    Hi John, layout coming along nicely! Liking the platforms and the new backboards have transformed the look and will better when you coming your running sessions! I’m so late on watching my RUclips videos with one thing and another but catching up now 😉Cheers Gary

      Hi Gary, I’m a bit behind myself, I’m even sometimes forgetting to watch some and realising when I watch the next episode I’ve missed the last!
      Thanks, the back boards have made a difference and definitely wasn’t a job for a 60 year old man, lol!
      I’m well behind doing stuff to the layout with life getting in the way and the dark arts of electrics which has proved a problem with the point motors, which I have hopefully now sussed out after lots of head scratching and swearing!
      Cheers for now mate, I’m just off to golf, John

    Hi John! Great job getting the backscene boards secured around the cabin! They look really good as they curve their way around! Version 3 of the platform edges are looking great, with lots of details in the brickwork! By the time you present us with version 4 they're going to be absolutely amazing! Lol! Enjoyed watching and hearing the 50 as it trundled around the layout! I've got one on my list but don't think it will run on my inner loop which has 2nd radius curves as part of it! Keep up the good work! All the best, Ian.

      @exehavenharbour  Год назад +1

      Hi Ian, if you’d seen some of the positions I had to get mysel in to fit the back scenes you’d have been proud of me, something I don’t want to do again in a hurry! Happy with how they turned out though.
      Lol! Yes I’m hoping version 3 will be th last, I’m really happy with how they turned out.
      That class 50 is a solid performer Ian, it’s capable of pulling some long rakes even round the gradients on my layout without any trouble at all.
      Cheers for now Ian, John

    Backscenes look much better John with the additional height. Something I need to crack on and do on my layout. It makes such a difference to the overall appearance. Have a good weekend mate. Best regards, Jeremy.

      @exehavenharbour  Год назад +1

      Hi Jeremy, it took a toll on my 60 year old body getting into positions that perhaps it shouldn’t these days, lol!
      But yes they make a real difference and with a bit more fettling they will look even better. Fingers crossed.
      Hope you’re well, cheers for now, John

    Loving the fitted backscene John, changes the whole appearance for the better mate.
    With regard the curved platform, not sure if this is going to work, but I am going to cut a strip of plastic card about a foot long that will be the correct width so that when it is butted up against the end of the railway sleepers to the platform wall it will allow the carriage to be the correct distance from the platform edge. Naturally the track will be already glued in place. All you have to do is move the platform wall so that it is tight up against the plastic strip then glue the platform wall in place. You can then move the plastic strip along or cut more of them, as many as you want. I hope you can understand what I mean.

    • @exehavenharbour
      @exehavenharbour  Год назад

      Yes got it Chris, not a bad idea that, I may have a go, the platform edging I’ve built is pretty flexible so it shouldn’t be to much of a problem, it’s actually cutting the platform top right that is tricky. I’ve had two goes at it now, it’s been very close but not quite good enough. I’m hoping this time following John Warner’s method it should be fine.
      Point motors this week, I’m happy now I understand what to do, so it’s just getting the last couple of holes drilled then a working out the wiring loom so it’s all nice and neat.
      Hope you’re feeling a little better especially if you got the puppy, cheers Chris, John

    Backscenes look good. You've done exactly what I decided to do as I'd seen so many dodgy, crinkly backscenes on line! By the time you get the scenery, trees, etc in place it looks fine. Keep up the good work, enjoy fitting the point motors, always good fun (?).

    • @exehavenharbour
      @exehavenharbour  Год назад

      Hi David, 🤔 fitting point motors, fun, well maybe, I’m looking forward to doing it as it’s another step forward towards starting to build the Budleigh Regis area.
      I’m happy with the back scenes, little more work on them and they’ll look good. I agree with you, buildings and tress with that background should look fine. After having crinkly back scenes this is a nice change!
      Cheers for now, John

    Hi John, another great update ! The curved backscenes have been worth all the physical discomfort! Being of a similar age to you I dread going under the layout even though I keep reasonably fit! You mentioned clouds; a method I have found effective is to stipple white poster paint on to the blue background. Intensity is easy too vary by amount of paint used. It gives an abstract look and it is easy to create transparent clouds. From a distance it is effective and gives a sense of depth and movement.

    • @exehavenharbour
      @exehavenharbour  Год назад

      Hi Karl, thanks for the info mate, clouds aren’t out of the question although for simplicity for now it’s a beautiful summers day at Exehaven!
      Lol! Yes, I class myself reasonably fit for my age, but any sustained awkward physical work can be a nightmare!
      Cheers for now Karl, thanks for watching and commenting, John

    Nice update John, You have certainly got lots done! Platform certainly looks nice, I built mine a similar way on the Goathland layout but I used the Peco edging. One thing I did differently to John Piccadillly was to put some mdf blocks behind the edging in strategic places so the station lighting had something more solid to go into rather than the platform being totally hollow. Good luck with the point motors, always a fun challenge but well worth it when they all work nicely. All the best Tony.

      @exehavenharbour  Год назад +1

      Hi Tony, hope you’re well mate, good advice that about the MDF blocks they shall be taken into consideration when making the platforms.
      Yes starting the point motors tomorrow and looking forward to having them working. After that bit of a dirty brown paint job on the tracks then back to the platforms and station build.
      Cheers for now Tony, John

    Hi John, the extra height of the new backscenes it a great idea, remember, if you try to paint clouds and stuff it up you can always paint over it!🖌 Good start with the latest version of the platform construction, the platform edge is looking good. Getting the spacing between the platform and track is always fun, I had the same issue as someone mentioned in the comments below where it all looked good until I ran a Class 08 😥

    • @exehavenharbour
      @exehavenharbour  Год назад

      Hi John, thanks, a little more fettling on the backscene and it should look fine, clouds aren’t out of the question but for now as I’ve said to some others it’s a beautiful summers day at Exehaven!
      I’m really happy with the platform edges and yes all good advice, I’m going to run my Castle Class round there when I get back to them to check for clearance.
      Point motors next week and then back to platforms and the station build although I might spray the track a dirty brown first.
      So loads happening, cheers for now John, John

    Hello John. So you finally went for the blue background. You mentioned this to me ages ago when I had my blue background and you was saying how the bubbles are a pain. I might actually remove my backscene and go back to plain blue because mine has started to bubble now too. Those platform edges look good, and it's nice to see you have made sure there's a lip across the top. So many modelers don't do the lip because it's more work, but I personally think it's a must. Looking forward to seeing the platforms take shape. Well done mate. Best regards as always, Lee

    • @exehavenharbour
      @exehavenharbour  Год назад +1

      Hi Lee, how’s it going mate? Yes blue backscenes, it’s simple and looks pretty effective when you have trees and buildings in front of it and of course no wrinkles. I do like picture backscenes as on some layouts when Done well create real depth. I don’t blame you if you go back to plain blue, as I say simple and effective.
      As for the platform edges, I’m really pleased how they’ve turned out, as for the lip I think it’s essential to give that realistic look. Quite trick to cut in N Gauge as it’s only 2mm wide!
      Looking forward to your next update Lee, cheers for now, John

    Hi John. Back scenes are just fine, the planer the better. I did lightly spray some greys onto mine here & there just to break it up a bit.. platforms edge is a good start . Cheers.

      Hi David, yes I like a plain back scene, but must admit on some layouts a picture back scene really adds some depth.
      I’m really happy with the platform edge, it’s come out really well.
      Making a start on the point motors next week which I’m looking forward to, then I’ll spray the tracks a dirty brown then back to building the station.
      Cheers David, John

    Hi John - nice bit of work on the backscene boards. They do provide a bit of continuity around the whole layout. When you come to do the platform edge make sure their is enough space to allow for the connecting rods of either a class 08 or any steam engines you may have. My first platforms were all glued in place and my mk3's ran nice and close. Then my wife bought me a class 08 - as it has outside con rods the loco got stuck on the platform edges. 😟 I therefore had to " make modifications" !! Your so close to the 1k sub mark - well deserved - great layout in the making you have there. Did like you saying you had better clean up before "she who must be obeyed" got home - hope you cleared away the evidence 😅. Nice view of the layout at the end running session. Cheers Euan

    • @exehavenharbour
      @exehavenharbour  Год назад

      Hi Euan, yes all cleared away, she doesn’t mind me working at the dining table but gets a little feisty if it’s not cleared for dinner and we’re eating all around my stuff😬😂
      Just a little more work to do on the backscenes, it was harder work than I thought, it would have been easier if I was 30 rather than 60!
      Good thought that, I’ll run my Castle class in there to make sure, I don’t want to be modifying it anymore, lol!
      Making a start on the point motors next which I’m looking forward to now I know what I’m doing😬. Then I’ll give the tracks a spray of dirty brown paint and I can get back to building the station.
      Grinding my way to 1k Euan, fingers crossed I’ll be there for the next episode! Thanks as ever mate, cheers, John

    Greetings Essex and hello John 👋 great result with the backscene 😍 an extra six inches is always valuable 😳 Shame about the Z21 😫 I did the same a few years back and lost contact with all my point motors 🤬🤬 Hopefully you managed to hoover all those weathering powders up before Mrs Exehaven got home 😇 Very best wishes from the other Wickford ☘️

    • @exehavenharbour
      @exehavenharbour  Год назад +1

      Hi Paul, 🤣😂🤣, an extra six inches has made all the difference🤔🤪 just a bit more fiddling with and it should come good🤦🏻‍♂
      Yes, that has been a right pain with the Z21, i shall sit down with it next week, give it a good talking to and sort it out🙄 At least the internet provider has at last sorted things out🤞🏼
      I nearly got caught out but got things done just in time before Mrs Exehaven walked through the door! She’s away with her sister and friends for a girly weekend so nice and quiet here, with a big golf tournament for my golf society tomorrow and plenty of golf and football on the telly 🥳, hoovering Sunday though before she gets home!
      Cheers for now Paul, John

    Hello John, I like the new less-is-more backscenes. I did something similar myself; raspberry-rippling a tiny amount of a vivid blue through a pot of white paint and brushing it horizontally gave the impression of a pale blue/grey sky with the occasional patch of something a little bluer. The objective of them IMO is that they hide your wall and otherwise not really be noticed. The platform edging is looking very good now - well done for persevering with that! Best wishes -Ed

    • @exehavenharbour
      @exehavenharbour  Год назад

      Hi Ed, thanks very much, little more fettling with the backscenes and they should look fine. I may add a little white to them with a soft cloth but I’ll look at how that comes out first on a practice piece. I like the sound of what you’ve done though👍
      I’m really pleased with the platform edge, it’s come out really well and does look quite realistic.
      Thanks very much for watching and commenting, cheers for now, Ed, John

      Hi Peter, hope you’re well, I like a plain back scene to be honest, some of the printed backscenes look fantastic and give excellent depth but I’m sticking with this now, nice and simple!

    You seem to have got quite a bit done there John. It's strange sometimes that you can a lot of things and yet not seem to see much by way of improvement, and then you do a small bit of scenic work and it looks as if you have transformed the layout. I hope the fitting of the point motors goes well. It will be big step forward to have the points in the station all working. I did like the platform edging. That is going to look very good once it is in with the platform surface. I thought it was nice to see the Class 50 wending its way around past buildings and other stock. It is helping to distract the eye from the bare bones, and start to see the layout. Stephen

    • @exehavenharbour
      @exehavenharbour  Год назад +1

      Hi Stephen, there was a lot of work really with not a lot to show for it, satisfying for me though to get the backscenes done if very awkward to do, it would help being 30 years younger lol!
      I’ll be starting the point motors next week now I’ve got it in my head on how to do it, I’m really looking forward to having them working.
      I’m very pleased with how the platform edging came out in the end, it actually looks better to the eye than it does to the camera. Once the point motors are in, I’ll give the track a spray of some dirty brown and the platforms will start going in.
      When I watched the footage back i thought much the same thing about the buildings and it gave me lots of encouragement going forward with Budleigh Regis.
      Cheers for now Stephen, hope the Model Rail Scotland is going well, John

  • @piccadillymodelrailways

    Good to see progress with the platform. You platforms are relatively straight with a very gentle curve. If you use paper taped together, place it over the rails and run a crayon along the rails. Cut this shape as a template. You won’t be far off. You may find the curve be close just by pulling in back slightly from the rails. See how it goes.

    • @exehavenharbour

    Hi John. Sorry, I'm going to start with a little moan. The description in the More section could have (should have?) gone into the video title. The new backscene(s) certainly should "cure" the bubbles; are you going to add clouds, etc.? The platform edging looks good. Good luck with the next steps. You could always ask Mrs Exhaven to come in and tidy up for you (not too sure how much would end up in the bin, though 😃).

    • @exehavenharbour
      @exehavenharbour  Год назад

      Lol Paul! Not sure Mrs Exehaven would tidy my mess up and asking her could risk a black eye or even worse, no dinner!!!!
      At the moment the backscenes will remain plain, it’s always a beautiful summers day in Exehaven! Bit more fettling to them at the joins will make them look fine. I quite like a plain background but the some of those picture backgrounds add some real depth to some layouts.
      Point motors next week and I can return back to building the station.
      Cheers Paul, John
