- This is a video on how to repair the recoil starter on Chrysler and Sea King outboard motors. This video covers 4.4hp 5hp 6hp 6.6hp 7hp 7.5hp 8hp 9.6hp 9.9 10hp 12hp 12.9hp 15hp Chrysler and Sea King motors 1968 thru 1984....Tet me know if this video work's for you.I did make 2 videos of this job.But the other one is unlisted. If you would like to see it let me know.
Thanks to your video I was able to tackle this project semi confidently...putting a tack weld on the spring is an awesome quick fix and its free rather than replacing parts! Thanks a ton for posting useful videos and sharing your knowledge, it's much appreciated dude
Thank you for the video. This is the first video in a lot of searching that actually shows how to disassemble, repair, and reassemble the recoil. The video made it a lot easier to understand how it works.
Your video saved me big time. I had a fuel line leak under the recoil assembly so I had to remove it to repair the hose. Once that was done I spent hours trying to figure out a way to re-tension that spring. I never would have figured it out. Many thanks and keep up the great videos.
I just bought one of those 15 hp for $250 (120psi on both with clean oil and a newish impeller) the recoil starter wasn't working. I've been rope starting it for the last couple of weeks which doesn't bother me too much. I really like the motor its only 55 pounds and goes like the wind on my light 12 footer. The previous owner didn't want to mess with it anymore so I was happy to get it. I'm so glad that you made this video I'll get it fixed and increase its value to an even $300 lol.
Hi I just bought a 1981 sea king 15hp and I just want to know if you can show me how to pull down the lower unit to replace the impeller on the water pump thanks
Thank you so much for this video. I have an unknown year Sears 15 hp. After skowering the internet looking for a repair manual, I came across this video. It was exactly what I needed to put my starter back together. he recoil was exactly the same. instead of welding I bent over the spring tip and put it back together following these instructions. Just saved me a ton.
You are welcome..
I don't suppose you know where to find parts for these things anymore? I'm looking for a carb kit...
You can get part's at your Mercury outboard dealer. Or try hear www.marineengine.com/
You weren’t at all worried that the spring tip would crack from vending it? Isn’t spring steel pretty hard/brittle?
@@seantilldawn steel will bend not crack. can always bend it back
Thank you for the video I used it to help with my 1957 West Bend Barracuda 12HP. I took the recoil off a year ago when I first got the motor I could not figure it out until I watched your video. Thanks Again
Thanks. Great video. My winter project. My 82 15hp broke the top spool in half on a non rewind. Trying to sell this thing. Ordering new spool and spring. Grease
Where did you get the new spool and spring??
Thanks for posting this clear no nonsense video ! Isn't you tube great for this stuff. I've been a licenced mechanic for over 30 years. Now anytime I'm going to tackle something I either haven;t done before or might have cursed trying to do in the past I check you tube first. Well done !
Thanks again for sharing, 0:54 shows the booger weld, I did this weld, not as pretty as yours, but appears to be working great, I watched your video another 4 or 5 times, then installed it. Works perfect! Your video saved me $80, the cost of replacing that spring with a new one. :). Thank you very much.
+Natalia Johnson Thank you for the kind comment.
One more;I did not weld screwdriver, I just use small vise-grip.Working perfectly. Thanks again.
Thank you. Very helpful video. I'm currently working on a 70 sea king 9.6 and a 71 chrysler 9.9 that have been sitting since the early 90s. I'm really enjoying your videos.
Thank you I was having lots of trouble until I sat down and watched this video now it works like new 👍👍
I just followed your instructions on a 79 - 9.9. It went very well, Thanks for the video.
I know. It's really nice having a full set of identical parts. I grew up with these motors fishing with my dad so there is a little sentiment that comes with them. I have them both running great, just need to finish up a few details here and there.
Subscribed and liked. Just getting a 1978 15 hp running and rebuilding anything that can fail. Should rocket my old 12ft. 1971 Grumman B-bow to my fishing spots. If only it charged my battery for my fish finder! Thank you.
Hi Ben,
Your awesome, i checked and cleaned points. Spark on both cylinders now
Rob Rivait Good!
Ok so I had to replace the "spandex?" Replaced good to go... Then go to recoil it and get it where it needs, then go to put the pin in and it goes all the way till it's supposed to come out the other side and can't get it to go any more... It's a 15hp same is in the video, if anyone lives in Colorado Springs co, and knows how to complete my job it would be greatly appreciated if we got in contact lol or at least some tips, thanks a lot!! Great video, I've watched it about 15 times now...
Hello Ben,
Love your videos! And I have a question. I have a Chrysler 15hp Sea King, and was wondering if you are for hire to fix it up. It runs, but not well. It takes several pulls to get it started and I can't really get it to idle very evenly. I'm ok with working on cars, but outboards are tough. I've replace the points, and several other parts. I think my next thing will be to rebuild the carburetor with new gaskets, diaphragm, and reeds. If that doesn't help. I would like to send it to you to take a look at. Is that possible. Here are the details of the motor: 1982 Chrysler Sea King 15HP, Model# VWB 52119C, Serial# 18X 24386. I bought it used about 10 years ago, and it has never run well, and has been sitting in my garage mostly. It is a very clean motor, I do not believe it has too many hours on it from the looks of it. But I'm in my 60s now and pulling that thing over and over is not as fun as it used to be. I am ready for something that starts easily, or has an electric start.
Did you make any progress??
Awsome man this was so much help. its hard for me to find parts for these things and mine looks like i just bought its clean.
Also is there anywhere i can by parts for these motors mine is a 1978 sea king 15 hp my sping keeps popping off an my color is plastic not brass
Thanks for the video. This has really helped me understand how to put my bendix and recoil back together. In your video, you had a metal piece on the end of the recoil spring. Mine is plastic, not metal, so I can't put the "booger" weld. How else can I keep the spring attached to the plastic without it unwinding. I love your screwdriver invention.
Im trying to locate that whole entire part that you took out the spring with everything else where can I find that
Hi , thanks for your interesting video it works perfect , my Chrysler is 5 hp job is done perfectly. Now I have to replace the 2 gas line inside to carburetor any idea how will be appreciated. Thanks in advance🙏👍
Thanks a lot for this video.Help me a lot and save money too. Thanks again.
The gas oil mix is 50:1 but i like to run my motors at 32:1 witch is 4oz of TCW-3 oil per gallon of gas.
Not sure what the heck I'm doing wrong but twice now I followed your procedure where I tightened up the top screw. Put my tool in to hold it while I turned it counterclockwise 8 or 9 times. Then while holding the spring tight I was able to get the pin back in after loosening the screw. As soon as I got the pin through and let go of everything, the spring unwound itself and unwound the rope off of the pulley instead of pulling the rope tight. Can you fix my stupidity here? Not sure why it's doing that as I was following the step-by-step instructions and watched the video a dozen times probably now. My next attempt will be my third attempt as the first two did the exact same thing. It's like the spring is wound the wrong way once I let go of it but yet I am winding it counterclockwise. Thanks for the video
Loved the video! Was given almost this exact 10 hp model. Do you have a resource for buying a new spring? New spool? Mine has a crack in it and went through the process of reloading the spring and it recoil once and on second pull went back to no recoil. The spot where you said often fails and needs a booger weld doesn't seem to be the issue. Would love to see the other videos related to the 10 hp if you are willing to share. Thanks again.
Got my 1974 6hp unseized, now working on fixing the recoil. Next will be seeing if it even has enough compression. What should the two cylinders on a 1974 chrysler 6 hp be at?
I have a 1984 chrysler 15hp. I read the service manual and watch your video. I'm not sure how the recoil rope attaches to the recoil poly on mine there is two holes in the pully. The manual mentions a bolt.
Thanks for video! would you happen to know where to find parts for a 1985 15 hp sea king ? needed some parts like carb kit, and recoil ?
first question i want to ask is how come theres sunshine in the back ground.hahaha
I actully found my two chrysler OB rewind tools the other day while looking for some else..glade to see you back working on engines again..Am doing a overhaul on a 125 force myself..
this is ancient i know but just did a 1974 20hp one, and didnt take out the pin after installing a new spring. just screwed the top screw in tight, and wound it counter clockwise 8 turns. i could almost do it by hand. why do you need to take the pin out? maybe i did something wrong but it pulls perfect. Took the plugs out so the bendix wouldnt be hard to turn against flywheel. thanks!
video is perfect followed it to a tee went great thanks very helpful
Thanks alot for this video. I have been trying for a long time now but the spring keeps unwinding maybe its damaged... Sometimes i get it alittle but it doesnt work.. so mad at it atm.. Got a chrystler 5hp from 197-something :/
Gustav Ranstrand Yea sounds like you need a new spring.
I would really like to see what the magneto looks like? and adding a rectifer regulator to charge a battery add a trolling motor and a depth finder for this motor?
Could you do a tune-up video on the 9.9. I am very interested in how to maintain mine properly. And how to check and change the water pump.
I've tried installing after taking it out I rewind counter clockwise and installed the pin yet it won't return back on the spool does the neutral safety have to be back on it
Hi again,
Thanks for the quick response. I have managed to find a 15 HP engine block with all it's internal components but the crankshaft is short, made for a CD ignition. In addition I found a 12.9 HP autolectric crankshaft which is identical to my current one but is constructed for a 12.9hp, not a 15hp block. I recently found the service manual which states the bore and stroke for the 9.9-15 are all different. Could the two crankshafts be swapped and still work despite the difference?
Thanks.
How were you able to screw the bolt counter clockwise without is un screwing?
You tighten the center screw
Well thank you for the comment, and you are welcome.
You will find that the 1970 9.6 and the 1971 9.9 are mechanically identical.
Nice 2 see someone that likes the old chryslers. I have a 4.4 from the seventies, but the recoilspring is broken. Here in the netherlands Where i live there aren't many chryslers around, so if anybody knows Where i van get the spring? Greets Robert Paul
Boy i really don't know sorry. Maybe look on ebay.
I suppose it has broken at the bottom end where it turns and goes thru the keeper. I would try to 'expand' the lower coil/s , remove any of it that is not 'straight' with a grinder or dremmel tool. Then spread coil enough to get a single coil hot enough to bend the 90 degree turn in it with pliers to go in keepers hole. A plumbers torch may be hot enough but if not use an oxy acetylene torch.
How long and what kind of recoil rope do you use? Where is the best place to get replacement decals?
I ordered some parts and got the recoil fixed thanks for this video it helped! now it just needs to be tuned I found your video for that. One question is there any way to tell what year the motor is? it was a guess on ordering parts
You got it.. 4.4-15hp use the same recoil 1968-1985 low profile motor's. But it has to be the low profile motor.
I have video's on all 3 type's of recoil's Chrysler used.
hi man your vids have been a lot of help ,i got a 15hp viking late 60s with no spark , i got it running now i just have to adjust points and rebuild a one of the points (plastic part) broke , i just woder where can i get points for this model i been looking everywhere , i am in Ontario Canada ,ope you could help thanks man for your vids
Hi,
I have a Chrysler 12.9 HP outboard from 1971 and I have heard that the engine block on the 9.9 through 15 is the same and the only difference is the carburetor. Is this true? I am in need of a new engine block and crankshaft due to pitting on the cylinder sleeves and needle bearings.
Thanks,
Ben R.
@chrysleroutboarddude I have a question about reassembling the float that is inside the carburetor. It's a 1987 Sears Gamefisher 9.9.
Ben, Great videos! Can you please tell me where I should find the serial number on this engine?
By the Transom mounting hardware/pivot. Trev NZ
My coil spring doesn't stop when I put it back into the assembly. Am I missing a step or a part of that fell or broke off?
Is there anyway i can get you to make another video on how to uninstall an reinstall the pull cord mechanism
Hey Ben, would a recoil from a Sea King 6 HP (60s -70s) fit on a Sea King 9.6 1970? The spring from my recoil is broken and i'm looking for one...
Thanks for post your videos! you're the man!
I have a 6 hp no bolt in top only way I could figure to rewind it was screwdriver. Piece that has cotter pin running thru it is broke on one side where the pin goes. when you get the pin in it it sounds like the spring is slipping from below. can you help
Hi,I'm actually Carol's husband Billy.Your video was great,a lot of help. I bought a 1981 15hp Chrysler that the recoil was messed up on. Made repair like your video, worked great for about 6-8 pulls and it locks down. I have to put my fingers on both sides of the spool that the rope winds up around and free it up.Took it apart 3 times.Does the same thing every time.Any idea why,or what I'm doing wrong?
Carol Stevens There is a spring around the starter gear that might be too tight. Or you might have the recoil spring to tight.
yesss it worked!!! thank you for the video
Do you know if they make metal props for those outboards I can only find the plastic ones
Hello Ben, I have a question. What's the diameter and length of the pull rope you're using? Thank you.
Please don't. Do not let the trolls get to you. They just want attention
remember, do not feed the trolls.
Really like watching your videos. I just recently bought a 1973 Chrysler 12.9 hp (model 122HD) that runs great but the recoil is non functional. The recoil doesn’t look like any others you have done videos on. Do you have any tips or ideas of what could be the problem?
How long is the pull string supposed to be in length
I have 2 sea kings and Both have broken props do you have any old ones I could buy or know where I could buy some from ?
hi . i have a 1985 us marine sea king 15 hp. it is missing the recoil starter assembly. do you have any parts for sale or advise on where to find them its even missing the upper shaft bracket. would really love to make it hole again. its in real good shape . thanks for any help you could give.
If you could please help me with reinstalling the recoil rope. The rope's knot came undone and the rope came out. How do I reinstall? Do I need to remove flywheel and spring assembly to repair? Thank you for any assistance.
Thanks for the great videos.
I need to replace only the pinion on my 1976 8 hp. What steps should I take to disassemble the starter to replace the pinion?
Thanks again.
Ervin McKinney Well if you follow this video all you have to do is just pull it off.
Ervin McKinney BBC ca y ,c 8@
Have you ever had a flywheel key break? I'm getting my 79 Chrysler 20 hp electric start running and he key snapped in half, little shocked.
I got it running but forgot the gas line, just revved er up and the key, little piece of metal, was snapped in half.
Anything that could cause that? Any help appreciated
Hi Ben, do you happen to have a hood to fit a 1980 Chrysler 9.9? Its a model 92HOG. I bought the motor for 50, cleaned the points as you suggested. It fired up on 2nd pull after sitting in the guys garage I bought it from. The hood was damaged pretty much beyond repair. Seems to run good in the barrel. Pumps water great.
Rob Rivait Rob i am sorry but i don't sell parts.
Is the process similar for the 20hp sea king?
I have a 1986 15 HP. And it needs the whole recoil assembly. are the parts the same, and do you know where I might get them?
Can you tell me how to identify the model and year of a Chrysler Seaking 9.9hp that is missing the tag from the mount?
where do you find replacement parts
Are you still working on 15hp sea king Chrysler motors? Do you happen to have a service manual for one? I just picked one up and it is missing the recoil spring, and there is linkage unhooked I’m not sure what or where they hook up.
Hey I haven't gotten the time to post but the day after you fixed the recoiler for me I took it out and after about 5-8 pulls the recoiler got stuck and I opened the outboard to see what was wrong and the recoiler just became undone. But I was wondering if you are selling any 25-30 hp outboard I can trade/buy from you. Thanks
Thank you, But i have had some bad comment's and i am thinking about removing this video.
And may refrain from making any more how to video's in the future.
Where can I get a spring?
I have a question about the telltale on this same motor model. I am
Spraying water at idle but when I get up to speed I look back and nothing is coming out what could this be?
I didnt see any screw in my recoil didnt work when I got it so dont know if it had on 6 hp. and are all the inner rods threaded
Bought a 9.6 sea king with no starter assembly at all. Any idea where I could get the whole assembly
Bob
+Robert Dudley That might be a little hard! You can keep a look on ebay for one or try hear

Hey I have a late 80s 15hp chrysler looks just like the one in this video. Thanks a lot for putting up this vidoe its a great help! I can do everything you mention in here except for when it comes to tightening the spring. It seems to drop through the bottom and spin freely. It looks as though there should be some way to keep the bottom of the spring assembly from falling thru the circular mounting bracket. Any ideas? Am I missing a part? Thanks!!
Bushdoctorslab Update: I found the part ( a small pin that attaches to the bottom mounting bracket had fallen off and thats what locks the bottom of the spring to allow you to wind it up. The spot where the pin connects to bottom bracket is cracked however so im going to order one to replace asap. Thanks again!
hey man where can i find the pull rope. i really appreciate your videos and they have helped me a lot. i need a pull rope for my 7.5 so bad send link pleaseeee
Would this be the same for a 1969 Chrysler 9.9 model 907. I'm having the same problem tried winding it up counter clockwise but it just loosens the top screw. I can turn it clock wise that is all. Your help would be more then appreciated. Thanks.
Yes it is! I do explain that in the video.
And don't stop making any videos, ever.
Hey nice video cam you tell me where can I buy the shift lever? Thanks.
Nice video man, i have a couple questions for you, I do have a 9.5 Chrysler,I think is a 79, acording to the information on it. I am puting back the recoil, but if i need to replace the rope, is the rope has to have an specific length?
second question...Is my outboard a 2 cylinder or 4 cylinder?
and last but no least...about the mix on the gas...what is the ratio.../
thanks in advance, and hoping to hear from you.
Nick
I need a part for this motor...an upper starter bracket. Any chance?
i have the same motor. i was running it in the water all of a sudden it turned off and the flywheel wont turn. do you know what it could be?
Hi, I just got one of these, and I have a few questions, Its missing the cowling, is it mandatory to have one? Or do you recommend finding a new one, or building one, and its missing the fuel tank and the fuel line. Does any gas tank work?
Thanks.
Where do you get the female adapter for the gas nipple? My local shops dont have it. I've ordered one online and it fits on the nipple but doesn't lock on.
www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=MER++++F197787T3
Do you know where to get the shift lever for a 80 9.9?
Thanks for the great video
Wow man, amazing!!! Thanks for posting that video for all to see. Today I bought a 6hp and the recoil assembly is exactly the same as this unit. So this is very helpful...
Question though, the guy I bought it from didn't know the fuel mixture? Would it probably be 50:1 mix also?
Well if it has this recoil it is a 50/1 motor, but i like to use more oil and mix my motors at 32/1. You can check out my other vid's and find your motor.
That will work. Thanks for the tip.
Hi Ben, great videos. I bought a
1979 9.9 Chrysler. I have spark on one cylinder but not on other. Both coils are really clean but im guessing one is bad or could it be a condensor possible? I appreciate any information and keep up the great videos
Rob Rivait It could be a condenser! but make sure the points are clean clean.
Bad coils are very rare.
Hey man do you have a good source for parts? My recoil spring has been broken and rewelded so many times its just not happening any more. $70 on ebay... I'm really not looking to pay that kind of money. Thanks
Got a 9.6 SeaKing trying to rebuild the carb do you by any chance know of a kit that would work for a Tillotson RK-821 MD-144A Chrysler. I am coming up empty handed in my searches. I run this motor on 13ft Gheenoe ran strong here in Florida.
I am unaware of any carburetor kits that are available.
As long as it is the low profile it will work.
Hi Chrysleroutboarddude!
I have a 1987 Chrysler 10hp and I started it up and then put in in Forward and as soon as I did that it started to die so I pulled it again while it was in gear... not the best thing to do to the motor. So anyway I am guessing that I need to do what you did in this video? Can I buy that little brass piece for the spring? Or should I just make that little booger weld? I am just a little worried about doing this because I do not want to screw anything up. Thank you for reading this.
+Matthew Rozumialski Well I just do the weld but you can get the brass at a hardware store.
If you do the weld be careful with the heat! What I do is hold the spring just above water so i can cool it fast.
I have a 65 west bend 9hp that is blowing alot of smoke out of the exhaust any ideas what to do
+Justin Smithson Well it is a two stroke engine, so exhaust smoke is normal.
What kind of oil are you using?
Thank you for this outstanding video. Can you please recommend a website I can buy parts for a sea King 15 hp. Impeller, etc. thanks. The sharing of knowledge is much appreciated.
+Natalia Johnson Hear you go. www.marineengine.com/
I have that same motor and am having the same problem. But the plastic piece that goes on both sides of the bar at the bottom is broke, any idea as to where I would find that piece or the whole assembly? I’ve been looking for weeks.
Unfortunately it only comes with the new spring.
@@chrysleroutboarddudeso where can I get a new spring?
Hi Ben, unfortunately I don't have anyone near me that works on Chryslers, my 9.9 is running perfect no problem at all. I picked up a little 6 horse Chrysler for very cheap. I'm only getting about 60 pounds on each cylinder. seems a little low to me any idea what compression should be? Thanks. I've got fuel spark, but can't get started. could 60 pounds just be too low? I'm getting a lot of fuel in the cylinders, buddy carb was rebuilt and is very clean
Rob Rivait What year is the 6hp? The ones from the 60s only have about 75psi but the ones from the 70 should be around 100psi, and the loopers from the late 70s and 80s will have 125+
Is it the same for a 20hp?
Great videos. Where do you get parts for these motors?
