KEN! Get over here and do something interesting! Welcome to Southeast Asia's most enigmatic nation locked away in the hilly jungles with animist shrines an bomb shells. #LAOS. This episode was really fun researching because it had such a unique backstory Hope you enjoy it!
I found your music through Jimmy Zhang's interview with Khan and it's really awesome to see you here! I follow you on Instagram and Soundcloud. Keep it up!
The 's' in Laos is because the English name (from French) is the PLURAL of the word "Lao" because it was attributed to the union of three Lao kingdoms. Therefore "Laos" is like saying "the Americas" when referring to North and South America. In English, "LaoSSSS" is perfectly correct.
I'm a history student from Mexico that studied Laos for two semesters in my Asian history courses. I have to admit, I´ve been falling in love with the country ever since and I really hope that one day I'll be able to visit.
I’m learning University with Laotian friends. They are so cute, kind, close,... and they drink beer so good . We usually drink for the Viet-Lao friendship. With love from Vietnam 🇻🇳
I'm Lao and when I was in the Philippines, people there thought I was a Pinoy. Same goes for the rest of my family. They always try to speak to me in Tagalog.
This is unbelievably accurate, Idk how you got all the information and did the research, it seems that some insightful things you said are known only to Laotians, so good job!!!
I had the privilege of travelling in this amazing country. It’s the most beautiful country I’ve ever seen, it’s so unspoilt and pristine. The people are very traditional but also so friendly to tourists and very welcoming, plus the food is delicious. The road from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng had me in awe it’s the most scenic journey I experienced in 3 months travelling all over Southeast Asia. I can’t wait to go back some day
Hate to break it to you but that's most likely not the case anymore. I've just been to Laos earlier this year and there are lots of Chinese companies doing tons road work and carving large chunks off the sides of mountain. If you want to see the beauty of Laos for one last time, better go again as soon as this pandemic is over.
Thank you to put some spot light into Laos. I have been gone almost 40 yrs; I still love to hear a good thing about my heritage. Lao food is the best and the most healthy one.
"Laos" is plural, named after three Lao territories united under French colonialism. So it's actually acceptable to call it "Laos" as an "s" is enunciated in English for plural words. Since you do countries by their English names, (ie: Ivory Coast, East Timor, etc), it's fine for you to pronounce in the English way. Or you could just say ສາທາລະນະລັດ ປະຊາທິປະໄຕ ປະຊາຊົນລາວ ;)
I love this series but when you get to the famous people it would be pretty groovy if you could put in a subtitle what they are generally famous for, like artist, director, author, general, president. Short one or two word descriptions just in case i want to do my own research. Cause sometimes im curious but mostly its just a bunch of names and faces and i cant get much from that.

I love how the content has evolved over the series. However it ends up being kind of sad for older episodes. I'm from Chile and I missed the "places to visit" or "people you might know" segments for that episode. Same for other episodes like Azerbaijan, Brasil or Argentina. Is there any plan on "adding" those segments in the future for older episodes?
I miss Laos, my dad was working there in Vientiene and i flew there every year to spend holiday 2 times in a year. I like the people, our house keeping and her family are very lovely, cooked us very deliciouse food and her kids are my friend during my time there. We was visiting many places there, Luang Prabang are the old capital of Laos, night market, and we had to wake up early morning to see the monks collecting food from the comunity and us too. Was very nice time there. I like the people and of course the food nyummyy. Fish are fresh from the Mekong river, papaya salad are nyummy. The place we disline is Vang Vieng cause there lots of drunk young tourist, laud and impolite. Visited Vang Vieng only 2 times and stayed at the very nice river side hotel and was experinced the local food there too. Sadly my dad had to return back to Europe at 2013. Will retun back to Laos again. ❤
i did see and hear about the changes because of chinas inventions. i can only give the advice to every visitor of laos, to take care for the locals. spend your money to them. and take each change to talk to them. you can talk to young fellas and beg them to tell it to their familys at home. to tell them the tresore of laos is what they allready are and have. there is no reason to become like tailand. be a good tourist! and get yourseld a bamboo bottel. like the working people use! you clean it with cooking it. so you can use it for your drinks at all the streetfood spots. and keep the nature plastic free.
I think we need some clarification on the whole pronunciation thing. Every English dictionary I've checked says Laos is pronounced "lah-ohs" in American or "lei-ous" in British. If the Laotians themselves pronounce their own nation's name "lao," that's good to know, and it seems silly for us not to do so also given how close we already are to doing that, but by the same token we're also very close to pronouncing Denmark the way the Danes do ("danmark"), yet I'm pretty sure we're not actually going to start doing that. And forget about pronouncing Germany as "doichland." There's also situations such as half of Belgium saying "belgie" and the other "belgique." Which would we choose if we don't stick with "belgium"? I just think we need some sort of consistent standard to follow before we start saying that we've been pronouncing Laos wrong all this time.
Most people think that Vientiane is pronounced as "Vien-tian", but its actually pronounced as "Vieng-jan". I know this because I am Thai and it is pronounced the exact same way as the Laotian pronunciation.

Laos is amazingly beautiful without all the tourist traps and dangers of its neighbours and relatively cheap also. Luang Prabang itself its worth a 3 or 4 day stay. As Indonesian, I don't know much about Laos, but thanks to this channel, now I know basically we the SEA people are so similar, food and traditions too. Cool!
Anyone thinks that this episode is kinda skimping it? Barb has made longer episodes before, so why can’t he address the many controversies or cultural rituals that he kept saying “we didn’t have time for”, and instead filled the episode with skits and segues?
Maybe it would take much longer time to research, film, and produce? IIRC he usually didn't get any free time when doing the episodes, and usually there are 4 videos to worry about at the same time.
Didn't trust your pronunciation, so I looked it up myself. It actually IS pronounced Laossssss. Please thumbs up the comment so that others will know too.
The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my life was actually in Laos. I was riding my motorcycle from Vang Vieng up to Luang Prabang. The road I took is absolutely breathtaking and I simply can’t put it into words how happy I felt as I was riding and gazing at the nature and all the surroundings. I had it all for my self. Amazing.

Manilay Vanphavong But it’s still part of La Francophonie, just like Vietnam and Cambodia
First Kirabati = Kirabahs

Latvia.. We're finally heading back to Europe! I missed it ever since I finished watching the Italy video..
Lebaon will probably come after that, so not for long.
Liechtenstein, Lithuania and Luxembourg will be coming after Lesotho, Liberia and Libya, so it's 3 African countries after Lebanon and then back to Europe for another 3
Haha. This guy is hilarious. My geography/history classes would have been awesome had he been my teacher. Will be travelling to Laos by the end of Jan! Stoked!
As Indonesian, I don't know much about Laos, but thanks to this channel, now I know basically we the SEA people are so similar, food and traditions too. Cool!

Anyone thinks that this episode is kinda skimping it? Barb has made longer episodes before, so why can’t he address the many controversies or cultural rituals that he kept saying “we didn’t have time for”, and instead filled the episode with skits and segues?
yeah
19235641 I agree
Maybe it would take much longer time to research, film, and produce? IIRC he usually didn't get any free time when doing the episodes, and usually there are 4 videos to worry about at the same time.
Didn't trust your pronunciation, so I looked it up myself. It actually IS pronounced Laossssss. Please thumbs up the comment so that others will know too.
Its time to learn geography, LAOS!

Amazing.
Hello from Thailand. I enjoyed visiting my neighbor very much. Such a peaceful and beautiful country :). BTW, please find time to do video about Thailand :) .
He does these videos in alphabetical order so you'll have to wait until Paul gets to the "t" section for Thailand
