When you hit that Db major7, I felt like I went to heaven. Substitute chords sound so extra good when unexpected! Thank you for showing us your arrangement!
Ken, thank you for your rendition of The Nearness of You. I’m an ear player - have been since a small child- in spite of years of piano lessons. I have become a jazz lover and find some chords and voicings difficult to find by ear. Sight reading is difficult for me, and understanding music theory even more so. But hearing you play in conjunction with the transcription makes my mastering of this piece so much easier. Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful pieces with the rest of us.
Dear Kent, I am watching your videos over and over and am so greatly thankful for your efforts to explain and upload your tutorials that honestly mean the world to me. Your playing is beautiful and heart touching and having someone like you to even trying to explain what you are doing ist just fantastic. Thank you so much Best regard from a true fan from Germany Max
I note that the last comment on this video was made four years ago, so pehaps it's something of a hidden gem. I've just watched it for the first time and can' wait to practice the arrangement so that I can abosrb some of he techniques into my repertoire. Kent's arrangements are that rare thing -- challenging but playable with application.
Thanks, Bill, it's a pleasure to teach, what I know.... on RUclips, because it reaches out to folks in remote places in the world... where there are no teachers, ....and I'm grateful to hear from you. Best wishes, KH
That is absolutely beautiful. You lead me to research these songs because so many I have never heard. This 1, I chose to listen to Jimmy Smith and Joe Pesci. Joe is crying as they are recording Jimmy Smith singing this song. Thank you for taking me on a new musical journey as a growing pianist while adding to my vocal repertoire. You, You, You! Are Amazing! That's all I can say.
D'bra, ...thanks so much for telling me. It makes me happy and grateful that I can inspire you in your musical journey. I love hearing from you... and yes, all our influecnes come together in creating our musical personality.
I have a soft spot for this song, since I partially attribute my successful wooing of my wife to my rendition of singing this. Good to get some tips on the accompaniment as well. Love the videos.
Such a great video. I really liked Norah Jones' version of it but as a pianist, your arrangement is the prettiest I've heard. It sounds very much like Barry Harris but with your handwriting and style to boot. I am really starting to understand the drop 2 thing ^^. Also: Love the watch! Very cool! Rene
+RRTheN00bPwner Thanks, Rene, Great to hear from you! Thanks so much for the compliment on the arrangement...it's really one of my favorites, as far as ones I've done...such a great Hoagy Carmichael tune with lots of possibilities for interpretation. How are YOU doing?
+Kent Hewitt oh it's a lovely tune! And I love your piano! Have you ever played on a digital one? I own a Yamaha Clavinova and I really like it for I can plug in headphones and it's always in tune. But at some point I'd like to get a nice grand. Maybe an old one if I ever come across one that does not take too much work to get it into a good condition. Anyways, I'm well! Thanks for asking! Hope all is good at the Jazz Ranch? ;)
I love your arrangements so much, Kent. thanks for sharing this one! It's a bit of a non-conventional standard, but I wanted to ask you if you could play through and discuss "Tell Me a Bedtime Story". That tune's harmony is infectious, and deceptively mature.
Another great lesson Kent, beautifully played. My classical training helps me with the technique you displayed. Now all I have to do is make it sound as good as you ! 🤣
+Art by Atlas Thanks! That's one of Hoagy Carmichael's biggest hits. I like that Tadd Dameron tune too..so I'll give that some thought. Do you play that song?
Razzie B Long enough to learn all this stuff, and realize how much more there is to learn. But don't let that stop you; if you practice and study hard I'm sure you can acquire these skills a lot faster than I did! And it's rewarding to pass on the knowledge.
Thank you, I had learned a few techniques from you but haven't quit been proficient at it. One last question, What is the most efficient way practice jazz? I have been practicing 2-5-1's but I think i've been progressing slow or is it just on me?
+Razzie B A lot of it depends on your aptitude and desire, also how much time you can put into practicing. There are so many different things you can do, it's a long list. Some important things are improving your ear by listening to a lot of pianists you like and try to imitate what they are playing. So listening to recordings or live performances are good. Also get ahold of some good transcription books and theory books and study them. Practicing technical things like scales , arpeggios, ii-V-1s, are also good ideas. It takes a while, but if you keep working at it you will see improvements, which is gratifying.
I've been taking lesson for about 6 months and my teacher assigned me this song and now I'm starting to work on improvisation. I didn't want to copy your arrangement cause that would be cheating but you had some really cool drop 2 passages and voicings that I could incorporate to keep the song from sounding the same each time I play it. Thanks
I just cut and pasted the link and it goes right to my score The Nearness of You ….You can read The Nearness of You in the printing of the link. Go to my email and I'll send it to your email.
Great stuff, Kent. Above and beyond the call of duty. Thank you, sir!
Glad you enjoyed it!@
When you hit that Db major7, I felt like I went to heaven. Substitute chords sound so extra good when unexpected! Thank you for showing us your arrangement!
I'm glad I could make you feel that way, and special thanks for telling me.
Wow this might be one of your best videos that I've seen. So much meat to chew on in this one; some really lovely substitutions. I love it!
Thanks so much!

By seeing the drop 2 voicings a few times on your videos, I'm starting to pick up this w/out effort. Thanks to you Kent.
