Hi Paul, a very big thank you for this video. I am from Mbombela (former White River/Nelspruit) Mpumalanga South Africa. Mine just stopped working after a field picnic trip. I have a more elaborate, 3 times 1200 x 450mm sliding drawer kitchen and storage system setup inside this tailgate. I did all of it myself, ensuring everything fitted as tightly against the interior lining as possible, for maximum space utilisation. I had the same story as yours, with dealers, panel-beaters and the like and was desperate. I am a pensioner, aged 74 but having the tools I decided to tackle it myself. I started ripping out the interior. I removed the bed top and had to cut out the shelving of my sliding drawers, just to reach the inside bottom of the door. Then I decided to hunt for something on RUclips. Fortunately, I found your video rather quickly and it is so good and descriptive, that I had no further problems reaching the spot. As there was nothing broken, I reached in, pressed the link head up and pop, it opened as sweetly as ever before. I promise you, I gave a much louder whoop of you than yours. I had a good laugh as I saw you throwing out the ripped-out junk, as it must have looked the same here from the outside. Nothing was broken, two of the holding down bolts have fallen out, supposedly from the many corrugated dirt roads that I have used the vehicle on. The adjustment on the link from the outside latch has shifted because of it and after slight experimentation with the tricky adjuster, I had it perfect. Many many thanks Mate, it really helped me a lot.
you have been a life saver 2 years ago when i had the same problem! And now I have the same problem again, I'm happy your video is still available to refresh my memory 👍 thanks heaps from Amsterdam
thanks a lot. I had the same story as you. But the lock carrier whas broken in a lot of peaces. Horibel. But after 4 days I was abel to repair it whit a lot of glue, patience and beer. I found nothing in the Internet here in spain. To fix it again your video will help me tomorow.
Fear not folks, you may not have to cut open your tailgate. I have the same fitted bed structure as this so there are only a few inches to get my hand / arm down the gap. I spend hours with a bendy coat hanger troubleshooting the other day to no avail. I have watched countless videos but this one was the one for me! I have 0 experience in any of this but using a tent peg I had a fiddle in the leaver area and managed to somehow click it into place and get the tailgate to open. No saws! I was lucky. Now to fix the broken sliding door that wont open 😭
I've got a 94 HiAce with busted handle which I will replace but u fitted a push lever on inside that unlocks door - on my older HiAce I fitted a pull string as mechanism was different. Current model has rear bed set-up
У меня был Т4,там было отверстие на обшивке,чтобы открывать аварийно изнутри.Сейчас Т5 и никакого аварийного отверстия и тросика нет. Обязательно что-то надо придумать. Привет Фольксвагену.
Hi Paul..Just had the same issue but found the lock can be activated via the round hole next to where you cut the sheetmetal..Theres a rubber plug covering it..
Remove number plate drill a hole in the centre push the rod door opens, once you've fixed the problem fit a grommet in the drilled hole and refit number plate
If I'd only watched this video before I undid those two bolts that he said " do not undo these two bolts"! Now my lock carrier is in 50 bits and I'm watching a video where a guy says, do not undo these two bolts. Ffs
If you havent worked it out already you can preinstall the barrel retainer clip before putting the handle back on ruclips.net/video/zoWoeXIMmmk/видео.html

You didn't have to cut as there is a hole already. But this is a great video 👍😂
