I can always use these events as an accurate long range weather forecast - on the night of the Great Conjunction it will be solid cloud, horizon to horizon.
You to eh? There's an eclipse in north Africa later this decade, a really good one, totality over 6 minutes near Luxor. Now Luxor is a famously hot and sunny place but if you hear on the news that it was cloudy there on the day then you can be quite certain that I made it to the event.
I'm happy i stumbled on this video, i see Saturn and Jupiter every night and noticed they're getting closer but didn't realise they'll be so close and what rare moment this will be. Good work
If these two planets are visible in the night sky in southern hemisphere for months, then what's new about the conjunction of 21st? I mean, we see the planets and it means they're close to us and will just align in that day, why people make conspirancy theories about that day? LOL this happens like every 20 years and it occured again back in the middle ages and 17th century.
I notice this event several months ago when playing with Stellarium. I realize it is all simple mathematics, but whether it be a sunrise, an ISS flyover, or a once in 400 year conjunction, it never ceases to astound me how a prediction so much earlier can come to past
Not necessarily in Exeter though.. We've had some great clear blue skies during the day here. So it's feasible there could be some clear skies at night at just the right time.
Hey, Im in belgium and i see it every evening when the sky is clear. Even mars is visible at the same time. You can also see venus in the early morning.
I swear if I miss this event... Update: In the US, the forecast shows that it will be mostly clear on the 21st. On the 22nd, it will be fully clear. This means that people in the US have a chance of seeing the alignment, and this means that I can finally image the planets (video of it coming soon).
First and most important condition is clear skies. By the look of it, at least where I live, it will be cloudy or hazy or both. I've missed ALL events this year because of no visibility. ALL of them.
That was a very informative video. We will try to see it with binoculars. I’ve been photographing the two planets all summer so it will be great to see them so close together.
With high school astronomy and space-probe curiosity, i am rarely able to understand the rarified explanations offered of various phenonmena. This is one time I did. Thanks for the clear description and visuals.
Thank you. I forgot to check how high it would be in the sky. I live 69 degrees north in Norway, so it is hopeless. I will then update my calendar with notes about that there will be attempts to live stream it. I want to show a kid this.
I live in Hertfordshire and was able to observe Jupiter and Saturn for forty-five minutes, low in the horizon from the high ground to the north of Watton-at-Stone on Sunday evening from 17:30. Mars was also clearly visible by eye and the whole made a little better by a cheap old pair of 10 x 25 binoculars. Thanks.
They've been very bright and close to each other for much of the evening since the spring here in Canada. I was pointing them out to the kids all summer, along with Mars which is also very close to earth in its orbit right now.
Thank you for sharing this upcoming planetary event, your diagrams and animations demonstrate the spatial aspects of the conjunction very effectively. CHeers
Excellent info piece! As an amateur astronomer myself, I can endorse all that was said here. Only thing I might add, which it really wasn't up to U. of Exeter to say, is that if you're looking for a livestream, and Exeter is clouded out, there will surely be other livestreams in the world with clear skies. But don't miss the chance to see it in person, if you can! Fred
It is a great beautiful animation for any layman to understand how Jupiter and Saturn align with each other in a particular line of sight. Have not seen any other work depicting this concept so clearly so far. Thanks for bringing this out. In our educational channel as well, my little son and I have posted a general awareness quiz covering Dec 2020 events including this great conjunction. Interested ones can watch our works as well. It is great to be on this learn and share youtube platform where we can all form a like minded continuous-learning community around us. Our best wishes to this channel as well.

Thank you, Dr. Bates. And thank you for your animations of star and star cluster formation. I have used them (with attribution) in several presentations I have made over the years for my astronomy club. In California, our window of opportunity on the 21st will include Ganymede in transit across Jupiter's disk. Ganymede's shadow will begin transiting when Jupiter is just above the horizon so we will probably miss that part. I still need to check other nights either side of the 21st for other planet and shadow transits. With the UK eight hours ahead of us, your window of opportunity on the 21st occurs before the transit. I didn't check other nights, but you will probably have some planet or shadow transit worth catching.
Thanks (animations -- always great to hear of people using them! ), and thanks for the idea about shadows from Jupiter's moons. Will have to check over the next few nights from the UK's point of view.

We have seen Jupiter and Saturn conjunct in our skies many times However, this one coming up, will have far ranging implications. I have been waiting for this specific conjunction, since the 1990's, and have been anticipating this Conjunction ever since, for a double or triple Conjunction has been suggested in this instance. Very similiar aspects occurred when Christ Jesus was born! Could this mean, that Christ Jesus is coming for His Church? Whatever comes, you best be holding on to your Hat, so to speak! Blessings to All!!! It isn't Just about Astronomy!!!
I think when people say "I won't even be alive by then", they don't recognize that people who haven't even been born yet could someday benefit from knowledge we pass down. If the oldest living people are around 115 years old, that means 1905 or 1915 really wasn't that long ago in my opinion. John McCain's mom is still alive for example and she was middle aged during Vietnam yet people speak about the 70s like it was another era.
I can always use these events as an accurate long range weather forecast - on the night of the Great Conjunction it will be solid cloud, horizon to horizon.
that is the most accurate weather prediction I have ever seen, ever.

Same in the north, I’m in Ireland and they’ve been in the sky ~5 months

Yes, same here in Texas. Saturn and Jupiter in the west, Mars in the east. No stars visible in my location so they really stand out.
Yes but separate. On the 21 the line is very prevalent
I wish things like this made mainstream news! I would’ve missed the whole thing!
It’s not the purpose of the news to report ‘Real’ events
you can watch the news and be misinformed or not and be uninformed. I much prefer the latter. I seem to remain well informed none the less.
I love how the great conjunction will happen on winter solstice! What a great show in the sky to celebrate the balance of the Force!
