Using a de-matting comb on your dog before having them groomed is a good idea. A common complaint of Malshi Dog owners is that their groomer tends to shave them bald because of matted hair.
A tip if you are trying to comb out matts. Brush the hair to the left or right (sideways) to help separate the matts. Matts pull apart on Shih Tzus easier by brushing this way first, then brush the ends of the hair before brushing from the roots downward. I go back and forth between these variations to work the hair apart and free it. I don't just brush from the top, but also turn the brush around so the bristles are facing me and then brush underneath the hair which also helps get it apart. I sort of think of it as carding wool. After I do a bit of brushing, I use the tips of the comb to help get hairs apart as well. The comb helps me find the matts that the brush has missed and then I can also work on those.
Is it very sharp? Could it cut the pup’s skin? I was told by 2 different groomers today that the only way to get rid off the matted hair is to shave him everywhere (to avoid bald spots).
The ends of the comb are rounded. The comb is more likely to pull the hair a bit and hurt the pup than cut them. It's all about how matted the coat is and how much time you can spend just fixing the matting. If a groomer would need to spend a load of time fixing matted hair, they wouldn't make any money on the haircut. So for them, it's easier to just shave the dog. But we can just do little bits each day to remove the matting.

@@CatS2288 You have the advantage of time. Just small amounts once in a while with treat rewards. Without treats it will be harder. If there is a big matted section you can just use scissors to cut vertically with the hair to separate it into smaller sections. If it is really thick you can get under the matting and slowly break it down from the base. After a while I might then cut the top of the matted area off, at least you will be left with some longer hair in that section than if you just shaved straight away.

I am always worried that I will brush my shih tzu bald with this type of tool. :(
