Not to be that guy, but that's actually the hungarian major scale, since you've also got a minor 3rd alongside the major 3rd and no second. That's a cool ass scale, insane flavor!

What’s funny is that Josh doesn’t even necessarily think of it as a scale. If you watch his Guitar Moves interview it’s more of a “sometimes I like to add this note for a dark/silly curtsy/cabaret vibe” and some patterns he came up with. One thing I love about not starting out as a classically-trained musician - every newly-found note/riff is an adventurous little discovery that paints its own vibe. As opposed to being taught methodically and your teacher like, “And now the 4th mode of the major scale is called Lydian, with its characteristic sharp 4.” One feels like school, the other feels like you’re pioneering a new musical landscape. 😂

Goddam this attitude pisses me off so much. It's fine if you just play guitar in your bedroom, but the point of knowing the names of things is so you can communicate about it with other people. One time I was in a band with someone who didn't know what a bar was. He was teaching us a song he wrote and we asked him how long a section was, and he said "let's work out a hand signal!" and got mad at us when we asked him to just figure out the number, like we weren't letting him feel special. Guy just plays by himself now.

I often wondered how qotsa created such a good atmosphere on their songs and albums. It’s like a dark circus had a baby with a Stephen king novel. I’m pretty certain this scale has a lot to do with it. 🎸🎵
