  • Voters in Malaysia have thrown the ruling coalition from power for the first time since independence 61 years ago.
    The architect of the opposition's upset win is the veteran politician who made the ruling alliance a formidable force during his 22 years as Prime Minister.
    Mahathir Mohamad returned to active politics two years ago in an unusual role for him.
    As an opposition leader, he accused Prime Minister Najib Razak of stealing millions of dollars in government funds.
    And he's channeled the anger of millions of Malaysians about the rising cost of living and corruption into his latest electoral success - two months before his 93rd birthday.
    Presenter: Mohammed Jamjoom.
    Guests:
    Oh Ei Sun - Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute in Malaysia & former political secretary to Najib Razak
    Bridget Welsh - Associate Professor, John Cabot University
    Fung Siu - Asia Economist Intelligence Unit

      Saif Shaikh we can't bear to handle 5 years of Najib as our leader anymore. Tun Mahathir is the only reliable choice we have😢He realises that he's old too. Therefore, he said that he will try to fix Malaysia for a year or two before passing it to another younger qualified leader.

      Luqman there is no clean politic throughout entire world. See it this way mahathir took 20 cent and najib 1$. Mahathir empower Malaysian company and took 20 cent and najib instead of doing same as Mahathir he rather take fast track by selling all national asset and robbing people's money. Simple.

    • @hariewin7289
      @hariewin7289 6 лет назад +16

      Luqman The fact that Dr M was building the country and took a few cents,i don't mind,he deserve it. But najib on the other hand , he is destroying the country and taking lots of notes with him. :)

    • @najmi9497
      @najmi9497 6 лет назад +9

      Luqman his son not steal anything.M gives his son so many contracts to run and he work for that billions. not like N just transfer billions to bank account. that is different.

    • @ruflig
      @ruflig 6 лет назад +2

      Luqman they are different.. Even they havr corruption during their era.. They were not making their people suffering like najib. Najib steal, sell our country to outside country at the same time making his people suffering

    Congrats PM Mahathir and for all Malaysian. What an amazing historic event.
    I am a proud Malaysian living and working in Chicago IL USA. I left Malaysia 2003 when Tun Mahathir was still the PM then. Yet I couldn't resist but to add a funny joke. Imagine if I had an accident which resulted me being in a coma for 15 years. Then finally awaken today and was told that a new elected Opposition leader had won the 2018 election and that he is none other than Tun Mahathir himself. I might be shocked right back into another coma. :)

I'm not convinced that scrapping GST is a good idea at all, but hopefully that'll work itself out. Governments should not spend more than they receive in tax - follow Singapore's lead on that, not Britain's.

The wage is low. Comparing to the rising cost of living. Fung Siu should have gone to the ground and do some real assesment instead of looking at chart.

    A magnificent political strategist and the world's oldest PM(not sure he appreciate that). He embodied a politician who truly love his country and people. His don't - mess-with-my-country(some called dictatorship) approach applied to both his previous UMNO party members(his no confidence vote led to the resignation of the 5th PM who's from UMNO) as well as oppositions. His current coalition party members consists of some strong critics and opponents of his previous administration and they recognised a great man who can lead them into a historical political era. The only man that can command some respect and instil fear to the ex leadership. No one will put himself, at 92yrs old, in a tiresome, gigantic effort to topple a traditionally strong government as well as solving all the mess left behind, unless he truly have his country in his heart. Imho... A hero. The best son of Malaysia and probably Asia.

      ...Okay...But you do remember that the current world fascism were created by Putin? And our country were dancing to the tune of several fascists countries like Turkey (also manipulated by Putin) especially the last few years...
      Several Turkish citizens that came for asylum and Najis basically gave them to be imprisoned or killed.

    • @EmeraldMara85

      That was in the past for Germany, they are actually far more protective about equality these days. You really have to catch up with world history because that's like WW2 old news.
      These days its the Putin regime especially when it comes to online propoganda at making various countries into unstable countries. America, France, Turkey, Japan, Middle East...they have been busy making far too accounts at influencing elections, not just online...actual investments into various businesses and stocks of media, games (recent ones are the suspicious accounts at Daybreak, developers of Everquest) and of course politicians like Donald Trump (he is so neck in deep with them for quite a long while, as early as 2000s). Ex: 1 such 'influencer' are Wikileaks. Julian Assange has been crazy for awhile now which is why his Wikileaks former staff have been criticizing him especially when journalists and politicians have been assassinated by the Kremlin (Putin's lackeys) but he does nothing to cover on them (remember the recent poisoning cases on former spies in the news? Also nothing). In fact, he's in Russia right now...his various media projects were financially supported by Kremlin. JA even tried to influence Edward Snowden(A source for US corruption) to come to Russia, only for ES to say no politely and for JA to threaten him. Its all very bizarre. You can see his true colors on his own Twitter account (at both his personal and Wikileaks twitters) including other disgusting things...(the man has ran from several rape charges so his view on women are on the extreme side).
      I hope that this very condense version(there's a lot more) about Russia's influences will make you seek out more info about this former spy Putin (he was part of their elites in KGB when it comes to gathering intelligence).

      Please stop worrying about what westerners think. You need to focus on you and your country. By the way, Europe is NOT crumbling as you claim. You have a very superficial knowledge of Europe, similar to what some Europeans have of Malaysia. Anybody can comment on any country. Diverse views make us stronger. Confident people don't worry about the opinions of others. especially foreigners. Peace, my friend.

    Actually I think this series of scandals might be a blessing in disguise to Malaysia. I am in my thirties and I have never seen Malaysia so united before. Never felt patriotic or proud of my country besides the food but for once I actually had goosebumps and I teared when PH won. Tun M has earned my utmost respect for being able to not only have the courage to admit his mistake, but stand so firmly with us to fix his mistakes and the mess of another. At this age, don't tell me he does this for power or money or fame. 10000% love for Malaysia right there. SALUTE! Hidup Malaysia!!

      I read most of readers' comments with a laugh ! Have to say none of them was said with any seriousness, relevance and life experiences living in Malaysia in the Mahatir years. I have to state at the outset that he is not great or bad; Mahatir is just your ordinary politician but he steered Malaysia along the path of least resistance and as things turned out in later years, proved the wrong one; that said Malaysia did not progress in the way that Singapore did. On all counts Malaysia was endowed with resources 100s of times more than Singapore and by that statement alone Malaysia if done right will today be 100s of times better off than Singapore but it is not. Let us play the "what if" game; what if Lee Kuan Yew was PM instead of Mahatir ? What if Malaysia did not have the Bumiputra Policy (have to say impossible); what if Bahasa did not remove other languages from Malaysian school curriculum ? What if the Mahatir Government had adhered to the Malaysian Constitutional provision that provided for the appointment of 1 in 4 non malay to the civil service and same to all government services, police, army, health care teaching staff and every government services. What if education is allowed to florish in many diferent languages ? There are lots more "what if" and Mahatir EXCLUDED ALL NON MALAYS FROM PARTICIPATION as provided under the Constitution.
      IF MAHATIR WAS A GREAT LEADER MALAYSIA WILL HAVE SINGAPORE AS A CONSTITUENT STATE ! Will you have Singapore back into Malaysia ? Of course you will say NO !

As it turns out, she correctly predicted Mahathir's actions against corruption and she was well informed about council of elders.
