(Isaiah 7:10-14)
Introduction
Emmanuel, the Wonder Child
1. The Wonder of the Virgin Birth
2. The Wonder of His Salvation
3. The Wonder of His Presence
The Wonder of the Virgin Birth:
Christmas is not just about Christ was born, but How Christ was born
• Jesus did not have a natural birth
• If He had a natural birth, He couldn’t be our Saviour, but just one among us
• He would have been just another sinner;
• His death on the Cross wouldn’t bring any impact on us because He died as a sinner
So, How Christ was born-Isaiah 7:14:
• Ahaz, the king of Judah, was a disobedient king, who wanted to have an alliance with Assyria, the Super Power of those days, which God did not favor.
• The alliance he wanted was against the Northern Kingdom, Israel, as Israel had an alliance with Syria against Judah, the Southern Kingdom.
• God wanted Ahaz to trust in Him.
• God sent the prophet Isaiah with this request, and told Ahaz ask God a sign for His assurance of support.
• Ahaz was so proud, and replied, I don’t need any sign from God.
• To this, God replied through Isaiah that I will give to His people the sign of the Virgin Birth of the Messiah (v 14) that He would be the Savior of His people.
• The Hebrew word “almah” with definite article refers to “the virgin woman”, the mother of Jesus as Matthew recorded this at the birth of the Messiah (Matthew 1:23).
• The Greek word for virgin is “Parthenos” used by the Septuagint translation and Matthew.
The Circumstances of the Virgin Birth (Matthew 1:18-25)
The Gospel writer Matthew, by the superintend of God, records for us that Joseph was kept away from the betrothed Mary without having any physical intimacy with her.
• For the Jewish custom, at the betrothal, the marriage vows were pronounced, and hence a legal divorce be required for separation.
• But the husband would be kept away from the woman for one year to make sure that the woman is a virgin.
• So it was the waiting period for Joseph.
But few important things happens here:
1. Joseph was a just man (v 19)
2. He thought of having a private divorce (v 19)
3. Then the announcement of the angel of God-she is conceived of the Holy Spirit (v 20)
4. Angel also told him take Mary as your wife
5. But Joseph did not have any physical relationship with her until the baby was born (v 25)
Herein is the miracle-incarnation and the virgin birth
• Seed of the woman-God became man to identify with man and to become his substitute
• At the same time, God-Man, who knew no sin
The Necessity of the Virgin Birth (1 Corinthians 15:21-22)
Sin is not an act, but it is a condition, which man inherited through the birth from Adam-original sin.
But in Christ, as He was of the Holy Spirit, there was no inherent sin in Him.
• A sinner can never be our savior
• Salvation can never come through a man’s seed, but by the Seed of God-hence the Holy Spirit
• Only God can save us, hence the miracle of the virgin birth and incarnation.
The Apostle Paul says in 1 Cor 15:21-22, that in first Adam all die, but in Second Adam, Christ, all alive.
• Romans 5:12-24
The Blessings of the Virgin Birth
1. Sacredness of our salvation
2. Security of our salvation
