Nice update John. Very nice track laying in the station. Looking forward to seeing how the rail bridge comes together. Would definitely like to see the ship completed. - Nicholas.
Hi Nicholas, I’m happy with how the track is now, it took a couple of goes, next is testing the track to see how the trains run over it but fingers crossed all will be well. I’ve been building a bridge over this weekend which you will see in the next episode, I’ll be interested in seeing what you think, cheers for now mate, John
Hi David, I’m really glad you liked it. I’m really enjoying building the Carpathia it’s tricky here and there but it’s progressing ok. Cheers for now mate, John
You are progressing well, John. I enjoyed your piece on the Carpathia. It will be interesting to see your progress. I think the idea of mixing trains with ships is an exciting one!
Hi Karl, thanks, yes I love ships too and was part of the reason for building Exehaven Harbour. It’s so difficult though finding model ships in N Gauge and as you saw this was probably as close as I could get. Maybe one day I’ll have a go at scratch building one! Cheers for now, John
Hi John, great little update, the mouth of the station is really starting to take shape now,the ghd bridge looks like it's going to fit in nicely. Looking forward to seeing more progress. Keep up the good work. Allan
Hi Allan, thanks very much, I’m pleased with the progress, I’ll testing the track in a week or two just to make sure all is well before any more gluing! Glad you like the bridge, I’m actually scratch building another bridge at the moment, but that’s for the next episode, cheers for now mate, John
Wot, No Vacuuming John ! Your decision to move the point towards the station is the right one ! Good to see it Starting to come together, but less time battering little white balls would help !!!!
Lol Mark, getting the right balance between golf and building Exehaven is difficult at times as I love doing both! I’m happy with the track now but testing will prove if anything is not quite right. As for hoovering, I think I’m due another serious go at it soon, it’s getting a bit messy again and the spiders seem to love it!!! Cheers Mark, John
Good evening John! You've made some great progress with your _basic_ track work! Lol! Yes please for more shipbuilding! It looks fantastic, and won't look out of place at all! You could say it's part of a maritime museum to justify its existence in the harbour! Or say it's been converted into a nightclub, or restaurant, or a floating hotel! Looking forward to the next update already! Cheers, Ian.
Lol!, thanks Ian, my basic track laying is obviously ongoing, which has led to me having to bridge the gap properly across the estuary, so a scratch built bridge has been ongoing this weekend which will feature in the next episode. It appears that the Carpathia build is quite popular so I’ll be filming updates as I go with it. Funnily enough I have just been doing more work on the stern which has been particularly tricky! Some good ideas for the ship too mate, I was thinking down the heritage side of things so great minds think alike! Hopefully there’ll be plenty more of interest in the next episode, cheers for now Ian, John
Hi John, thank you, I’ll post updates of The Carpathia as I make more progress and will include in future videos, thanks as always for your support, cheers John, John
Hi John I am very pleased to see your ship building along with the trains. It is nice to see something other than canal and fishing boats on a layout. Cheers Chris
Hi Chris, thanks very much, I’ll include updates as I go with the Carpathia, I’m really enjoying building it, it’s a lovely kit and I hope I can do it some justice, so far so good! Thanks for watching and commenting mate, cheers for now, John
Hi Nat, thanks very much, ill shall include some updates on The Carpathia as we go. I’ll be catching up with your latest video this weekend, cheers for now mate, John
Greetings Essex and hello John 👋 I don't envy the track laying work you have ahead 😥 points are a particular nightmare 😡 but steady as she goes 👍 I'm definitely loving the Carpathia ⚓️build 😍 You really have such patience 😇 to build these kits and get such wonderful results 🤴 Can't wait to see her "sister ship" 😉 Very best wishes from the other Wickford ☘️
Hi Paul, thanks Paul, probably like you I find the track laying a little frustrating at times. I’m happy with how they track looks now and as I break away from the station onto the main line progress should speed up a bit! I’m scratch building a bridge now to cross the gap but that’s for the next episode. As for the Carpathia and The Caronia, which is the other ship it seems to be quite popular so I’ll include more updates as I go. Progress has slowed some what with the Carpathia as the stern is proving tricky but I’m getting there with that to now. I’ll be catching up with the Continental shelf probably tomorrow, so cheers for now, John
Good to see the progress you are making John. The track layout into the station looks good. So far as a point on a slope is concerned I have a point by Grey Havens Station on a 2% incline. It has a surface mounted point motor however, which of course lies parallel to it. It isn't in as prominent position as yours would be of course, but I saw on a forum just the other day that someone had stuck underbrush all over the peco surface point motor to disguise it which I thought was a clever idea. The Carpathia looks a lovely ship and I will be interested to see your progress with that. At 1:250 that might work better for you. I looked up the length off the RMS Carpathia and it was 558 ft long. That would be just under 4ft long in N scale. I don't think many will know its history or its sad demise, or how big it ought to be. It will just look good on the layout which is all that matters. Stephen
Hi Stephen, I’m quite happy with how the track work looks now, testing will tell if there are any problems. Now I have thought about a surface mounted point motor which I still might try although i have been put off because of the slope which is 2% i think without going back to the cabin. That is a cracking idea covering up the motor though I must say, i think DCC Concepts do a very small one now so further investigation may take place. As for The Carpathia it is a lovely card kit, it’s coming together nicely but crikey there are some tricky bits especially around the stern which has taken some time so far and is still not quite finished. With the kit there is a nice potted history of the ship included which is very interesting. I hadn’t done it before but your comment prompted me to get my N Gauge ruler out to see how long it is to scale and it comes in at 332 scale feet. Even in this smaller scale it’s quite an expressive size, which I think is starting to get on Mrs Exehaven’s nerves a bit as it sits on the side board when I’m not working on it!!! There’s still a lot of work to do on it yet but I’ll keep a video log on it and do an update as and when. Cheers for now, John
Hi John it was great to see the layout build and your temporary track for running your trains on while working in there is better been bigger. But now to the best bit that ship looks ace looking forward to seeing more of that. Colin
Hi Colin, i must say I do rather like The Carpathia, it’s been a tricky build and the stern has proved to be a bit awkward, but I’m getting there now. It’s proved very popular so more updates on the ship build to come. As for the layout build, I’m scratch building a bridge so that I can continue the track laying. You’ll see it all in the next update. Looking forward to catching up with your update in the morning, cheers Colin, John
Hi John! Nice update in regards to the boats, Crack on! at the end of the day your channel is called Exehaven Harbour! so boats are to be expected 😁😁😁, If anyone moans it's tough doo dah! 🤣🤣🤣. On a serious note, I think the boat is coming along nicely, I know it's the wrong scale, but I think you'll get away with it, but you wont really know till it's on the layout. All the best Tony.
Hi Tony, yes tough doo dah! 🤣 The ship building seems quite popular so I shall include more updates as I go. It’s a shame there aren’t any proper ships in N Gauge, I actually wrote to JSC (the model company) asking if they could produce some models in N Scale, they’re not adverse to the idea but they’re just not sure how popular it would be plus I think it would take a big change in the printing processes. I have noticed now on their website there is a 1:160 scale section now, but no models so far, so maybe they are thinking about it. Most of their models are 1:400 scale and they do special requests like mine to scale them up. Glad you enjoyed it though, thanks as always for watching and commenting, cheers Tony, John
Hi John. Carpathia is looking really good - please continue to show us your progress with the build. Not putting a turnout on a slope sounds like good advice to me.
Hi Paul, I’ll continue with the updates of the Carpathia, it seems to have proved quite popular! As for the turnout it’ll be on the other side of the bridge I’m currently scratch building at the moment so hopefully you’ll see some of that in the next episode, cheers mate, John
Hi John - progress indeed on the new track layout. Lovely long platforms and station throat. The Carpathia would be good to see through to the end😊. One thought thought - could the station throat be pushed back with the introduction of curved points to allow you to put the diamond crossing in ? cheers Euan
Hi Euan, i have tried various combinations for the junction and this one seemed the best in the end and worked in terms of where the mainline comes from and goes to, hopefully it’ll all come clear in future episodes 🤞🏼. I’ll keep adding updates of the Carpathia as I get on with it, the stern is proving to be quite difficult but I’m getting there now. Cheers Euan, John
Yup - definitely a good idea to move the points forward. Was it always your intention to only have one line in and out over the incline? You could fit two lines in on that bridge that’s all I was thinking and have across over later down the track for both lines. Good to see that the layout is now coming out of the station and I look forward to seeing how you get on in later videos. Regards Steve
Hi Steve, it is a double track mainline, it’s just the junction from the other line that I’ll have to do on the other side of the bridge as there isn’t room to do both on the station side. I’ll get it all wired in in the next few weeks, I’m waiting for a couple of things to arrive so I can get on with that job before I start testing the track. Cheers for now, John
Hi John It’s difficult getting the track layout just right but you seemed to have solved it. Looking forward to the ship building and it will be good to follow its progress. Also nice to see the coaster getting into the shot 😂😂 Cheers Kev
Hi Kev, lol! Your coaster is an integral part of my layout and regularly used!!!😁 I do have a basic track plan but the stations, goods areas and the docks will evolve as I make them. It’s the way I like doing it but it does lead to doing it then re-doing it but I think that’s part of the fun, i think 🤔😂 The ship building seems to be popular so regular updates on the build will be included. Hope you’re all well and the layout is coming on nicely, cheers mate, John
Hi John, nice update, trying to work out the track layout is proving to be a challenge but I'm sure you will eventually work out what you are happy with. I'm a bit like you, I just like to plonk things down and see how they look rather than planning it all on paper beforehand! Will be good to see the progress of the boat construction.
Hi John, i do have a basic plan for the track but the station, goods areas and the docks will evolve as I see what kind of room I have. But yes, like you i like to plank it down and see what I can come up with. The ship build seems to be quite popular so watch out for further updates, I’m also scratch building a bridge which I’m enjoying but that’ll be for the next episode. Cheers for now mate, John
Hi John 2 hours to lay a bit of track and the next day rip it up, we've all done it mate but it's got to be functional and look right to yourself. Liked the boat bit after all if its going on the layout why not show it. It's all good stuff and makes the video more interesting. Great video cheers Andy
Hi Andy, i do have a basic track plan in my head bout the stations, goods areas and the harbour will evolve as I move round the layout and see what room I have, so there could be lots of putting down and ripping up again! As for the ship build it seems to have proved quite popular so watch out for updates as I go. Thanks as always Andy, cheers, John
Good to see your progress and currently designing my own layout (15' x 3' is my space) - keen to do a roundy round as like to leave them running and was hoping to fit a station with 6 platforms in, with 2 mainline loops and a "branch line" loop. I noticed you have gone for that with yours...can I ask what the width of the station with the track in is please? Also like the ship content...I build planes normally so hope to get some 1/144 scale model planes in on an airfield if possible!
Hi Ben, thanks, sounds like you have a reasonable space for your layout. Mine will also be a tail chaser, both the mainline and the branch line will be double track so that I can have four trains running at once. I really love watching the trains go round with a cuppa! Now I just popped out to the cabin to have a measure. The total width of it is 360mm which is the widest part where the station building is, I hope that’s helpful. Like the sound of an airfield it should add some interest to the layout. Cheers for now, John
@@exehavenharbour thanks so much John and for popping out there! Yeah I prefer the tail chasers too and that should give me plenty of space to have a station and the tracks running around. Just need to get the base boards up now...plus I am also doing similar region as I went to uni in Exmouth, and grandad is from Budleigh!
Some nice progress, John. In regards to your cross-over. Can you move your other points closer up towards the platforms, or put in Y points closer towards the station platform? Anyway, look forward to what you do around your bridge/harbour area..cheers
Hi Jason, yes I could but the way I have the land forms planned in my head I think the way I have it now kind of works, time will tell though but nothing is set in stone at this stage! I’m scratch building another bridge to go across the gap but that’s for the next episode, looking forward to more from you mate, cheers for now, John
Hi Chris, yes it’s coming on and once I break away from the station the track laying should go a little quicker as I lay the double track until I get to another junction. I’m scratch building a bridge to go across the estuary bit now but that will come up in the next episode. Cheers for now mate, John
