The contractors for this endeavor were Pancrazio Aucello and Salvatore Siciliano. The men cut the stone and the young boys would haul it from the limestone quarry at the end of Madison Avenue. Aucello went from door to door not just in Pleasantville, but in other towns, seeking donations for the church.
Mr, Aucello was instrumental in obtaining a $1,000 loan from Dominicans in New York City for the purchase of lumber and to pay a carpenter In the spring of 1918 Our Lady of Pompeii, a true community effort, was dedicated. The church became a focal point in the lives of the community members. In, 1925 a hall was added so that religious instruction could take place there.
@lenandmercy The Church, Our Lady of Pompeii, came into being, because of a vow made by Father Mercier. He was in Italy when the United States entered World War I. Since he was not a citizen, he had little hope of getting back, He made a promise to our Lady of Pompeii that if he got back to America, he would build a church in her name. Father Mercier kept his promise.
Sewing was also taught to girls in the hall. The church was also responsible for the religious processions through the streets. Source: The History of the Sherman Park Neighborhood in Pleasantville posted:June 1st, 2007 By: Delores Tavkar
Mother Rose Lathrop, daughter of poet Nathaniel Hawthorne and foundress of the Sisters of Rosary Hill in Hawthorne, took an anonymous gift of $400, bought a 100' x 100' plot of land on the corner of Garrigan and Saratoga Avenues, and presented it to Father Mercier to build a church. The community began to work on the church. After laboring a full day at their regular jobs, neighborhood stone cutters, masons and other workers spent evenings and weekends building their church.
I would've hoped that for such an important video posted that Mother Cabrini's surname would be spelled correctly. It's now six years since the posting and it's apparently still misspelled.
I go to that school and yes it is connected with the school. The door is always locked that leads to the classrooms
