I still have a few Acros 100 left from 2010, when I used to buy them for £ 2.90 a roll when I bought 10 rolls. I don't think they are worth £12.00 a roll. No film is. Unfortunately even cheap as chips Foma has gone up in price quite considerably in the last 18 months. I really don't know where the market is going with the present film pricing, all when the price of digital image making is getting cheaper.
@@arneheeringa96 I don't feel the need to order directly from Foma. I only ordered from Amazon since I had ran out and there was no other way of getting the films before Christmas. And yes, I do feel that the postage is expensive. Films have gone up by 50% in price during the last 18 months in the UK for whatever reason.
12:23 in... lol!
lol
Great video. What's your thoughts on the fujifilm digital cameras and their film simulation?
I've never used one. I can't imagine it gives the same feeling as shooting film
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Nah, definitely not the same feeling, especially when it comes to the print process. Still nice to see that fuji are trying to make cameras that seem to be aimed at photography first and the process of taking photos, particularly the x pro 3.
What if any batteries do you use in OM20? I got hearing aid batteries and holder from amazon for my OM1n. The batteries are from the company that says they keep on going longer etc.so good make. After a few weeks in camera unused with the meter switched off it leaked and the meter needle still stayed in the middle instead of parked with the battery removed and battery compartment without its cover. Best removed methinks when not in use. Loved the vid and the last log images.
Yes I use hearing aid batteries.
Enjoyed your video Roger. Have you ever shot the original Agfa APX 100 ? I have a few expired rolls from just before it was discontinued if you’re interested?
I have not Dee. I have lots of expired film to shoot Dee but thanks very much for the offer, very kind x
The original Agfa Films were better. Have a good time with them!
AFAIK the AgfaPhoto APX 100, Rollei RPX 100, Adox CHM 100 and Kentmere 100 are all the same.
comparison of APX100, Kentemere100 and Rollei1000 at least: ruclips.net/video/0ZcTZL4NG1c/видео.html
I believe you’re right with the Kentmere 100 being repackaged as APX 100. Glad to see you enjoy shooting with it!
hi, i have om20 as well. However, i lost the iso cover. do u know how can I find one? thanks
Mikey Wright;)
For a minute I thought you were at the hairdressers....
Imagine! LOL
Is there an actual sun dial there or is that just the name of the cafe? I guess there is no picture while there is no sun but for some other day.
I don't think there is a sun dial there Janna. I didn't even notice the name
What is the apple light meter app?
I don't have apple.
OM-20? How far up does it go? OM-30? I knew there was an OM-10. The only Olympus I own is an FT 1/2-frame.
Some good info on here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympus_OM_system
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Ah. Thanks. That answered a lot of questions. Thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to point that out. Looking forward to your next upload.
White horses
Is that what they are called?
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss yes it’s the waves breaking on the shore . I looked it up and the white foam seems to be like a horse’s mane
Pic 14:28 please 😉
