Freight Train Descends Onto California's Cajon Pass After Derailing | Mayday | On The Move

  • On 12 May 1989, a 69-car freight train goes out of control while descending from California's Cajon Pass. It derails in a residential neighborhood of San Bernardino after reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour (160 km/h). Two residents and two train crew members are killed in the initial crash. More than a week later, an underground gasoline pipeline, damaged by earth-moving equipment during the post-crash clean-up, ruptures and sparks a fire that kills another two people. Clerks in Mojave had greatly underestimated the train's weight, and it had been assembled without enough locomotives to provide adequate braking. Additionally, several of the engines' brakes were completely inoperative, but this information was not passed on to the crews.

I still get the feeling, that at least one of the Railroad Crew aboard that Train on that fateful day, knew that at least one of the Engines didn't have operative brakes. I wonder how much else was known about the defective brakes on any of the other Engines, that is, if anybody else knew anything that should've been brought up, but wasn't. Think about it:If any of these four Engineers knew about any of the Engines having either defective, or no, Brakes, then that would constitute Criminal Liability!
I'm not pointing any fingers at any one (Or possibly more) of these four Engineers, but I still get the feeling, that someone knew about problems with the Brakes on those Engines, and yet decided to just "Keep silent".

@@ronaldshank7589 You are pointing fingers with wild speculation based only on 'that's sus' , the inquiry into this incident determined that the chief cause of the accident was a lack of communication between the front and rear end, the people in charge of the train at the yard guestimating its weight.
There is literally a backbox on this train that records all outgoing and incoming messages none of them implied that the crew were aware of another unit being down and if they were they were damn smart enough to know better than to risk their life by going down the mountain with only two units with breaks when they knew they would barely be scrapping by with three.

  • @airsearch1

There is absolutely no excuse for these disasters. There should be laws in place to prevent the railroads from running trains through passes like this that are so insanely long and heavy. They should have to be MUCH shorter and there should be much more stringent maintenance requirements and stronger penalties for violations. I used to live out there by Cajon Pass and can remember how long those crazy trains were. I love trains but hate the railroad for their negligence. They claim to care about safety however, these disasters prove that money is more important to them than safety. If they can't do it safely, they shouldn't be allowed to run through there.

Later results on one Engine showed that it's Brakes weren't even operative, and yet it was used. I think that another one of the Engines had Brakes that were only partially working...or am I wrong? Add to that, that the Engineers didn't know the true weight of what was in the cars, that they were transporting.
This was a tragedy in the making, from the very start! What kind of a complete numbskull wouldn't check to see how much Tonnage (Weight), that they were carrying? They were underestimating the weight of each car, by at least a third!
The underestimating of the weight, and at least two of the Engines, one with partial braking power, and one with NO braking power, and WA-LA!!! One giant disaster, coming up!!!!!

Anything over 5% can only be climbed by specialized engines, and 3% is considered stupidly steep. Also, on your comment of the curving nature, the inner rail in a curve is slightly steeper so you have to judge on that. The official numbers are based on the centerline, but on particularly shape corner you might even have 0.1% more grade.
