  • The human zoo is a concept that surfaces far too often in today’s world. This derogatory term is generally associated with exploitative and unethical practices, whereby humans are put on display for entertainment purposes. Whilst the circuses and cabarets that once featured as ‘human zoos’ may no longer be prominent events, demeaning public displays of people, usually labelled as ‘primitive’ or ‘natural’, still occur around the world today; resulting in a lasting legacy of the concept of the ‘human zoo’.
But what does this all mean? In this video I will tell you what exactly is meant by the term ‘human zoo’ and explain why it is so bad. I will discuss the origins and histories of human zoos around the world and I will discuss whether indeed ‘human zoos’ continue to exist today.

Years ago I had the opportunity to teach in Kunming, Yunnan Province in China. There was and still is an attraction that is described as a Minority Village that displays the culture of some of the various ethnic minorities. This is a strategy to attract both domestic and international tourists. This is a comment from a visitor: Yunnan ethnic villages gather 25 ethnic minority villages in Yunnan, including the main ethnic villages of Yunnan, Bai, Yi, Miao, Jingpo, Yi, Hani, Naxi, Yi and Dulong. The villagers there have their own ethnic cultures, and the villagers are very enthusiastic and simple. Every year Yunnan's famous water-splashing festival will also be held there, and there will be a large number of ethnic minority festivals. The ethnic village of Yunnan can watch the ethnic singing and dancing performances of Yunnan ethnic groups, which are wonderful, rich expression, flexible body and graceful dances, and make people feel good. I did visit with my students and found it quite concerning at a number of levels. Is is a Human Zoo? I am not so sure. Is is however commodifying culture, I believe it is.

I am a filmmaker specializing in authenthic cultural heritage productions. While many of the cultural villages in existance today are allegedly designed in collaboration with the tribes, and the accompanying display of artefacts with ethnographic descriptions aims to promote the exhibition as a respectful experience of other cultures, to me, the term 'human zoo' still applies.
Even worse, asked to wear sacred masks traditionally reserved for very special occassions, expected to perform short versions of dances that are traditionally part of deeply spiritual ceremonies - we are motivating and incentivizing the indigenous people to further dilute and sell out their traditions. It feels very, very wrong!!
The tribal youth is easy to manipulate into participation, particularly in more remote areas where other sources of income are rare. But I wonder how the elders as gardians of the traditional ways feel and whether they try to resist the establishment of such villages. Any chance you may have some insights? I tried to find some videos or written articles that prove my assumptions correct but most of these places are run by governments that likely silence any form of disagreement, so my search was not successful so far.

Interesting view... I believe its based on the perspective of how one looks at the concept. Many societies, I would say are enslaved in various way. Christians would say that all those who are not Christlike are enslaved to Lucifer ( Satan) and vice versa. There are some who would try to keep the idea of "human zoo", which I believe is inhumane, distasteful if people are deliberately doing so, while others may say that they are sharing their cultural practices with others to see and possibly join with. At the end of it, it is the perspective that one views the situation and hopefully, people are focusing on the positives, being respectful and considerate of all human beings moving into this new era the world is in.
