Freight Train Descends Onto California's Cajon Pass After Derailing | Mayday | On The Move

- On 12 May 1989, a 69-car freight train goes out of control while descending from California's Cajon Pass. It derails in a residential neighborhood of San Bernardino after reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour (160 km/h). Two residents and two train crew members are killed in the initial crash. More than a week later, an underground gasoline pipeline, damaged by earth-moving equipment during the post-crash clean-up, ruptures and sparks a fire that kills another two people. Clerks in Mojave had greatly underestimated the train's weight, and it had been assembled without enough locomotives to provide adequate braking. Additionally, several of the engines' brakes were completely inoperative, but this information was not passed on to the crews.

Everyone’s talking about the wreck and stuff, but no one is acknowledging the fact that 8278 is a high hood and not a SD40T-2
This has always annoyed me!
You are wrong because I acknowledged it too. I was like "WHY IS IT HIGHHOOD AND WHY DOES IT HAVE THE SECOND ENGINE PAINT DESIGN ON IT INSTEAD OF THE NORMAL PAINT SD40T-2
@@elizabaker5370 oh, good to know I'm not alone!
It was probably the only available locomotive to lease for the filming.

Today is May 12, 2022. It is the anniversary of this disaster. It was exactly 33 years ago on May 12, 1989. May the survivors find peace and rest in peace to all the victims.
It’s crazier when one is born exactly six years since the accident (as was my case).

I absolutely hate hearing about people dying, or being killed. It's like somebody just kicked ya right in the guts! I wouldn't care if it was somebody that hated the very ground that God allows me to walk on, and wanted me dead. I'd still remember that, no matter who it is, we're all only human.
May 12th, 2023 now.
@@thomasoates3003 Good point. I noticed that myself earlier. Thank you very much.
Conductor: "Yeah we got a slight problem"
**literally doing 100 mph**
Some of the rail nuts are more concerned about historical accuracy rather than the story line and, the realization of the difficulties of recreating a major event involving heavy equipment.
I remember. I heard the noise from the fwy. I-15 and it was smoking moving way too fast!
This is one of those crashes where the crew was victims of circumstances beyond their control.
I still get the feeling, that at least one of the Railroad Crew aboard that Train on that fateful day, knew that at least one of the Engines didn't have operative brakes. I wonder how much else was known about the defective brakes on any of the other Engines, that is, if anybody else knew anything that should've been brought up, but wasn't. Think about it:If any of these four Engineers knew about any of the Engines having either defective, or no, Brakes, then that would constitute Criminal Liability!
I'm not pointing any fingers at any one (Or possibly more) of these four Engineers, but I still get the feeling, that someone knew about problems with the Brakes on those Engines, and yet decided to just "Keep silent".
@@ronaldshank7589 They said that even if all the brakes were working it would be a difficult trip down the mountain.
@@ronaldshank7589 You are pointing fingers with wild speculation based only on 'that's sus' , the inquiry into this incident determined that the chief cause of the accident was a lack of communication between the front and rear end, the people in charge of the train at the yard guestimating its weight.
There is literally a backbox on this train that records all outgoing and incoming messages none of them implied that the crew were aware of another unit being down and if they were they were damn smart enough to know better than to risk their life by going down the mountain with only two units with breaks when they knew they would barely be scrapping by with three.
There were two other run away trains on Cajon Pass and the San Bernardino area one in 1994 and the other in 1996.
You can find videos and information about them on the internet and other sources including RUclips.

As an ex engineer and speaking from experience ...You can't even imagine the mental stress these guys went through. I have had a couple close calls and you couldn't have driven a needle in my ass with a sledge hammer. It is a level of stress that most people can't fathom.
Thank you for this upload! : )

Lots of miss information about this wreck on the Internet. Inexperienced engineer, incorrect paper work on the train, deferred maintenance by Southern Pacific , all came together for the perfect storm.
There is absolutely no excuse for these disasters. There should be laws in place to prevent the railroads from running trains through passes like this that are so insanely long and heavy. They should have to be MUCH shorter and there should be much more stringent maintenance requirements and stronger penalties for violations. I used to live out there by Cajon Pass and can remember how long those crazy trains were. I love trains but hate the railroad for their negligence. They claim to care about safety however, these disasters prove that money is more important to them than safety. If they can't do it safely, they shouldn't be allowed to run through there.
You’ve said “aloud” buddy instead of “allowed”. I hope the people can hear & understand you now because in this case it makes sense.
@@tbone3972 Thanks for pointing that out, I was really tired when I commented.
I can't believe Chris Schaw survived!
I would've ask about the load. It just makes sense to know the weight that's pushing you.
You and I think it makes sense, but keep in mind, we are outsiders who are looking what happened after the fact.
Personally though, what I find strange is how southern pacific didn't have that policy of a full load from the beginning. Other rail companies did, hell, some as early as the bloody FORTIES.
Later results on one Engine showed that it's Brakes weren't even operative, and yet it was used. I think that another one of the Engines had Brakes that were only partially working...or am I wrong? Add to that, that the Engineers didn't know the true weight of what was in the cars, that they were transporting.
This was a tragedy in the making, from the very start! What kind of a complete numbskull wouldn't check to see how much Tonnage (Weight), that they were carrying? They were underestimating the weight of each car, by at least a third!
The underestimating of the weight, and at least two of the Engines, one with partial braking power, and one with NO braking power, and WA-LA!!! One giant disaster, coming up!!!!!
That's why now if the correct weight isn't provided, then they're to assume
That the train weighs maximum load.
And then you assign the corresponding # of units so as to have
More then enough braking power. But
The engineer made a catastrophic mis
calculations based on faulty information
So sad bless all

Well done fellows!!
These railroad paths must weave around all over the place, I don’t know a lot about trains but I do know that they cannot go up or down very steep grades. Only a few degrees of incline could cause the iron wheels to just spin on the metal tracks that they ride on. If anyone knows what the maximum grades are for trains please let me know. I’m honestly curious. Thank you
The biggest I know about in Canada is about 4%, I've only run on 2.4% myself which is already extremely steep for a train.
Anything over 5% can only be climbed by specialized engines, and 3% is considered stupidly steep. Also, on your comment of the curving nature, the inner rail in a curve is slightly steeper so you have to judge on that. The official numbers are based on the centerline, but on particularly shape corner you might even have 0.1% more grade.
3% is considered the maximum, and even that's exceptional. The steepest in the US was the Saluda Grade at 5.3%.
How about giving both units of measurement
Crappy communication. Crappy equipment, both train and pipeline. 6 lives and 18 homes lost.
Yes this was on the wonder channel.
By the way why is 7551 East not even not even it's locomotive appearance I thought 755 locomotive was an sd40-2 also where the five other engines
You'd think the animators could have at least put the engines in proper SP livery, SP NEVER had Armor Yellow engines. And they did not merge with UP until 1996.
I believe the runaway closeups were shot on a heritage railroad. Exterior shots on Cajon Pass appear to use several different trains (notice that the freight car formation keeps changing).
There was one unit painted in yellow over red colors. It was a heritage type

Ditto.

Totally.
Remind me not to move to Duffy Street! With two disasters inside of 2 weeks, first a Train Derailment, then a bursting Gasline, I wouldn't want to be within a Thousand Miles of that place!
By the way:Just what kind of an imbecile does a person have to be, to have housing development right beside the outer curve of a Railroad Track like that? Man-Rhat's like staring Death right in the face, and saying:"Come on! I dare you to kill me!
Whaddya think that Death is going to do, back off? No, Sir! He's always gonna getcha, one way or another!!!

Yeah, and even if it was recorded off an old VHS tape, the quality would not look so great. Not to mention that the lighting would be way off.
Through the tragedy those disasters bring it is a way to make them safer
Not even close...
How come you didn't make any part 2 or even three because there is two more wrecks basically number one is the San Bernardino disaster number two is Santa Fe train crashes into Union Pacific train and number three Santa Fe train becomes a runaway and just like 7551 East crashes into a dry Creek bed not like 7551 East I know it's not exactly but basically that's what 7551 East
I thought it decended, then derailed?
that high hood wasn't on the train....it was used for the film
Too bad they didn’t have an SD40T-2 to use. Oh well, they had to use something. Anyway, if I’m not mistaken, the high hood might’ve been the same one that is located at a railroad museum in Portola. It might’ve been the same one that has been used for filming. Either that, or they used a different high hood I dunno.

Even if the hand breaks were applied, it still wouldn’t help because of how heavy the train was.

The Bible says Jesus is the only way to eternal life. He's the only way to a relationship with God.
Salvation is through Jesus because He died on the cross and then rose from the dead.
We just need to receive Him as our Lord and receive what He did for us on the cross by asking Him into our lives and repenting of sin.
Funny how you guys never talk about all the messed up things the bible says, huh.
Yahweh is actually evil and is actually the cause of many many evil things all through out the universe !
