30 years old. This gem had to fight against the likes of China in Your Hand, Ballerina Girl, Celebration, Never Gonna Give You Up, La Isla Bonita and Respectable at the time.
I belief it's stood the test of time far better than any of the 50 best-selling UK singles of 1987.

Of the aforementioned songs,Ballerina Girl was the one in the chart at the same time (late January and early February 1987) as Trampolene. Respectable and La Isla Bonita were chart toppers in the spring, while Rick Astley burst onto the scene with Never Going to Give You Up in the later half of the summer. China in Your Hand, which was T'Pau's second hit straight after Heart and Soul, reached the summit late on in the year, which ended with the Pet Shop Boys holding off the Pogues & Kirsty MacColl for Christmas Number 1.

The week Trampolene, another fine Cope single and the follow-up to the previous autumn's Top 20 hit World Shut Your Mouth, peaked on the chart the Top 10 was as follows:
      1 (2) I Knew You Were Waiting For Me - George Michael & Aretha Franklin; 2 (7) Heartache - Pepsi & Shirlie; 3 (1) Jack Your Body - Steve "Silk" Hurley; 4 (10) Almaz - Randy Crawford; 5 (8) Down to Earth - Curiosity Killed the Cat; 6 (3) C'est La Vie - Robbie Nevil; 7 (15) I Love My Radio - Taffy; 8 (5) No More the Fool - Elkie Brooks; 9 (9) Surrender - Swing Out Sister; 10 (4) Is This Love? - Alison Moyet

I knew it was not a dream. It was a faint memory. I remember seeing a Saab 96 in a music video on MTV. Few years ago. Maybe 30? I found it now. My first car was a Saab 96. Back in 1987. I think I need to get one for myself before I grow too old.

Back in the booooring 80ies this was the first song that gave mie confidence and showed me that not everything was lost. This song captures all the glory of Pop Music... from the promising intro to the ecstatic guitar riff right till the climactic end... once its over, I always want to listen to it again and again!

I saw Julian Cope - post Teardrop Explodes - play at Glastonbury in 1986 (or it may have been 1987) - he was excellent on stage. I always remember this track being showcased then from the album Saint Julian.

I jumped onstage with him ( uninvited I may add) at one of his gigs and sang the opening lines of 'Bandys first Jump' and instead of kicking me off he actually backed me on his guitar. I still have the recording. Saw him twice solo and and hung out with him in both occasions. An absolutely lovely nutter eccentric to the core but down to Earth big time and very very funny. If you haven't read his Autobiography "Head on" you haven't lived. It's manically hysterically funny and one of the best music books I've ever read

  • @Noodles37UK

Cope can say what he likes about this album. The bottom line is that even though I completely sympathise with his underground stance on music, this album is an utter gem of pop and aggression, color and joy. The fact he puts in a dark song like A Crack In The Clouds tops it all for me. My all time favorite track is Laughing Boy BTW : )
