So if you listen closely to "OMORI", you'll notice that the song starts off with just the violin and nothing else. But as you get around 45 seconds to a minute in, if you use headphones, you can start to make out other faint sounds fading in the background and it gets progressively "worse" as the song goes on. Basically, OMORI and OMORI - Alter are used in the game's final battle in the true route, and as the battle progresses, it gets harder and more difficult. The violin represents the Protagonist, and the distorted sounds represent the antagonist and the more the Protagonist pushes, the harder the Antagonist pushes back, until one pivotal point in the battle when the antagonist yells something that really hurts and hits _hard_ and that's when the song changes to OMORI - Alter immediately. The battle gets MUCH more difficult after that, as the boss keeps inflicting the "Afraid" status on you which interrupts your attempts to use special attacks and does heavy damage. You can heal and remove the Afraid status, but only a certain number of times. And if you survive this phase of the battle? The boss kills you outright on the next. You can't defeat this boss, at least not with conventional means.
29:51 "It's almost as if I can hear the drums talking." Well... (MAJOR OMORI SPOILERS AHEAD) I remember seeing theories in the fandom about the distortion being Mari yelling at Sunny, presumably after Sunny threw the violin. The distortion represents how the details are unclear to Sunny, but the intensity of it all shows how Sunny never forgot Mari yelling at him. I personally think I can make out Mari saying "SUNNY, STOP IT!" around the midpoint of the song. Just this little detail adds so much weight and meaning to the song. I personally just love to think of it that way.
It wasn't a smart thing to do from Mari to yell at Sunny in that situation, she and the others(even their parents)had already put too much pressure on him for a long time without realizing what he really wanted...She also had an injured knee...
And he wasn't even gonna do anything, he was gonna run away bcuz she was overwhelming him. But she blocked his way telling him I'm not finished talking, so ofc, in somewhat defense, and absent thought he pushed her leading to the accident. He also felt so confused on why she's yelling at him when he indured so much to have her have this, that he was frustrated she can't undertand he's just not good enough for her standards. 30:05 Imagine this is Sunny playing the violin alone against the overwhelming negative presence that is Omori.... Knowing he cannot win alone, but knowing he has to.
Omori is arguably one of the most heartrenching and anxiety-enducing game I ever played in my life... The way it conveys many different emotions through its music is actually surreal. I remember when I first heard the "Omori" and "Omori Alter" Tracks in-game, it made me feel as if I was about to suffer from a panic attack due to the sheer sadness, unease and most importantly anxiety it conveyed, that coupled with the context of it all... Yeah, I was NOT alright during that fight. And Keep in mind, I'm someone who always struggled with anxiety throughout my life, and that part of the game had me on the verge of tears and panic. It triggered the same "symptoms" and "feelings" that used to be commonplace when I was younger. Cold sweats feeling like frostbites, chills running down your very spine and soul, your mind gradually getting overwhelmed by godawful emotions and thought... Omori knew EXACTLY how to trigger them, no other games managed to do that with me. And despite that, I will NEVER forget the time I've spent with this game, for as unpleasant as it was during the "Real Life" moments, it's an experience I'm gonna cherrish for the rest of my days.
yeah, going through the omori fight and the phobia fights as someone with anxiety is a wild thing. i remember the music genuinely making me really anxious, (still definitely does lol) but breathing with sunny whenever he does his skills really helped. it really felt EXACTLY like warding off a panic attack without actually doing so. ive never had that type of experience with a game portraying anxiety but damn, was it awesome.
During the Omori fight the song alone made me cry- like I couldn't even hold it in. It is so impressive to me how the emotional tone of that song is so perfectly conveyed The fact that it just keeps going and going- the progression (for lack of better term) just keeps going and going, just like Omori kept berating and berating.
this is my first video i've seen from you, and i don't usually comment but i just wanna say - i LOVE your reaction to the Omori soundtracks. i appreciate what you have to say about the song Omori - ALTER , usually people kind of gloss over it because it's not upbeat and it loops for ages , but like you said, it feels HEAVY and like something is changing, and im so glad you worded it in a way i didn't know how. also, the way you're just able to play the songs by ear?!! amazing.
Okay, I know that this was 5 months ago, but I love all of this. He's hitting his guesses right on the mark sometimes and it's so amazing to hear his interpretation of the Omori soundtrack. I will say, my favorite (as of now, since I haven't finished the vid yet) "cover," if I can call it that lol, is It Means Everything. It's such a fantastic song on its own, but I feel like the violin makes it EVEN BETTER! Keep up the good work!
So My Time is very interesting because of the contrast of the songs tone and what it's actually about. The hints are in the music still especially with the ever descending chords and some of the unique sounds used at the drop of the edm music (bang). Definitely threw me through a loop the first time I heard it haha.
Man, I love the soundtrack of Omori dearly but I cannot pick one specific song that you should cover!! All of the little instrumental bits you add in just enhance things so much, ideally it's every track!! I'm not very music literate, but whenever you add your violin to a song it just feels like it has an extra layer of depth that is difficult to replicate - all this to say, keep doing what you're doing, and keep having fun listening to bangin' music! (it goes without saying that the final duet piece is incredibly beautiful both in and out of in-game context - it is a genuine tear jerker every time, and the way that it all ties back into the lonesome title theme is just amazing)
It was so wonderful to hear the opinion of a talented composer like yourself put WORDS to this… I really enjoyed watching this video and think you really nailed it. Thanks for making this video…!! 🎻 🎶👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The soundtrack of this game is incredibly brilliant- I could go on for so long about it. This video was super informative and fun seeing an actual musician put it into words why the songs have the effects they do- what makes the emotion of each song so effective.
I think the song "glade" is really special. The sound of a piano pedal is supposed to convey the feeling of exposure, since it's also not that loud and every other song in the ost feels so compressed compared to that one.
First video of yours and I just had to subscribe afterwards. Love love love your energy, how you close your eyes to focus on what feelings and emotions the pieces evoke out of you rather than purely analysing its composition, your mindblowing talent and ability to improvise from ear and create masterful pieces on top of the soundtrack that complements it so well, your freakishly spot-on analysis skills of the pieces that show you've definitely been around a while in your field and know what you're talking about, and your ability to appreciate other artful pieces of work, which I as a lifelong Ghibli and Joe Hisaishi admirer deeply respect and couldn't help but feel excited over the mutual feelings. And one more point to be made about OMORI -- its sound design... the music, and even ambience that's not listed in the OST... is used in the game to depict the protagonist's mental state. Emotions, fears, anxiety, and even times when he's lost in his own little world, the sound design is conveying what's happening in his mind at all times. There's this one scene in the game where he's having dinner with his friends and you can hear this soft droning sound with sounds of silverware clinking in the background, and suddenly, someone says something surprising, and the droning ambience *immediately* stops but the clinking of utensils continues... such attention to detail is one of the reasons I've always loved that game.
