    I used to go to Erols every Friday night with my dad and brother. The fun was not finding what you came for, then spending an hour arguing the merits of a replacement. Beautiful memories.

    I'm 27. I remember one of these in Silver Spring, MD (on the corner of Georgia Ave and Burlington Ave) and one in Langley Park (in a shopping center, off University Blvd). My parents would rent me things from there all the time (I distinctly remember a VHS of Pee Wee's Playhouse and a couple other kid shows).

    Our local one was inside a Peoples Drug, and it had a pretty damn good selection despite only taking up a small corner of the place. Still have a few of their NES games from when they closed up shop.
    Also had a really nice place up in Olney, MD near (what it was at the time anyway) Stained Glass Pub Too. Loved going to that one.

    I remember my parents would send my brother and I to Erols on a Friday after school to get movies for the weekend. If it was a new movie and it was out sometimes we could wait until the movie was returned and it was like a get accomplishment if the new movie we were waiting for came in. Great memories.

    Erols Video was our first video store we rented from when my family got our first VCR in 1986.I was Owings Mills MD,right next to the Giant Foods store.

    I worked at Erol's Video in Chicago, IL. My store was located at 59th and Western next door to the Radio Shack. I stayed with the company until it closed and became West Coast Video and later Blockbuster Video.

    I remember my dad bought me a small Sony Trinitron TV from the Erol’s in Glen Burnie MD around 1986. It was in my bedroom with a VCR and an antenna. That little sucker lasted me until around 2009 when I gave it away. It went with me to my small apartment where everyone was bitching about how small it was and I need a “real” TV.. when I moved into a house, it was really unusable because of the small size. I am just amazed that the thing worked for so long. They don’t make them like that anymore.. oh yeah- that vcr is in the attic.

      When I needed a DVD player last year, i bought a used Sony one on EBay for $20 with remote, I bought another one for the bedroom, lasted longer that the other cheap one only for a month.

    I remember as a kid in the mid 80s we used to rent movies from an Erol's in Ellicott City, MD. I remember their bags and the big red boxes they used to keep their movies in.

    I worked at Erol's when I was in my early 20s back in the late 80s. it was a northern va store. Erol came into the store I had no idea who he was I asked him if I could help him as he was randomly walking around he then told me he was Erol, he had a low grumbly kind of voice. I remember the manager telling me how he complemented my customer service later that night. I also remember my coworkers used to hide the new releases for themselves to check out later that night, like robocop. even though I was poor it was a fun time.

    We straight had Beta and my father would take us to the Erols in Langley Park from time to time to rent movies and they were always Police Academy movies or other clean comedies. And once we rented Throw Mama From the Train.....he heard bad things... he came out of his room and pushed stop! That was a rap! I hated when VHS took over because we only had Beta. :-(

    Unbelievably, Erol's made it to my native country (Chile) and my dad used to take me to rent movies as a child. I was a huge fan of Batman (1988) and rented it every time I could. :D

      Unbelievably, the Chilean "Errol's" (with two R's) was a mere copycat of "Erol's" (with one R). They even copied the same logo without respecting copyrights LOL en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erol%27s

    Kind of smiling at the comment about Erol getting "run out of the market". I guess you could say that if you call getting paid $40M by Blockbuster going out of business.

    • @rockvilleraven
      @rockvilleraven 9 лет назад +1

      BrooksnLaura Tuck I remember a mom and pop competitor to Blockbuster in DC when there was the baseball expansion derby of 1990. That said if you rent from them your hurting their chances of getting baseball in the Nations Capital because Blockbuster's CEO Wayne Huiznega got the Florida Marlins. The truth was Washington was still views as a graveyard for the sport and the only way they would have gotten a team is if there was a rich minority owner like Robert Johnson leading the effort.

    • @smoothvirus
      @smoothvirus 5 лет назад

      AFAIK There wasn't any connection between Luskins and Erol's other than they both operated in the DMV. Luskin's went on to become The Big Screen Store which is still in business and Erol's became Erol's Unlimited Internet for a while before they got bought out by a different ISP.

    • @rockvilleraven

      Erols Video was owned by Hungarian Immigrant Erol Orhan. They were only general interest DC Video store chain to charge for membership, unlike the mom and pop ones. When Blockbuster came to the area, they forced him to drop the charges, later they bought him out and he went to the Dial Up ISP business, later that was sold to RCN.

    • @davidt.5883
      @davidt.5883 8 лет назад +1

      Erol was from Turkey. Everyone charged membership in DC. Erol sold the stores for $40 million in 1990.
