- One of the most frequented nightlife spots in Rio de Janeiro, Cidade Maravilhosa, Pedra do Sal is one of the greatest strongholds of samba and history in Brazil.
Located in downtown Rio, in the Saúde district at the entrance to Morro da Conceição.
Pedra do Sal is simply the place where the roda de samba emerged, a practice that is so common throughout the country today. And as samba is the musical style that identifies Brazil in the world, because it said samba, it said Brazil and vice versa, so you can imagine how the place is culturally very important for the country.

It is so important that Pedra do Sal is listed by the State Institute of Cultural Heritage.
In addition to samba, the place has historical importance for Afro-Carioca culture. For there is a Remnant Community of Quilombos - a population of black slaves fleeing slavery - called Little Africa, which was full of Zungus (collective houses occupied by ex-slaves)
At first glance, the location is nothing more than a staircase, surrounded by walls with drawings that translate the history of the place.
There are samba circles there, mainly on Mondays and Fridays. There is no admission fee, everyone stands up, drinks their cold beer and enjoys the samba running freely and the unique atmosphere that engulfs the audience.
Some names of samba dancers who participated and gave rise to this rich history are Donga, João da Baiana, Pixinguinha and Heitor dos Prazeres.
History of Pedra do Sal
Name Pedra do Sal
In the early 1600s, in the same place where today Pedra do Sal is located, there was a place known as Little Africa: there slaves working in the docks would gather to make offerings, play their drums and share moments of joy in samba circles marked on the palm, tambourine and plate-and-knife.
The salt, which some time ago was used as currency, was sold in that region, close to Praça Mauá and the Cais do Porto. The name Pedra do Sal, was given because of this activity. The historic place is also known for having been a point of sale for slaves who came on slave ships. The first samba dancers in the region were even dockworkers who worked on account of the salt that arrived on the ships.
There, a grandson of slaves wrote most of his verses: the famous João da Baiana. An Estiva worker, João wrote humorous songs that were full of criticisms of racism and the unequal regime that prevailed at the time. The famous song “Batuque de Cozinha” is an example of the creative way that João found to give visibility to the scene of injustices of that time. At Pedra do Sal, João met with childhood friends of Donga and Heitor dos Prazeres, in addition to meeting Pixinguinha to sing his sambas.
